A mate of mine reckons he's actually pretty good at English but just doesnt speak it unless he says the wrong thing ??

Simple answer is yes he can. He is worried that he will wont understand the questions from the media correctly and therefore give a incorrect answer leading to all sorts of "lost in translation" type stuff.

He did an interview tail end of the season which is probably on you tube somewhere. End of season awards hosted by Ed Chamberlain.

Maybe we should all learn Spanish?

We already do, judging by the "olé"s at sms any time we manage to string three passes together.

Interesting thread . We are so slow debating these issues ! So based on the op theme all our managers in future must have clause in there contracts saying they must speak perfect English with in six months of signing their contracts and the same goes for players .

What tosh

During the Solent commentary on Tuesday night, Adam Blackmore said that he had informally chatted to him in English and that his standard could be classed as 'pidgin English' !

Big Dave said that the fans wouldn't mind as long as he made the effort !

No judgement from me, just reporting what they said !!

I’ve stopped watching press conferences and pre/post match interviews as a 30 second message takes about 8 minutes.

I would think confidence is a must have for a manager?

If he can speak and understand English like so many claim, then its about time he started doing it.

This is an English club, with English speaking fans after all..... he needs to make more of an effort imho. (Get a red tie too)

Por favor, Sr. Pochettino. Siga haciendo entrevistas en español, siempre es divertido ver cómo ese pueblo garrapatas en twitter.

Y algunos chicos en Saintsweb no olvidar.....

Well DM would know wouldn't he, I don't understand much more than half of what he says and his accent grates on me but then I believe that the majority are content with his effots.

He's still bitter about the Malvinas, it's a personal protest against British Imperialism and what he sees as a dive by Michael Owen! Melancholic race, the Argentines...

I heard he spoke perfect English until he got his long hair cut off and lost his powers. Due to the playing-days flashbacks it gives him, now he can only speak English to fully-kitted up footballers.

HI Bender, you may have missed it but ... this is about the 5th ...or 6th thread on this subject.....so to put the matter to bed.

YES he does speak English (at a sort of lower-intermediate level) .and not " perfect English " as claimed recently by Chris Kamara (who is not the ideal person to make a judgement about good English)

As far as the numerous reports from other posters have shown: YES.... he speaks to the players in English during training (but occasionally has his translator on hand to clarify words).

He chooses to use a translator for media interviews as he is aware of his linguistic shortcomings and (probably) doesn't want to be caught out by stupid / controversial / idiotic journos ......asking stupid /controversial /idiotic questions.

Judging by his body language.... I guess he's getting used to all manner of English dialects, but sensibly uses the time in-between questions and translation to formulate his answer in his own language.

This is a good PR technique and statesman and diplomats use it all the time in public (even if they can understand the other language).

IN SHORT : he doesn't want to embarrass hmself or the club by giving a stupid answer to a stupid question.

I can speak French and live in Quebec but when I have something I need to do that is really important I will speak in English for fear of mis-understanding something or being misunderstood. It's only natural I guess.

Sorry what a load of cobblers!

It is up to MP whether he speaks to the press in whatever language he likes frankly, but I would love to know how you know why he chooses to speak Spanish?

Basically you don't and I agree with Bender in that I would prefer him to speak English as it seems all other continental managers do. The translations are terrible and often I have no idea what he really means or is trying to get across.

It will be interesting what the views on here will be if we lose a few games or play poorly, or he makes weird subs etc etc, then I suspect posters will want explanations in English, not Spanish........
