Italian press suggest that Prandelli will play 352 and introduce Montolivo, Osvaldo and Balotelli who all missed Italy's rather lucky and poor 1-0 home win over spirited Bulgarian team. But playing with just the one striker- the ancient (goalscorer)

The probable line up will have Osvaldo and Balotelli up front supported by five midfielders: Giaccherini, Montolivio Pirlo Thiago Motta and De Rossi. Buffon gets his zillionth cap Maggio Bonucci and Chiellini are the defenders. If it works well then its a useful pointer for how Saints could use Osvaldo best. Id imagine they already know Osvaldo better than we do and will play to his strengths...so it could be very revealing how Prandelli uses him tomorrow. No real flying wingers there incidentally- like Saints.

I will particularly be watching Osvaldo and Balotelli movement in that 3-5-2 formation and how the others interact with them... though im going to watch Rickie v Ukraine first and record the Italy match if i can.....

i suggested a not dissimilar formation (3-4-1-2) in the west ham build up thread and got stick for it! i agree, we should use the talent available in the best possible way, and if that means only three at the back then why not?

Maybe its how I am reading it but that looks like 3-6-2 which no doubt could be quite effective but may not get past the referee's scrutiny!

I think MP knows him better than Prandelli from his Epaneol days and will surely have bought him with a formation in mind using the current Saints squad! So not really a lot to learn from the Italy line up!

We've signed Osvaldo precisely because he fits our system and the manager knows his strengths already.

I'd started by thinking that we'd be inclined to think the "why not" would be that we'd be even more susceptible to long diagonal balls, but when our practical line up is 2-4-3-1 anyway with the full backs level with the defensive midfielders overall, it's actually a more defensive line up than we've currently got and would also give us more ability to close down the wide long balls without being exposed along the rest of the back line.
