A serious transfer window review thread...

Unbelievable Jeff

So you think that "owning" a player who could be a major flop (Delgado) or force a move (tevez) or see out his contract and give zero return (countless examples) is always better than having a player on loan?

"Owning" a player can be a financial disaster.

Based on last season of course many west brom fans would rather they owned lukaku, but at least an equal number would have preferred not to have owned odemwingie, for example.

Despite all that, player ownership is still preferable to borrowing a player from another club on a temporary basis. Obviously you can cherry pick examples where this is not the case, but they would be in the minority. If this were not the case, then nobody would own any player - and then there would be nobody to take loans from! A football club that wants to build a team ethos in the long term would not do so with loan players would they? Having your team ripped apart at the end of each season? No thanks. Let me cherry pick for a moment: Would Spurs have been better off taking Bale on loan from Southampton, or by selling him after 6 years for EUR100m? Edited by kpturner

Don't question GS, he is ITK.

If he says it, it is true.

Like the 3 premiership clubs coming in for Billy, and our bid for Remy.

Poster Armitage Shanks posted about the Remy bid - he has a contact that works at st.marys. No reason for him to lie?

& didn’t mopo say during one of his conferences that the club had been naive in some respects? Maybe this got lost in translation?

did 3 prem clubs make a bid for Billy - I was only aware of one? thanks for the extra info

Oh silly me, must have made it up. Could have sworn you said it somewhere.

Oh yeah, right here on this thread.

The football league may well be where he is now heading - not because of his talent or desire, but because SFC made it that way.

3 premiership clubs wanted him, one made a formal bid (our asking price) yet the club said no.

Perhaps Billy has done something to seriously **** of NC and Mopo? Cant think why else you'd treat a player so badly?

I would say that some clubs utilise the loan window successfully while others simply don’t.

We are definitely in the don’t category.

Generally we have a very hit/miss approach to transfers. This is something that needs a bit more consideration and focus. Not seen any staff casualties for what is potentially £20+ million wasted over the last 1-3 years. for a club our size that is a huge amount to squander

I don't think he is great, but the few Everton fans I know say he was one of their better performers last year, and preferred him in the first XI to Jelavic, who just never looked like scoring.

Still, he is doing his best to reassemble that relegated squad.

I have said all along that Everton will struggle under Martinez, mccarthy for Felaini isnt the best move and like you say he has essentially bought players from the team that he relegated. Lukaku is a strong signing though, it certainly shows his value to a team when you look at WBA this year.

Everton have always been solid but never prolific and RMs philosophy has always been to try and outscore the opposition, they are in trouble IMHO

GS is just as much as a WUM as BS. Wouldn't be surprise if its the same person, seeing as though Glasgow used to be Bournemouth Saint, which has the same initials as Barry Sanchez.

didn't Bournemouth Saint work for Barclays though, that might put him in a position to know a few things although GS doesn't seem to actually do much work at all, could be on night shift I suppose.

The worst thing about Martinez is the fact that he really doesn't bother with defensive strategies...

Fellaini for James McCarthy at a £14m profit is a good move. I doubt the former would ever be a natural fit for a Martinez team so to offload him for a younger, more suitable player is wise and they'll be very pleased to have made that much money from it. The irreplacable Baines would have been a far, far greater loss.

Does anyone know what actually happens to players such as Barnard, Sharp and Lee if they don't get a club before the end of the loan window. Do they still turn up for training every day? Do they train with the reserves / youth team? I mean, especially for someone like Lee Barnard who hasn't played for us for some time now. Do they just sit around at home and play Fifa? Genuinely wondering, does anyone know?

Don't know for sure, but would imagine that they will train and play with the dev squad.

Can't imagine people would want to take players totally out of shape.

Cardozo would have been a good signing. Wonder whether there is any truth to it. Doesn't seem to fit in with the general age range. Would certainly have made things interesting up front and would tend to indicate that Osvaldo and Rodriguez are more likely to play as attacking midfielders.

How old is Osvaldo?

That's the old-fashioned way, where the route to the first team for promising youngsters is blocked by "journeymen". I don't think we do that anymore.
