Nick Harris the writer of this article was on talk sport this afternoon and he mentioned he had interviewed Rio Ferdinand (linked below) for his column in the Daily Mail. He said Rio was talking very highly of our academy and strategy. Nick Harris also mentioned that Rio had said to him that we were the best at producing young English players at the moment.

Ferdinand was chatting last week to team-mate Javier Hernandez, who asked him which clubs were the best producers of talent. ‘I told Chicharito that 15-20 years ago it was West Ham. Obviously, for a long time, it’s been United … and still is.

‘It’s in the DNA of United, from the top. Sir Alex Ferguson kept Matt Busby’s tradition going. When you walk into the training ground, it’s about history and fabric, it’s not just about medals but is also about young players you’ve produced being in the first-team squad.

‘Now you have Southampton, too, as serious producers, with Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, and they’ve a crop of kids coming up … Luke Shaw for me is going to be a top left-back, they’ve James Ward-Prowse and others.'

That's pretty cool.

But it's not like we've just started producing top-quality talent now is it?

Why?

IMO arrogant, over-hyped, believes his own hype, thinks he's some sort of "cool gangsta", thinks he is better than he actually is, ignorant, can't speak coherently and "finks" the world revolves around him. Plus he looks like a bloody duck.

So many players are like that, Merson, Rooney, Defoe etc (not the duck similarity) just my opinion and probably not shared by many. Shame my least post of the day is about this arsehole.

Totally agree with you on this one. Never met the guy personally so could be seen as a bit harsh but comes across as a ****.!

Ok, so I indulged in a bit of hyperbole (call the police)

But yeah, insinuates it due to us having not bought any British this summer. No mention of all the players we have bought through in recent years.

Whilst I appreciate the majority see Rio Ferdinand as a complete tool (and I would also go along with that) I do appreciate this kind of media coverage as like it or not parents and kids alike will listen to stuff like this from a celebrity footballer like Rio. My hope is that we will be seen as the premier youth academy for parents to send their kids too who will then be given a fair chance to play for the first team if\when they are good enough. Whilst some may say we are already that then I see no reason to rest on our laurels and pat ourselves on the back but I'd rather we push on and become recognised worldwide as the best producer of young players in English football. Words like Ferdinand’s help spread that message and I welcome them.
