Why has everyone reverted to questioning the manger ?

So 3 games in and 4 points on the board, a few on this forum seem to be worried or questioning The manager IMO for some strange reason. Yesterday will of disappointed us due to the start we've had but just can't believe there's threads already about the next possible manager.

Couple of points....

A. We, at least I hope have all (me included) looked forward to this season, mainly as we managed to stay up last season after the start we had and have now signed some good players. Its a very exciting time if your a saints fan as we are looking like this vision NC talked about is "happening"

B. Reality, it seems to be the case that when we lose (even the big boys lose from time to time) then we either need to get rid of players or sign new ones. Good to very good players never play to there ability every game, only the top, world class players perform week in week out, that's why they get paid 1/4 of a mill plus each week and play for the biggest teams in the world, think of when your at work, do you perform to the top of your game day in / day out ? This being said I have to say that a few of our players don't seem to be firing every or any games, GR is one of these. After seeing him play vs Barnsley mid week I still think he believes he has unlimited time on the ball when its at his feet, maybe as soon as he gets the ball we need to shout man on to help I'm out ?

C. Our manager. Pochettino obviously has something about him, his subs yesterday didn't make sense to many people, including me but at least he was trying something. I for one will stick by him as I believe he likes it at Southampton and is looking at the long run (season or 2 after this) in these seasons he will have a better understanding of the English game and how it all works. This being said I wish he'd attach himself to us more, sounds silly but wearing the team colour more ( red tie maybe) and show a bit more love to the fans, especially on away matches. I'm still confident he's the right man for us though and a few poor performances let alone one won't change that.

We are a good team, we have great support and are going places.

All IMO of course.

lets be honest, far too many expected 9 points from 3 games, or at least 7.

too much talk of being nearly as good as liverpool and better than arsenal. quite embarrassing

we played well at WBA and battered sunderland. granted we have not scored from open play but we are not far off

we never played well at all yesterday and still created a few chances.

we wont be challenging the top 4 any time soon. and we will have more off days like yesterday, like every single other midtable team

Would you not agree that it is fair, on a football forum, to question and debate the tactics and selection of the team manager, particularly after a dip in form?

If not, we might as well closed the forum down lock, stock and barrel. Or question the tea-lady perhaps?

I think this is it. There's talk that we want to get into Europe, but for me a season of consolidation whilst finishing slightly higher than last year would be progress. Then you push on again the season after. I hope Cortese is as patient though, unfortunately I don't think he is.

The problem is this talk has come from the top of the club down, some of this was talked about before we'd even kicked a ball last season. There is a certain arrogance about the club which is seeping into the fan base. We should be concentrating on consolidating our position and aiming to finish higher than last season and building rather than making brash claims about what we are going to do.

Is four points from three games a dip in form? Maybe it's too early to tell - fancy that!

The "fun" thing is that the same people that all summer shouted about inactiveness in the transfer window and that we dont sign enough players are now complaining why the manager didn´t play the players we had last year....

At least be consistent in your opinions and arguements...

It's an interesting one really.

Personally, I really like Pochettino. I like his style and I like the way he has tried to get the team playing football. However, as a manager, I am still unconvinced. He clearly has a great footballing brain and the strategies he has implemented against the top sides have been fantastic. I love the aggressive, pressing style. However, tactically, and his ability to change the course of a game after it's started (i.e. subs, altering formations etc) still leaves a lot to be desired. A lot of his changes have seemed to negatively impact our performance and that, of course, has got to be a concern. The Lallana sub being a perfect example of this. This is particularly an issue against teams around us in the league table. We seem unable to break defensive sides down. West Ham home will be another test and if we lose/draw that, I think even more fans will start to question whether we have the ability to break down defensive sides. Very interested to see what he does with his team selection. Being at home, I really want to see Ramirez, Osvaldo and Lallana all start.

Be honest here Batman, since you are always Mr Negative it seems....

Do you think that after the West Brom match, most fans would have expected to achieve at least another 4 from Sunderland and Reading. Certainly 3?

It is blindingly obvious that the squad chemistry no longer works, we no longer have a best 11, and we still have no plan b, despite spending circa 35m.

For the outlay, we should have done better vs Norwich and Sunderland... or are you saying it is okay to be mediocre? because to defend the last 2 games is basically saying its okay to be okay, when as a fan, I want us to always be pushing for the best we can be.

So of the three games this year, you wouldn´t say that Sunderland was our best performance?? (not result, performance)

Depends what you mean by a good performance, we had lots of the ball because they defended deep, we passed it very slowly and created very little compared to the amount of possession we had. We struggled to score against a team a newly promoted side who are favourites to go down beat easily yesterday. Based on that then no, it wasn't our best performance.

I think it's fine to have Europe as an aim, but there is absolutely no way we can achieve this this season, or probably next season. Unless of course we can win a cup.

