Still he'll get better.
SaintSparky Posted 5 September, 2013 Share Posted 5 September, 2013 Well done to the team and congratulations to Luke and James - top job by both Attendance was just 5,268 - utterly woeful! (it was £10 for adults).

When the senior team are at home the u21's should play elsewhere. Bristol, Derby, Newcastle, Liverpool. Spread the interest in our national team. S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2013 Share Posted 5 September, 2013 Based on that, Shaw won't be in the U21 squad for long. He'll be in the full team.
mulletsaint Posted 5 September, 2013 Share Posted 5 September, 2013 Not even mentioned by the BBC report #bigsurprisebbcbias TBH the other full back was as good, if not better. Zahar and Redmond did well as did Carroll. Carroll, Redmond and JWP faded somewhat second half.
CityRanger Posted 5 September, 2013 Share Posted 5 September, 2013 Only caught the 2nd half. Thought Shaw looked excellent, JWP a little anonymous, England generally flattered to deceive a bit. JWP was excellent in the first half. England dropped the tempo at the start of the 2nd half and he never got quite as involved after that.

Turkish Posted 6 September, 2013 Share Posted 6 September, 2013 Find someone else to b*tch at, Turkish. Not *****ing, in the real world Baines is ahead of Shaw for England and rightly so. Just because you dont like it it doesnt mean its true. In any case surely youd want to protect him, i mean if he were called up and it went pear shaped wouldn't it remind you of the Italy game and MLT? Surely you wouldn't want this to happen to an 18 year old just starting out in his career.
NickG Posted 6 September, 2013 Share Posted 6 September, 2013 Personally think Shaw is probably up with Baines for ability, but behind on reliability and experience. By summer it maybe hard choice, particularly if Cole remains first choice, who offers alternative or better cover? Would it fit in with current thinking to take the future to a tournament (if we go!) Baines may lose his place, but bet if had gone to Man U he would have been guaranteed.

If he screws up and the opponents score, he will cop the flack he does deserve, hopefully not out of proportion, and he will learn from it. The situation with MLT (and hopefully not Rickie) is different. Several players share the responsibly for not scoring or assisting goals.

lloydie Posted 6 September, 2013 Share Posted 6 September, 2013 Personally thought that Zaha looked irratating and lacked ANY end product. Half the player of Redmond. And apart from his assist I also thought Tom Carroll looked pretty wastefull when he had possession. JWP looked ok, and Shaw look absoloute class, as did the everton full back. BotleySaint Posted 6 September, 2013 Share Posted 6 September, 2013 Personally thought that Zaha looked irratating and lacked ANY end product. Every time I've seen Zaha he's been crap. Dancing about all over the pitch taking one touch too many and trying to beat everyone. Only 20 of course, but extremely frustrating player. Hopefully he'll come good for England's sake. As a team I thought there was spells where England had too many individuals and not working as a team. Players shooting, taking the chances themselves when better options were available. Ward-Prowse was tidy but bypassed a lot by some of the egos unfortunately as he's a team player. Shaw was class enough to shine through of course. Lazlo78 Posted 6 September, 2013 Share Posted 6 September, 2013 The age spread from those 21 players in the squad is 21 (2), 20 (9), 19 (6) and 18 (4). Shaw and WP have done really well to be in that side instead of the U19's! http://www.thefa.com/england/mens-under-21s/Team
Patrick Bateman Posted 6 September, 2013 Share Posted 6 September, 2013 Agree with the analysis on Zaha - he will be a very good player, no question. But on the basis of being able to compare them directly last night, I'd say that Redmond looked the more astute recent purchase of the two. I was also suitably impressed with Berahino!! Shaw was of course, excellent; though not yet ready to replace Cole - Baines is ahead of him in the pecking order, rightly so at the moment based on defensive ability and top flight experience, but it won't be long - he's only 18 for Christ sake!! Lazlo78 Posted 6 September, 2013 Share Posted 6 September, 2013 Callum Chambers scores as England win 6 1 Don't know if this was already mentioned, but apparently the goal was scored by Leo Chambers from West Ham. http://www.thefa.com/england/mens-u19s/News/Match%20Centre/2013/estonia-v-england/050913 But Calum was made captain, I see! Calum scored the first goal. Leo got the 3rd. Edit: hmmm, hang on....just reading another report. Sounds like the FA and Saints Tweets from last night might have mistakenly credited Calum with a goal....? Here's the half time tweet from the FA last night: The FA @FA Half-time in Tallinn and it's Estonia 1-3 #EnglandU19s. The goals came from Calum Chambers (12), Jordon Ibe (30) and Leo Chambers (40). Wonder how many they would have had as StMarys with Luke and JWP in the team? you would think the FA would at least try to consider who is likely to play when choosing locations. Give it to Ron Posted 6 September, 2013 Share Posted 6 September, 2013 Intereseting on Talksport this morning really praising Shaw and saying how Baines is unlucky that Cole keeps him out of the side and Shaw will bypass him and straight in over him.Of course had to get dig in about Man U putting in a bid. SNSUN Posted 6 September, 2013 Share Posted 6 September, 2013 I think Shaw is good enough for the full England team too, but nowhere near Baines and Cole at the moment. Cole though is at the end of his career, and Baines is no spring chicken, so if Shaw continues his progress, that left back spot will be his for years. (Probably fighting it out with Bertrand.) I think the World Cup will come too soon (pending the other two don't get injuries) but after that things will get interesting. As for Bearsyrinho, he's looking like one for the future - and what a week for him!

Luke Shaw is a cracking player, defensively and offensively, but he's only bee a regular for less than a season, and has come up with a few niggling injuries in that time. I'd love to see Shaw in the squad for Brazil, but I think the other two will probably get the nod.

Agreed, though I haven't been able to like the bugger ever since he said the only two players in the world better than him were Ronaldo and Messi so I'm biased.
