CB Fry Posted 30 August, 2013 Share Posted 30 August, 2013 That was under Lowe-Life. And he managed to F**k up the negotiations big time. We got St Mary's with the Council's blessing, not Lowe-Life's As of now, the capacity would be 40000 minimum I reckon How'd you work that out? With a piddly little 24k stadium we might have got relegated before we did, and we would definitely be a far less attractive as an investment for random swiss billionaires. And if it was down to you, we'd have been taken over by your heroes at SISU. So we'd probably be playing our games at Aldershot by now. But you like being out of town, don't you Richmond? Golden Balls Posted 30 August, 2013 Share Posted 30 August, 2013 The redevelopment of the itches waterfront could be amazing. Long way off it seems though
solentstars Posted 30 August, 2013 Share Posted 30 August, 2013 The plans, possibly? It was proposed at 24000..yes it was but at the end it was suggested 38,000 but was scuppered has they would not allow the hotel and other add ons so lowe pulled the plug has it could not cover the costs without those but the labour run southampton city council stepped in and saved the day with help and guidance to get it built at st marys. sandwichsaint Posted 30 August, 2013 Share Posted 30 August, 2013 The Ricoh is available and we could extend it and have a purpose built 50k soccer-dome in a central location. Our foreign fans could fly in and we would be re-located in the geographical and sporting centre of the whole country. Admittedly pre-match hospitality would be a choice between Pizza Hut and KFC and we might have to re-brand our shirts to match the colour of the seats (I've heard sky blue is very popular in emerging markets) but what's 180 miles between friends? Get your facts right. A 4* hotel was proposed by EBC, as were a bowling alley, Planet Hollywood style restaurant and night club, sports shop, ice rink and various other things that would have been acceptable to EBC. What they would never allow was a shopping complex the size of the Chandlers Ford Asda and the multiplex cinema, the first because of the proximity of Eastleigh Town centre and the second because that was already planned for the Swan centre. Lowe tried to play hardball with the Council, who got fed up with his arrogant intransigence and we would indeed have been stuffed if Southampton City Council had not come up with the land at St Marys, which was originally designated for social housing. Without those self same Hotel and Add ons that Lowe needed ..... ??? Lowe did NOT get St Mary's for us. He ruined the Stoneham deal by trying to be too greedy And a quick response to CB Fry ... a) Stoneham would have been circa 38000 b) Yes, I did advocate SISU at the time, and for that, I was proved seriously wrong ...... and so were Coventry more's the pity. Bit strange though ?? Stoneham - What Lowe (allegedly) wanted ... New Stadium, 4* Hotel, Bowling Alley, Planet Hollywood stylr restaurant, Ice Rink plus various other things Lowe did not have as much "clout" or influence as some on here seem to think. In reality, he was more of a hindrance than a help, and not just with the Stadium scenario. St Marys - What we ended up with .... New Stadium, 2 Gasometers, Train line of no benefit to the Club, very poor access from Chapel area.

What we ended up with is a perfect sized stadium in the heart of the city centre and the club back to the site of its very beginnings. If you want to support a shopping complex on the edge of nowhere, go and support Bluewater or something. I'll stick with a city club in the city it represents. Crazy, I know. 100% Saint Posted 31 August, 2013 Share Posted 31 August, 2013 I don't really care that we could have had a 4* Hotel, bowling alley, restaurant or anything like that. That's all in the past now and we are building for the future. I would like an extension to the to one of the stands. Also I would like the extension to be a Safe-Standing zone, something of which i'm fully behind as it will increase capacity even more and (hopefully) bring down ticket prices.
