Shows that we don have one advantage in the new forest at least - quiet.

I have always thought that it should work in our favour... for a lot of people, they work in London so they can retire to nice areas - if you can afford it you may as well live somewhere nice in the first place!

I think his reference to "quiet" was more a matter of joining an unfashionable club in a division where the focus would be on other teams and players, plus moving away from the capital city of the country he represents in a nation with very invasive fans and an ultra culture, rather than having the New Forest on the doorstep.

We knew the rest of it in the thread on whether we would sign him already, he was having loads of problems with fans disrespecting him, not entirely surprising given his tendency to punch the odd teammate. :D

I agree - I don't think he meant quiet in any form other than "this is someplace new that is not the media center of the country" and "this is not one of the biggest covered teams in the league."

And while I would like SFC to become more covered, sometimes you need to roll with the attributes that you have, and in this case it worked for Osvaldo.

The9, if you want to play for a PL club, and have a good standard of life in a nice area that is within easy reach of London but not too close, what are the choices? There are a few, but then bring in a decent wage and a manager you have worked for before and it isn't too hard, especially as the big clubs aren't coming knocking. The New Forest is a very nice place to live and one which we take too much for granted. You may remember that he asked to move to Juve from Roma, because he wanted to escape the temptations of the big city, although Turin has nearly 1m people. One thing he won't suffer with us are Ultras threatening him at home.

Every City in this Country has somewhere beautiful on their doorstep, Southampton is not a big draw in the scheme of things of places to live, for young people its absolute **** too be honest, everytime I am back there and go out in town it reminds me of why I left, the outlying areas are nice but not any nicer than anywhere else around the Country too be fair.

You seem to be devoid of imagination old chum, we have the best sailing in the world bar none at Cowes and and the finest wilderness space in Europe in the New Forest that draws visitors from all over Europe just to enjoy the space, hiking, camping, fishing, riding, cycling.... and parking is free.

If your existence and imagination are shaped solely by being entertained by others then I pity you but Liverpool over Southampton as a place to live?

Not any nicer than anywhere else around the country? What are you on about? Have you been on the M3 going North from 5pm on a Sunday (guess you will be this weekend at least), competing with the thousands who come down for the weekend? Or the holidaymakers? Or the second home owners? Are they all wrong?

Nope, not in the same league. Some of them are even full of Welsh, Scots or even worse, northeners

(Isles of Scilly please, the locals are very touchy and can get quite hostile :))

Brecon Beacons, Most of mid wales, Antrim coast, Perthshire, Cairngorms, Cotswolds, Yorkshire Dales and the list goes on.

New Forest is very overated IMO.

Oh jeez. No one, me included, is trying to argue that the area is the best in the UK, bar none. Just responding to the "not any nicer than anywhere else" nonsense

Sorry Barry, from someone who is young went to uni in soton and who has lived all around the south coast i would have to disagree with you. I have many friends who have settled in the area because of the forest and proximity to the coast whilst still being easy to get into London from. When I was working in Southampton, every single person loved the area and those that were there all said how lovely it was and would never move back (biased possibly)... But since then I have had to move away to Bristol and I have been back in the forest several weekends this year whilst every person I speak to who knows the area says how lovely it is and how lucky I am to get back there or to have lived there. And that isn't just in Bristol, that is from all over the country.

You may slam it, but the new forest and surrounding areas are bloody stunning and I for one will be getting back there when the opportunity presents itself. For now, Bristol is a great place, more festivals (it is twice the size) but the scenery is nowhere near as nice. The only benifit of being this far west is that you can still get to London in 2 hours, but you can also get to North West Devon in 2 hours aswell, and Wales mixed blessing!

How on earth you can slam the south coast, forest and surrounding areas is beyond me.

And also, the comment you were responding to was about the forest and area, not Southampton as a city, which in truth does need a tad more culture. However argue point for point and explain why the new forest is nothing special. As for being bad for young people... Its frigging rural area not a town center... name me a hustle and bustle part of the countryside.. FFS.

City to city Liverpool is a far better place to live than Southampton, outside of it? Thats up to the individual, the New Forest is not the finest wilderness in England nevermind the UK and Europe but again my opinion, I suggest getting out more and not living in a bubble, I love the areas around Southampton but know there are better places.

I lived in Liverpool for five years (did my degree and masters there) and have to say it beats Southampton hands down.

Shopping, restaurants, music, tourist attractions, culture, pubs/bars, sporting heritage, general aesthetics of city, all far superior. Always a lot of snobbery directed at Liverpool by people who haven't shelved a perception of the city that is rooted in the 1980's, but with the money pumped into it from the European Capital of Culture in 2008, it really is a transformed place.

Surrounding area's aren't fantastic (with notable exceptions of Crosby beach and Port Sunlight) and it can't compete with many of the Hampshire villages as a pastoral idyll, but it's a great place to live.

Thank you Toon, I live in a lovely area, we are looking to move next year after the baby is sorted to a bigger place possibly in Cheshire or the West Lancs, I love it up here but I do miss the Countryside, City to City Liverpool is one if the best to live in the Country, people are so close minded and stuck in a timewarp of 30 years ago. They all think its slums and slag heaps, an example of a nice house by me

I'm not saying for one minute I will be buying that mind, it simply to show there are lovely places here not far from the City centre, every City has its ****holes.

This has all turned into a willy waiving competition about who lives in a nicer area. The one thing that Osvaldo has said is that he knows all too well the temptations of the big smoke, hence why he wanted a move to Turin from Rome.

Looking at his options.....

I suspect that we were the biggest club to come in for him (or rather one that met his wage demands) as no CL team seemed prepared to come and get him, he knew the manager, the area is largely devoid of temptation but still close enough to London if he feels the need to blow a bit of steam off. A man in his position is more than able to afford to pay for a driver to take him up and down to town while he slumbers in the back, so that really isn't an issue.

I am older than him, and lived away from the area, mainly in London and abroad for the best of 25 years, but wouldn't want to move away from here again. Me, I'd far rather live in the most desolate area of the country than in a City. That's my personal preference. Other people look for other things. I know that I am a little biased, as a lot of people are about their home area, but maybe Osvaldo isn't looking for nightclubs, shopping, restaurants, etc etc. No doubt one day he will be interviewed about the pros and cons of living here.

The New Forest is a nice area. There are nicer areas (being subjective), but there's not much point living at Cape Wrath if you want to play EPL.

Roma's sporting director Walter Sabatini spoke about Osvaldo today and had this to say:

Was Osvaldo a problem?

Osvaldo is a player with extraodinary qualities, but he never found harmony within the environment. It was difficult to handle him. I am sorry things degenerated as they did, as in my opinion there was possibility for a good feeling between him & the fans. He never did too serious things, but the things he did were repetitive and too much, he was in a tunnel with no way back. He is a good guy, very smart and a very important player. He scored 28 goals in 56 games, and I hope he'll do the same at Southampton because we have bonuses to cash in on.
