Have you ever gone out your way to watch an ex saint as a neutral?

The closest I came was seeing Guernsey play this week and half hoping le tiss was still on contract. Sadly not. So the question is, have you ever gone to a game as a neutral just to see an ex saint play?

I went to Southend vs Yeovil in the cup as a couple of mates was going. I expected to see Hoskins play. He did, and was quite good.

 

Seaborne was benched and Paul Smith was on the bench for Southend.

I went to watch Brentford play twice purely to watch Phil Warner (remember him!?) who we had loaned him to.

 

To be fair though my mum was seeing his dad, who took me.

Saw Ian Turner playing in goal for Waterlooville at Margate. Would you see that now? An FA Cup winner ekeing out a final pay-day in the Southern League.

I went to the Euros in Portugal '04 to watch Pahars, can't remember if he'd already retired at that point or just decided not to bother playing - he was certainly an irregular Saint in the 6 months before, but I can't recall if he chucked it in at Saints at the end of '04 or '05. Just realised it must have been the latter, as he played under Sturrock against Man City in early 2005.

 

Either way, he's an ex-Saint now.

 

I also used to go and watch Wales fairly often to see Paul Jones play seeing as it was local, and same with Bale at least once during the season he was in the Saints first team, which also happened to be my first year back in Southampton.

 

I kinda sorta went to see Newport v Accrington to see if Beattie had actually retired, too. That and the home city's first game back in the FL for 21 years.

Lee Hendrie comes close, capped for England, won the Intertoto Cup and an FA Cup runner up, retired in May after playing for Daventry, Chasetown and Redditch all below Conference level.

 

He's also been bankrupted though, and there's a notable story about Trevor Francis not wanting a signed Lee Hendrie shirt tied up in some weird property/ burglary story.

And breeeaaathhheeeeee. Relax mate, it was a funny remark from Saint, he's not slagging anybody off! It's true, we are running out of things to talk about. Evidently so, as we have a thread about watching ex-Saints players play for other clubs!!

I went to watch Steve Williams make his debut for Arsenal at Chelsea. I was gutted he had left us and watching him was part of the recovery process. (Still not completely over it now.)

Went to see and support Danny Wallace making his début for Man.Utd. at Pompey. Recall Paul Ince made his début the same night. Standing in with the fishy peep's was not fun.........
