Morgan Schneiderlin eligible for a British passport?

In the Football 365 mailbox today, a letter from a 'John Daniels' states that he has heard that Morgan is eligible for a British passport and therefore could play for England.

Doubt he would ever want to, he seems to be a proud frenchman to me, but is this true?

He will play for France eventually, plus he's played @ U21 level.

And also, wouldn't he need an English blood relative to make this even possible?

Under FIFA rules players can become naturalised citizens, hence Deco playing for Portugal not Brazil.

From wikipedia:

None of Deco's great grandparents, grandparents or parents were Portuguese and therefore under Fifa's player eligibility rules required Portuguese citizenship to be considered eligible.

Manuel Almunia was also eligible for England having lived here for 5 years.

Isn't there some new rule that requires a player to have a dual-nationality at the time of him playing U21 internationals for his birth nation if he wants to change to the other nation later?

In other words, if Morgan had been born with an English nationality he could have changed but because he's already represented France before obtaining the English nationality he cannot change. I can't seem to find this online but I'm pretty sure I read that FIFA changed this a while back.

Article 18.1.a within the Fifa statutes outlines that any player who has represented their country in an official competition, at whatever level (i.e. including youth level), would at that time need to have held a passport for the country they later wish to play for in order to be permitted to make the switch.

Look at you quoting statute. You are Matthew Le God and I claim my free ride on Uncle Avram's Thai carousel.

nope, its only the UK countries who can't do it due to some agreement between them.

That loophole still exists, there is a gentleman's agreement between the 5 home nations not to poach from each others youth teams but it can still happen, NI/ROI do it a fair bit.

Bearsy covers why it can't happen between other nations though, need to have a UK passport when he's playing in France U17's (or at least eligible is the more likely interpretation given uk players getting into ROI's squad willy nilly)

Anyone know if Deschamps has ever gone on record to explain why he hasn't selected Schneiderlin yet? Maybe it's a simple case of them having too many riches in Morgan's position?

Perhaps he shares the wum opinion that he has become absolute rubbish and will never be able to play football again because we signed Wanyama.

Deschamps likes a certain type of player, I'm going to give you a list of names and you'll see what I mean

Kondogbia,Pogba,Guillavogui,Sissoko, Capoué,M'Vila why even the ever dependable Gonalons has been dropped and Cabaye has been temporarily sidelined because he's in dispute with Newcastle and suspended for the first qualifier (then again so is Pogba).

Morgan is paying the price for being put aside from the system because he didn't comply when the U21 coach of the time (since sacked for failure to qualify for the U21 Euro) told him to find a "better club". True he's had a couple of minor selections since then but was never part of their system. Deschamps also has a penchant for players playing in european competitions, f you look this summer all those not playing in Europe have moved on to clubs who are ,in some cases the instant that their club has been knocked out like Guilavogui. In brief Morgan is paying for his loyalty to Saints by being cast aside from the National Team. Deschamps doesn't watch him or have him watched, there's very little hope that he'll get a call whilst Deschamps calls the shots.

Naturelment Jacques Corque, non?

they do have a bloke called Sebastien Corchia, great little LB but as he plays for Sochaux and they're not willing to sell him to Lyon for a packet of KP nuts and an orange he's out of the National team as well. 26 U21 games but not a single full cap, with DD you either play for a club he thinks is worthy or you don't get the nod.

Jesus, not this again. Can someone just search for the last time this was answered and post the link, it's a lot easier.

Anyway the problem will disappear with Deschamps, he's a knob and only likes a certain type of player. If you think the English are critical of Woy's selection process you should see the comments on Deschamps in L'Equipe's forums. His choices are completely arbitrary, like Benzema who hasn't scored for France for about 2 years but he plays for Real so he keeps getting picked.

He can't play for England colin, they closed that loophole.

He can actually. He was also asked it directly in an interview over the summer (I think it was saintsplayer) and he basically said that he would be flattered if the call up came, but that he wants to play for france one day.
