Gemmel Posted 29 August, 2013 Posted 29 August, 2013 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbcsYts7POk Is Weller the greatest singer songwriter ever? My money says he is. I remember top of the pops announcing that Beat surrender would be their last hit together. I smashed my telly up. I was 12. It was the first music that ever meant anything to me..... the irony being I was everything he hated and was singing against. I don't remember this interview, which he comes across like a thick ***t but his pre and post songs prove he isn't. The bloke has seamlessly crossed, punk, mod, ballad, rock, indie, Jazz and pop with monster lyrics and spawned a new generation of his tone. I appreciate music is a very personal thing, but is he the best of the best? Can't find too many that come close.

Firstly, there is a arts forum, surely thats the place for this thread. More importantly though, why the hell would you smash your TV up? That sounds like the action of a complete ****. Were you a bit of a bellend as a child? I am also intrigued by the comment about you representing everything that Weller was against. What does that mean? Are you Mark Thatcher?

Check out, for example, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Ray Davies, Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman, Richard Thompson - and then get back to me.

All nine of them could be jamming down the bottom of my garden but if the Jam reformed I'd happily leave them there and shell out £100 to walk to the other side of town to see Paul and the Boys.
alpine_saint Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 Weller is completely overrated. Its all cliched, derivative, and quite frankly, boring, from a person who has tried to reinvent himself as often as David Bowie but in a shorter timeframe. Has everybody forgotten The Style Council and his multiple (failed) attempts to re-write Harvest For The World ? Agree with Hamilton, plenty of other songwriters around with more to say and more eloquent prose.
trousers Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 music is a very personal thing You've answered your own question right there. There's no such thing as "best singer songwriter"
revolution saint Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 Weller's back catalogue is a bit of a mixed bag isn't it? I love The Jam and pretty much everything they've done but Style Council were awful and I don't really care for much of his solo stuff either (Wild Wood aside).
Bearsy Posted 30 August, 2013 Posted 30 August, 2013 my dad made me come with him to see weller one time. It was terrible. My dad said "how is you enjoying your weller, James" (my dad calls me James), and i said if i wanted to pay £50 to watch an old man wank i would of gone to dubai phil's stag do. I mean, I didn't say that really, I was polite and said oh yeah i like his dumb guitar playing or whatever, but i was thinking bout dubai phil wanking.
