Saint-Armstrong Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/southampton-wonder-kid-james-ward-prowse-snubs-2239450#ixzz2dUXN0gy6 Teetotal James Ward-Prowse believes staying clear of the booze can help fire him into England’s World Cup plans. The Saints midfielder, 18, says he has never touched a drop of alcohol and turns down invites to celebrity parties. Ward-Prowse, is aiming for a champagne performance at Norwich today, but said: “I am not a party-goer or a drinker. In fact I have never drunk at all. “I have had loads of offers to go to parties, events and stuff like that but I turn them all down. “That is how dedicated I am to getting the best out of myself. I have never been interested in getting attention from girls. I just ignore all that sort of stuff because I am not someone who wants to be in all the newspapers. “Hopefully other players will realise if they really want to play at the highest level you have to look after yourself on and off the pitch. “I model myself on Steven Gerrard. He is the perfect role model with the way he plays and the way he conducts himself.” Ward-Prowse’s impressive form has landed him a place in Gareth Southgate’s maiden England Under-21 squad.
Colinjb Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 Hope that isn't just empty rhetoric. If that truly is his attitude then my respect for him raises only further. There's time to party on retirement, when made for life.
Pugwash Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 Great respect for the lad and I think he might just make the squad. Not sure Gerrard's the 'perfect' role model for him though...
kpturner Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 Just bought a 7 bedroom place in Fareham - surprising what you can afford if you don't waste money on the demon drink........mind you, Fareham??!
Colinjb Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 Just bought a 7 bedroom place in Fareham - surprising what you can afford if you don't waste money on the demon drink........mind you, Fareham??! Remember where he's from.
kpturner Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 Remember where he's from. I know that.....but he should know better by now - he he
Colinjb Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 I know that.....but he should know better by now - he he At least he is not investing his wages into Portsea Island!
pangy Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 Good luck to the lad,I think he can go far in the game.
Saint Charlie Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 Within the excellent book 'The Nowhere Men' about professional football scouting (well worth a read), a Liverpool scout commented at our Cup game vs Stevenage last season that JWP reminded him of Frank Lampard in the way he always had his head up when receiving the ball and in his clever tactical play. He said that at that point JWP was the best young player he had seen that season and he would have clearly fit into Liverpool's midfield formation under Rodgers.

I made the same comparison and was shot down in flames.
Bentley Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 To be fair, I've seen him in West Quay with his missus. I'm not surprised he broke his 'no attention in girls' attitude after seeing her
Suhari Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 Fine. But how is he ever going to get a blowey? If our young players don't get regularly noshed off, how can we possibly progress as a serious football outfit?!
sotonjoe Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 This is a concern. The younger players need to makeover of an effort to bond with their team mates. Nobody likes the stay at hike tee total loser.
Jonnyboy Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 To be fair, I've seen him in West Quay with his missus. I'm not surprised he broke his 'no attention in girls' attitude after seeing her rule 1.
PhilippineSaint Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 This is a concern. The younger players need to makeover of an effort to bond with their team mates. Nobody likes the stay at hike tee total loser. What the **** does this say in english?
The9 Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 Not being funny, but I know people who didn't go to parties or get drunk as teenagers too. It's not much of a sacrifice if it's not something you'd enjoy anyway and isn't something you actually want to do. There's the rest of your life for being like everyone else.
The9 Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 What the **** does this say in english? It says, in autocorrect, "The younger players need to make more of an effort to bond with their team mates. Nobody likes the stay at home tee total loser." Why whether anyone likes him has any relevance to his professional footballing career if he's a model pro is somewhat open to question.
Ralph Wiggum Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 This is a concern. The younger players need to makeover of an effort to bond with their team mates. Nobody likes the stay at hike tee total loser. He should take a leaf out of the Nile Ranger career book imo

Different bj every night and none of the girls need to know about the others. the lad has his head screwed on!
bangkoksaint Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 Steven Gerrard??......come on. If he's serious about not being a playboy Gerrard is not a role model. He's had plenty of off field grief and how he wasn't locked up for that Southport scuffle I'll never know.........oh that's right it was at Liverpool Crown with a Scouse jury!

That bloke headbutted his fists!
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 Great attitude from JWP. Also likely to be responsible for circulating the embarrassing/incriminating photos from the Xmas party as the only sober one on site?
Fan The Flames Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 That's a disappointment, I like my footballers to be out all night then rock up to St Mary's surrounded by a bevy of birds and pockets full of casino chips; then get on the pitch turn in a blinder, scoring a hatrick before getting back on it until Monday morning training.
scotty Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 Great attitude from JWP. Also likely to be responsible for circulating the embarrassing/incriminating photos from the Xmas party as the only sober one on site? He already said, he doesn't go to parties.

Yes, the good old days at The Dell. Win won, lose two.
mcjwills Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 Great attitude from JWP. Also likely to be responsible for circulating the embarrassing/incriminating photos from the Xmas party as the only sober one on site? Hey Potch, wadaya mean I am not in the first team, have you seem these pictures of you and the girl from the booking office.
Wes Tender Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 rule 1. Do not act incautiously when confronting little bald wrinkly smiling men?
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 Hard as many may find it to believe, it has been known on occasion for some (otherwise perfectly normal) Human Beings not to develop a taste for alcohol! Yeah I know, it's a funny old world isn't it ...

sfc1976 Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 Fair play I guess, but surely time can always be found to roast a few rotters in a Travelodge now and again.
Saint_clark Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 I'm not, looks like he could turn into a great goalscoring midfielder. Reminds me a lot of Lampard. To light weight imho. Not seen anything to suggest any link to Lampard Not scored a single goal for starters You're terrible at this.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 31 August, 2013 Posted 31 August, 2013 You're terrible at this. Before you write him off, have you seen him play this season???? Forget about last season as this season he has been superb, looks alot stronger is taking free-kicks and corners and getting much more involved in final 3rd. Mopo is really bringing out the best in him imho
