Why is Clyne not starting?

I've been saying this for ages... Considerably better.

Define 'ages'. Clyne was injured throughout the whole pre-season. Chambers, who had not played a minute of PL football prior to this season, deputised brilliantly in the first two games.

Is there any reason to bang the drum when Clyne's absence has been largely circumstantial and Chambers has performed so admirably when called upon? Let the alone the fact that THREE games have been played.

No doubt that Clyne will step back into the team when fully match fit but let's not forget he only completed his first 90 minutes on Tuesday. Asking him to do that twice in one week might have been a bit too much after coming back from a reasonable lay-off.

Let's not forget Clyne has four years more experience on Chambers and a year of that in the PL. It goes without saying that he is 'considerably better' at this moment in time, but not sure how helpful it is comparing the two in such a reactionary manner.

Clyne has been fit for a couple of weeks. While we're on the subject, JWP is not a RM, though fortunately MP changed it at halftime.

To think that we've dismantled our complete right hand side, that is, Punch and Clyne who had great chemistry is bizarre. The responsibility sits firmly and squarely on MP's shoulders.

I think there's a bit of a "carrot and stick" approach from Pochettino with Chambers - basically, until today he'd played pretty well, and as the man in possession of the shirt, until he does something to deserve being dropped then he'd keep his place. From a player motivation perspective, it makes sense, otherwise where's the motivation for any player - not just Chambers - to perform if they know that even if they don't put a foot wrong they'll be out of the team as soon as someone else regains fitness after an injury?

Redmond gave him a torrid time today, and I was surprised he wasn't taken out of the firing line in the second half when Clyne's pace and greater experience might have prevented the goal. I fully expect Clyne to be back in the side after the international break.

Agree with all the above. Team selection in general is starting to concern me, coupled with the loan of Puncheon . Out of our new signings, LOVREN has played better consistently .

Team selection starting to concern me too. Wanyama's done nothing that makes him look like a better option than Cork. On a positive note, Lovren looks pretty consistent. Too early to say about Osvaldo but he looked totally out of touch with his team mates today. Personally I think he'll be a huge flop but I'd love to be proved wrong.

Still wondering why the **** we let Puncheon go. Can only assume MP has someone he considers to be a better option in mind.

I think we've got a good side but I'm really not convinced with MP.

Agree - probably the same is true for Fonte.

Must be a fitness thing. I hope we are not trying to crowbar our academy players in for the sake of it.

if you've read the same reports I have........Clyne was injured throughout the pre-season whilst Chambers played the RB role with an exceptional amount of praise from many sources.

If Clyne wasn't " 100% fit " and had little / no match practice... then Chambers proved he was a good choice. He did little wrong in the first two games to convince me he was a bad selection.

(Last season we used Ward-Prowse at the start of the season in lieu of the absent Jack Cork, and he did better than some others around that time).

I expect to see Clyne return in the near future, but IMHO it is no condemnation of Chambers who will deserve a bench place from now on. Clyne is older and more experienced but needs games too.
