bridge too far Posted 2 September, 2013 Posted 2 September, 2013 I've just read this very interesting article about architecture (or lack of) in our fair City. http://www.jonestheplanner.co.uk/2011/07/southampton-dreams.html Sadly I don't get 'home' anywhere near enough these days so I don't have an up-to-date view, but it does sadden me when I see so many grand old buildings demolished.

pap Posted 4 September, 2013 Posted 4 September, 2013 Aye finishing off what the Germans started Mike Harding, in his book the Armchair Anarchists Almanac, says that town planners have done more damage to British towns than the Luftwaffe ever managed. I can't help myself. I'm a huge fan of Georgian, Edwardian and Neo-classical buildings, things that are in abundance in some cities and sadly lacking in Southampton. We reached our architectural peak a century ago. If I had my way, every new building would look like them. I know that's not remotely practical, but what can I say? Huge fan.

dellboypete Posted 5 September, 2013 Posted 5 September, 2013 Aye finishing off what the Germans started Anyone on here who remembers the City in the early 60's will recall that there were still loads of bombsites around. The main city centre had been largely rebuilt but venture further down towards the docks and it took a long time for for those to get sorted out.
Seaford Saint Posted 5 September, 2013 Posted 5 September, 2013 Taking the floating bridge from Woolston into town once over the river meant walking through loads of slums, probably bomb sites.
Whitey Grandad Posted 5 September, 2013 Posted 5 September, 2013 Riverside Park and the car park at Hamble quayside are but two of the new areas created from rubble from the Blitz.
Minty Posted 5 September, 2013 Posted 5 September, 2013 Really interesting piece that, even if it was written in 2011. Can't help but agree with so many of its conclusions, even if much of it is dressed-up in planner/architect language!
