Dan Johnson Posted 2 September, 2013 Share Posted 2 September, 2013 Gareth Bale@GarethBale1111m Thanks to both @SouthamptonFC and @SpursOfficial for helping me to reach this point in my career... two very special clubs Nice touch, does this move enhance the reputation of Saints FC? DT Posted 2 September, 2013 Share Posted 2 September, 2013 Was just about to post similar. Makes me so angry hearing Spurs fans (who have nicked our song as well, the unimaginative idiots), claiming that Bale was a 'one-club man', and papers glossing over his time with us. Oh well, good luck to him. Right move, at the right time.

Tony F Posted 2 September, 2013 Share Posted 2 September, 2013 On breakfast TV (BBC) this morning, after the the so-called expert had been wittering about Bale, Real Madrid and Tottenham for a minute or so, the lady presenter suggested he talk about Saints too....... So he changed his wittering to how we'd started the season quite well, had signed good players like Wanyama etc etc. She had to intervene to make to clear she was expecting him to mention how Bale came to Spurs via our youth system. He then had to cuff it; he clearly had no idea if there was a sell-on clause or not. Experts? Hmm..... very lightweight journalist I reckon. WindsorSaint Posted 2 September, 2013 Share Posted 2 September, 2013 From the BBC Transfer Deadline Day: "We've been asked how much money Southampton will make from the Gareth Bale transfer. The answer is absolutely nothing. Saints did have a 25% sell-on clause in the deal to sell Bale to Tottenham, but is was renegotiated when the south-coast club were in deep financial trouble. As part of the new deal, Saints got Spurs goalkeeper Tommy Forecast." I thought we still stood to get £1-2million...?

WindsorSaint Posted 2 September, 2013 Share Posted 2 September, 2013 BBC now saying: "Further to the Gareth Bale sell-on question, some of you are suggesting that Saints get about £2m for developing the player. Not much compared to 25% of £85m, though, is it?" Does #factlessallen work there now?

lifeintheslowlane Posted 2 September, 2013 Share Posted 2 September, 2013 How many Spurs fans can say they were there when Bale made his senior debut and scored his first senior goal? Not many I'd guess. Just like Alan Shearer's debut. I claim both.
Jimmy_D Posted 2 September, 2013 Share Posted 2 September, 2013 We laugh in the face of a mere £20m. Imagine if SISU had succeeded, and we were in Coventry's position now, missing out on £20m.... *shudder* Shows you how fast we've risen, where we're missing out on £20m we might have had, and the general feeling seems to be annoyance, rather than it being devastating. sunrise Posted 2 September, 2013 Share Posted 2 September, 2013 85 million and 300 grand a week, I'm sorry that is totally insane, I don't blame Bale for taking it, most if not all of us would do the same. However, football has has been so grotesquely corrupted by money that the only way things would change is if some of the big names went bankrupt. As pleased as I am for Bale that he will play for one of the top clubs - it is tainted by the fact his transfer breaks the barrier yet again of what players can cost and be paid. It's a bad thing for football that such figures are quoted and presents a very skewed view of what is important in the world.

He will earn over £15m a year. what the hell. 24 years old and getting that a year. Not to mention the incredible signing on bonus he would have got to enable him to setup in spain. TBH, if he was injured for life tomorrow (i hope to god he isn't...!!) then he'd still never, ever need to do a days work again.

Like most players he'll probably do something once he retires, for wellbeing as much as anything.
