Daily Mail accuse Pochettino of lacking confidence in and neglecting British talent

What a load of ******** this is.

It's fair to state that he hasn't signed a British footballer in the summer window, but it's the insinuation that it means we lack confidence in Brits, or our youth that really puzzles me. I mean, of all clubs, Southampton lack confidence in the home-grown talent.

Since the start of pre-season, I make it seventeen British players fielded, nine of which have been with the academy since before the age of fifteen.

These are...

K. Davis, Clyne, Chambers, Stephens, Turnbull, Shaw, Fox, Cork, S. Davis, Reed, Ward-Prowse, Lallana, Isgrove, Rowe, Sinclair, Rodriguez, Lambert.

But yeah, damn that Argentine for buying three foreign internationals with Champions League experience, regardless of the blooding and use of youngsters alongside several other British players.

They also appear confused as to what our crest looks like.

Sounds like a team that plays in red and white stripes so not us!

Looks like the shout of ...."that team in red n White stripes and the spic manager" .... got lost in translation :scared:

I wonder if they actually mean us or Sunderland? Either way they are wrong, as amongst the dozen or so players PDC signed is an English youngster signed from Altrincham, and surely signing up Luke Shaw to a Full Professional Contract counts as a signing?

@JackMcM91: Poor piece of journalism by @AdamCrafton_ Southampton bought 3 foreign players but in first 3 games start with 6 Englishmen and 5 under 25

@AdamCrafton_: @JackMcM91 Saints the example most clubs should follow.

@JackMcM91: @AdamCrafton_ maybe you should highlight this

@AdamCrafton_: @JackMcM91 will be doing in piece v soon

The article refers to us in the table of teams: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2410994/Premier-League-transfers-Nine-clubs-refused-buy-British-summer.html

Anyway, where's CB Fry? Shouldn't he be highlighting that people are slagging off the Daily Mail only because its a negative article? We need reminding...

PersonalLy I thought it was a fantastic article really well written and made some excellent points, all in all excellent journalism.

Seems that due to an unfortunate pasting of an incorrect photo (and unless I read the wrong article) this thread has gained a Daily Mail'esque title.

It would be interesting to see what those without Saints tinted specs would value Shaw, Chambers, and Ward-Prowse at for the purposes of sensibly discussing teams spending on English players in a newspaper article.

I think it's even more news worthy that we have been investing money in The Academy and developing our own home grown players.

As further proof of the article's Anti Saints stance, not only did they place the wrong club crest, but intentionally shows Mauricio in a bad light by displaying him as the only manager not wearing a tie :suspicious:

No, they were actually being kind to him there. Note that all the other managers are wearing ties in their team colours. On the occasions that Pochettino does wear a tie it is always blue. They simply couldn't fins a picture of him wearing a red tie.

I've read the article, they are highlighting us as one of the clubs who hasn't bought British so it's us, however we are one of the few clubs not condemned by name (he mentions Sunderland have bought British but condemns them for it only being one player). My guess is he wants to make a point but realised if he ever tried to attack us for being anti-Brit he wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

The article is very poor, not only for the reasons already stated but clear confusion between English and British players and interests, the article is supposed to be about why the England team is poor, so how buying Welsh, Scottish or Irish players would help is beyond me. On a side note I would love to know why Swansea and Cardiff should have any interest in promoting the England team. One of the problems of allowing foreign teams into England's Premier League. Still they have their own problems, no Welsh players were bought by EPL teams this summer at all (though one was sold)

I blame Trousers, he buys the Mail for some unfathomable reason.

i used to buy the mail at uni because it was of differing opinion to me, and it has the easiest crossword.

journalism on the whole is dead, new mediums and a continuation of interns who can afford the placement rather than deserving/earning the placement have seen to this.