But as we've been told many times Jamie, that was okay because we were adapting to the premier league then.

that was and is a load of bollix,

the three promoted team that came up this season, dont have as good as squad we did last year, dont have the next ferguson managing them and they have all won

The fact that the happy clappers are already talking about a season of consolidation sums it all up. The same happy to have a club crew were spouting on about top 6 and having a better midfield than Man United. Just a few weeks ago

Very few were talking about top 6, and while an alarming amount thought we could hold our midfield up to Man United's it was more food for thought than a serious point about being that good as a team.

I think we will finish in the top half this season, and that forecast will not change unless/until we are a significant number of games in and are seriously off course. At the moment we are a truly insignificant number of games in, but even if we take them to mean anything we are actually on course for around 50 points.

For the outlay, we should have done better vs Norwich and Sunderland... or are you saying it is okay to be mediocre? because to defend the last 2 games is basically saying its okay to be okay, when as a fan, I want us to always be pushing for the best we can be.

It is not to defend the last two games, it is to point out that they do not spell the imminent decline of our football club.

36m is a drop of **** in the ocean compared to the big teams, our only realistic endgame is to be best of the rest.

If the squad chemistry was so great last season we would have beaten the three teams we have played so far home and away last season, oh wait las season we failed to beat any of them once.

I'm sure on your footballs manager game, you spend all the money and the team wins every time, none of this taking time to gel rubbish or requirement for patience.

I'm happy with consolidation this season. But never though we would make the top 6 or thought we had a midfield better than Man U. These claims are just laughable. A top ten finish is achievable, but only if we are lucky with the injuries and up front can click, which as yet hasn't happened.

compared to the start of last season, the fact we are unhappy that we only have 4 points from 9 tells you that we have improved no ends

this time last year we just wanted to look like we belonged in the prem. and not some comedy outfit

fuk me, 10 games at start of last season we were utterly appalling.

First 10 games we were creating chances and scoring freely but defending appalling and had KD in goal. Fixing a lack of creativity and inability to score is much harder to solve than a leaky defence imo

Nothing much in that post to comment on actually besides what I answered too......you thought it was not (??) our best performance so far this year. I think it was.

Different opinions, what to comment about then really...

But your post about us winning the games where we have more shots at goal is wrong, you said so yourself. I'm not even sure why you're bringing The Sunderland game into it, we had more shots at goal and didnt win, it just emphasises how wrong you are.

Well now you are out the with your usual lies. (not that anyone is surprised though)

I only talked about our performances in that original thread (cause that was the OP of that thread), not so hard to find it if you need to read it again.

What I did say is that teams (not us specifically) statistically win more games if they produce more shots than their opponents. Those stats for us is different, but not what the thread was about.

I agree that 3 games is too early to judge. We have 4 points which should ease the pressure until at least late Sept. That said if we look back at these 3 games and the previous 6 in the Prem, then we have a run of form with just 1 win. 8 points from 9 games is relegation form.

Picking up 4 points from this season's 3 games and two were away games, could look good, but all three were against teams that are not in the top 6. We even dropped points in our only home game to Sunderland, a team that has lost its other 2 games. Overall this season's form is probably equivalent to 40/45 point season based on these 3 opponents. But if we beat WHU and CP in 2 of the next 3 then the concerns will go away.

If it is fair to question the manager after 3 games of a season, why is it not fair to question why he is being questioned? I think that is equally important, especially when the answer to me is that a win at WBA doesn't make us top 6 material and a loss at Norwich doesn't make us relegation material with a summers' worth of bad signings and a manager that deserves the bullet

We were and it didn´t work out in that short time no.

If we can go back to performing like that it probably will work out for us too.

Or do you think teams have better chances of winning by performing bad and not produce more chances than their opponents??

But you said statistically it isn't. So despite supposedly playing well and having more shots at goal we aren't winning as many. Your own stats have proven you wrong. Sorry if you don't like it, but that's the FACTS.

Massive chips on shoulders here.

Also what's with the constant competition to prove people wrong all the time, and I mean not just on comments made recently but comments that get constantly dragged back up all the time.

I mean god the Internet is serious business. Must give people a hell of a buzz being the supreme rules of Saints web.

We were not appalling against Man City or Manure, in fact for most of the game against Manure we were ****ing brilliant. We were appalling against an awful Wigan side admittedly (though Fonte's glaring mistake was immaterial), and completely lost the plot against the Arse. From then on we started to improve slowly.

This season we have been goodish against WBA (though they are not the team they were), average against an awful Sunderland side and poor against an average Norwich side. But we have defended well in all three, apart from 2 lapses (Lovren has slotted in brilliantly) and looked mediocre in the centre and up front, creativity and finishing is lacking. But no way am I questioning the manager at the moment. I have to assume Clyne and Shaw were not fully fit and the plan was not to use them except in an emergency, and there was clearly a plan to replace Lallana with Gaston again, a mistake by MP perhaps not to see that Lallana was playing very well and to change the plan rather than stick to the pre-match arrangement.
