Teetotal James Ward-Prowse believes staying clear of the booze can help fire him into England’s World Cup plans.

The Saints midfielder, 18, says he has never touched a drop of alcohol and turns down invites to celebrity parties.

Ward-Prowse, is aiming for a champagne performance at Norwich today, but said: “I am not a party-goer or a drinker. In fact I have never drunk at all.

“I have had loads of offers to go to parties, events and stuff like that but I turn them all down.

“That is how dedicated I am to getting the best out of myself. I have never been interested in getting attention from girls. I just ignore all that sort of stuff because I am not someone who wants to be in all the newspapers.

“Hopefully other players will realise if they really want to play at the highest level you have to look after yourself on and off the pitch.

“I model myself on Steven Gerrard. He is the perfect role model with the way he plays and the way he conducts himself.”

Ward-Prowse’s impressive form has landed him a place in Gareth Southgate’s maiden England Under-21 squad.

Within the excellent book 'The Nowhere Men' about professional football scouting (well worth a read), a Liverpool scout commented at our Cup game vs Stevenage last season that JWP reminded him of Frank Lampard in the way he always had his head up when receiving the ball and in his clever tactical play. He said that at that point JWP was the best young player he had seen that season and he would have clearly fit into Liverpool's midfield formation under Rodgers.

I made the same comparison and was shot down in flames.

Not being funny, but I know people who didn't go to parties or get drunk as teenagers too. It's not much of a sacrifice if it's not something you'd enjoy anyway and isn't something you actually want to do. There's the rest of your life for being like everyone else.

What the **** does this say in english?

It says, in autocorrect, "The younger players need to make more of an effort to bond with their team mates. Nobody likes the stay at home tee total loser."

Why whether anyone likes him has any relevance to his professional footballing career if he's a model pro is somewhat open to question.

Fine. But how is he ever going to get a blowey?

If our young players don't get regularly noshed off, how can we possibly progress as a serious football outfit?!

7 bedroom house. Different bj every night and none of the girls need to know about the others. the lad has his head screwed on!

Steven Gerrard??......come on. If he's serious about not being a playboy Gerrard is not a role model. He's had plenty of off field grief and how he wasn't locked up for that Southport scuffle I'll never know.........oh that's right it was at Liverpool Crown with a Scouse jury!

That's a disappointment, I like my footballers to be out all night then rock up to St Mary's surrounded by a bevy of birds and pockets full of casino chips; then get on the pitch turn in a blinder, scoring a hatrick before getting back on it until Monday morning training.

Yes, the good old days at The Dell. Win won, lose two.

Great attitude from JWP. Also likely to be responsible for circulating the embarrassing/incriminating photos from the Xmas party as the only sober one on site?

Hey Potch, wadaya mean I am not in the first team, have you seem these pictures of you and the girl from the booking office.

Hard as many may find it to believe, it has been known on occasion for some (otherwise perfectly normal) Human Beings not to develop a taste for alcohol!

Yeah I know, it's a funny old world isn't it ...

Got a link? Sounds ridiculous to me. WUM.

You're terrible at this.

Before you write him off, have you seen him play this season????

Forget about last season as this season he has been superb, looks alot stronger is taking free-kicks and corners and getting much more involved in final 3rd.

Mopo is really bringing out the best in him imho
