It is clear Southampton have another gem on their hands. Suddenly they have a Premier League right-back, plucked straight from their own reserves - and have saved themselves millions.

He will no doubt be linked with big-money moves, but there is little doubting his footballing education will continue at Southampton for the next few years.

Potential 20million? I rate Shaw at that upper limit but I honestly don't think anyone has seen enough of Chambers to gauge him at that yet. We also need to make sure the kid stays grounded as we don't want him going the way of Nile Ranger and being led the wrong way by too much exposure too soon.

For an 18 year old to look so assured in the Prem is rare.

Of course Clyne is better now, he is an excellent player and has nearly 200 pro apps to his name compared to Chambers' 3.

In the book 'The Nowhere Men' an Arsenal scout who tracked Shaw from age 14 said Chambers has an equal amount of potential and is extremely highly rated by a number of clubs.

Not bad for a player who has been a RB for just over a year.

In fairness, most of (clearly not all) the kids that come through have a pretty good attitude. Going back quite a way.

Lallana, surman, Walcott, bale, oxo, JWP, Shaw...

The most pleasing thing about the academy is not necessarily the star players like Walcott, bale and oxlade that come out (though that's clearly brilliant) but the amount of players that go on to have careers, suggesting the mentality instilled is spot on. Mills, carnie, bridge, Baird, blackstock, mcgoldrick, best, dyer, Tim sparv, kenwyne, Andrew McNeil, Alan blayney, Oscar gobern, matt Patterson, surman, Lloyd James, Simon Gillett ... The list of people succeeding (to a greater or lesser extent) as professional footballers is extremely impressive. Our current crop look pretty promising too. There's lots of stories about footballers getting too much too young and going off the rails, but our lads seem to come out with their heads screwed on, a real reason to feel proud of our academy.

I reckon Chambers will end up playing further upfield as Bale has done. Shaw is definitely a gritty left back, whereas I believe Chambers has much more potential going forward.
Don't see that at all I'm afraid. Shaw offers loads going forward, Chambers really not so much.

Chambers is another lad who's been connected with the club since he was in junior school...as did Luke Shaw and JWP.

He surely understands the squad system and tactics enough to be satisfied with his current " promotion " to the first team squad.

....even if he goes onto greater glory at some stage in the future, I doubt very much if he would ever consider a move unless Saints were relegated, or were going through a really bad period.

The media prints "disatisfied " stories about any player who doesn't play two games in a row (example : recently about Jack Cork) but scare headlines don't mean anything except a waste of printers ink.

Is the assertion that Chambers is preferred to Clyne correct? My understanding was that Chambers got the opportunity in the first place because Clyne was carrying a knock. It might be that as Chambers has proved to be competent that he is allowed to continue for a game or two beyond Clyne's return to fitness, but I feel that it is stretching things a little to suggest that Chambers is preferred at this early stage of his senior career.

I fear they are over flattering him a bit. Great prospect and has done admirably but doesn't over anywhere near as much a Clyne...... yet.

Agree with this - he has done ok in pre-season and during games at WBA and Sunderland, but was shown up several times by Redmond (as was JWP) last Saturday and the sooner Clyne returns the better.

I'd assume Clyne is still regarded as first choice.

I don't think the article is over-hyping Chambers. He is one of only a handful of players to play premier games at such a young age. If he continues to develop at the rate he has done he will certainly have a very promising future. Hopefully the assured displays he has put in to-date will allow him gain the confidence to press forward and support our attacking play.

Tha article is a crock of **** and was written by someone with a GCSE grasp of english. He uses the word "clearly" three times in the space of two lines, gives him a 50% rating for heading in the top figure and then gives him 8/10 for it at the bottom.

Total dross, can't believe that somthing that bad came out of sky....

But because it is positive about saints, lets just lap it up shall we?

Do we really need someone who knows less than us about chambers telling us how good he is, whilst contradicting himself in the process? Or can we form your own opinion about it? Apparently we have to quote the reporter word for word like parrots :/

In the early days, Shaw didn't get forward very much. But as his confidence grew and he became more established in the team, he has started to offer a lot more going forward. Understandably, Chambers is holding back a bit because he's primarily there to defend and he doesn't want to get caught out, but I reckon we'll see a lot more from him going forward the longer he stays in the team. I actually think his final ball I.e. his crossing is much better than Shaw's. Shaw though does remind me of Bale...he is prepared to run at and take on players.

Chambers, Ward-Prowse, Shaw, plus Harrison Reed and Omar Rowe to come means we have a lot to look forward to over the next few years. May even be worth a cheeky bet on Chambers and Shaw to play full back for England together if any of the bookies would take that bet.

Half-time in Tallinn and it's Estonia 1-3 #EnglandU19s. The goals came from Calum Chambers (12), Jordon Ibe (30) and Leo Chambers (40).

He's got a good goalscoring record for England - that's 3 goals in 11 games for the u19s and he also scored 3 in 6 for the u17s.

Though he hasn't gone forward much in the first team, he only became a RB last season after a few years in midfield (and even played there against Stevenage in the League Cup last season) so at the least he's comfortable playing further forward.
