Official: Saints academy player most expensive player ever

The best player I've had the privilege of watching live at St Mary's in recent years, even at 17 you could tell he was going to become a world class player.

I always felt he was more than a LB, I think most of our fans did, and fair play to Spurs for developing him even further and turning him into one of the most potent attacking players in the world.

I must admit, I do feel a sense of pride seeing one of our academy players turning out at Real Madrid. I hope he tears the league up.

Extremely proud to see him become the most expensive player in history. Can still remember the precocious youngster making his debut at the back end of the 05/06 season.

It was against Milwall wasn't it? If i remember that far back.

He bombed up and down the line that day as well, was not scared to attack.

I also remember how Derby kicked the kid off the park so he wasn't avalaible in the play off 2nd leg. Thugs.

Wish him all the best in Spain. Hopefully he can stay clear of injuries that so often ruin things and produce some good football in partnership with the other stars they have. I do have a feeling he's a tad over-priced though!

On another note, we are due some sort of payment from this - not from the sell on, but some sort of development fee. Is it 2%, 5%?

It's still a decent little windfall for us, whatever it is. Could fund a nice little deadline day loan deal...

He was a fantastic player. His crosses were quality, and back in the early days he didn't have his searing pace that he has now - Back then he used to just drift past players.

For a 17 year old, he used to just own the left side of the pitch for us.

Was it Burley that called him a "Rolls Royce" of a player? Always thought that was a great description.

Yep, think we relegated them to League 1 that day.

And yes, that play-off semi final, his last game for us. Still can't stand Derby to this day for that, their karma came quickly in the top flight.

It was Kevin Blackwell @ Luton who said that. We won up there 2-0 at the backend of the season, and he owned that left side. He just glided past players but kept the ball within inches of his toe, all afternoon. He was a joy to watch that day.

5% development fee so £4.25m :)

That's a decent little windfall to be honest.

Although if I were the club, I'd throw that straight back into the academy.

If we hadn't cashed in on the deal when we did, we'd be sat here with £21.25m. In fact, it would probably be more as Spurs would have asked Madrid for more knowing we'd get a decent chunk.

Oh well, at least we got to see Forecast at St Mary's. In the warm up.

...

I have had six very happy years at Tottenham but it's the right time to say goodbye.

"We've had some special times together over the years and I've loved every minute of it.

"I would like to thank everyone at the Club; the Chairman, Board, staff, coaches and players and, most of all, the fantastic fans, who I hope will understand this amazing career opportunity.

"I am not sure there is ever a good time to leave a club where I felt settled and was playing the best football of my career to date. I know many players talk of their desire to join the club of their boyhood dreams but, I can honestly say, this is my dream come true.

"I am well aware that I would not be at the level I am today were it not for, firstly Southampton, and then Spurs, standing by me during some of the tougher times and affording me the environment and support they have.

"Tottenham will always be in my heart and I'm sure that this season will be a successful one for them. I am now looking forward to the next exciting chapter in my life, playing football for Real Madrid."

It's not that much. Think I read somewhere that its 5% in total, but something to do with his age at the time, so the development fee is 5%, but we only get a proportion of that, Spurs get the rest of it.

I remember watching Bale in a 2-2 draw with Barnsley at Oakwell during the '07 season. If you'd have told me then that he would go on to be the most expensive player of all time, I'd have laughed in your face.

I took the trouble + incovenience of reading FIFA rules and it said you get share of 5% of transfer fee:

– Season of 12th birthday: 5% (i.e. 0.25% of total compensation);

– Season of 13th birthday: 5% (i.e. 0.25% of total compensation);

– Season of 14th birthday: 5% (i.e. 0.25% of total compensation);

– Season of 15th birthday: 5% (i.e. 0.25% of total compensation);

– Season of 16th birthday: 10% (i.e. 0.5% of total compensation);

– Season of 17th birthday: 10% (i.e. 0.5% of total compensation);

I make that 2%. I figure he was 17 when he moved.

So around £1.7m then. Still worth having !

Pleased for him. One of few world class players that comes across as a decent guy and a model professional. Fifa 14 will have a shed load of printing to do now he is a Madrid player.

I remember my two Spurs mates saying he was totally rubbish when he struggled therer initially. Fickle fickle f*cksticks.

Best of luck to him. Was always going to go onto big things but I never thought this big!

Does seen weird the most expensive player in the world is Welsh though!

Why? They do produce some good 'uns occassionally. Best CF in the world ever, Big Ron, and then there's that Giggs bloke who was quite good as well (not to mention John Charles foe the oldies).

Maybe we can use the 2% to try to attract a replacement for Matt Crocker, the Academy seems to be having a bit of a blip since he left, and as far as I can tell he has not been replaced as yet.

A 'blip'? If you are talking about recent U18 and U21 results then you should direct that criticism at Dodd and Hunter. Crocker's job was less about coaching youngsters directly and more on the strategic, management side of things.

His legacy, and that of whoever takes over the academy, should be measured over years (and possibly decades,) not six weeks.

Not that we needed it too much with the reputation it already has at the moment, but this is the icing on the cake as a case study to sell the academy to the absolute best young players in the country.

Has any other academy produced the most expensive player in the world twice ?

Not sure, but i hear that West Ham (the academy of football) have England and Wales next big things.... Jack Collison and James Tomkins :uhoh: :lol:

Jack Collison was a Wales U21 when he signed for West Ham, and has 14 senior caps going back 5 years, so somewhat unlikely they ever claimed that of him.

Don't forget Mark Noble. God knows why he isn't a dead cert in the England squad...

I heard it was 2 million we have received from this and apparently we had something to do with the hold up as Daniel Levy was trying to get out of paying us, NC was not having any of it

I don't believe they have any say in that, it's an official FA guideline. The FA would have paid that to us, not Spurs.

pleased for the lad for getting his dream move. However, agree with many saying that the fee paid was way above his value, he's going to have tons of expectations placed on him, I'm not sure if he'll be a success over there. but still best of luck to him
