alpine_saint Posted 4 September, 2013 Share Posted 4 September, 2013 But at least we're showing some ambition? You'd be critical if we didn't spend money. We have. You can't have it all. This season is going to be close across the board as a lot of top teams haven't strengthened that much but the teams below have. Norwich have spent good amounts of money, away they were always going to be a challenge. We didn't perform, that much has been debated to death, but we still "only" lost 1-0 so it's not quite an absolute disaster. We can't pass that much judgement after 3 games. If come Christmas we're faltering then we have a problem but surely not just in August? Surely? I can accept what you are saying, but I would have expected a bit more urgency to our play and not such a dearth of chance-making. I was at the Besiktas game and we had a devastating 20-25mins after they scored. And that was a friendly. Against a team that is looking for European honours. We also made Schalke sweat in the first half. Where has that all gone now the real games have started ? I personally think the squad is unbalanced or needs a significant gelling time, or both. Possibly has something to do with the opposition? Schalke and besiktas (btw, what european honours are they ever looking for?) both tried to play some football, as did west brom where we dominated and created plenty. Sunderland, however, parked the bus so it's a bit different. Mind you even then we created enough chances to win the game at a canter. Norwich tried to out press us, not play football, and as a result neither side created much at all. It's possible the attempt at a change of shape contributed to this, but I think a one game experiment isn't really enough to go on to support your view. One newspaper report said that we never got out of second gear. I felt that the Sunderland game was a bit like that. Almost as though the players had just got back from a layoff.
