Steve de Ridder has a pop at English football culture

FC Utrecht signing Steve de Ridder has taken a swipe at the culture at former club Southampton.

De Ridder left Saints earlier this summer to sign with Utrecht.

"I gave up almost three quarters of my salary to get away," De Ridder told Voetbal International.

"English football is a decadent world, a middle class does not exist. You need a big expensive car, otherwise they will not even know you're there.

"A smart car is very nice, but not everything for me. At De Graafschap I had a Citroen C1, a small one. Happiness is in other small things.

"Here everything is familiar again, everyone is normal. I even enjoy a simple breakfast, without the beans and bacon."

Didn't he get a hair transplant last summer!?!

It had nothing to do with him being absolutely terrible then?

Nope. Everything to do with the way people with lots of money decide to spend lots of money. Nothing to do with football ability at all, given that he was almost certainly on similar money to many of them.

The comment about losing 3/4 of his salary does show the kind of wage cut players who don't see out their contracts might be being asked to take.

Sour grapes for not being good enough.

I'm also sure that players at Ajax or PSV (maybe some of his own team mates for that matter) aren't driving around in Seat Ibizas or VW Polos.

I also think he is quite hasty in his generalisations. From what I gather most Saints players do genuinely look to be into cars (judging by Gaston's import), and our club is not really one full of prima-donnas (nor does it indulge them into being one).

Not sure many of them have brothers who'll randomly pitch up in pubs at his team's away matches either and be massively enthusiastic about everything though, which was always amusing...

I didn't think he was "terrible" either, he scored a couple of goals in the Championship, but he was desperately unsuited to the style we decided to play and clearly wasn't going to get a chance in the Premier League when we moved even further away from traditional wing-play and running at players.

fair play to the guy...transfer that did not work out but (unlike others such as Sharp, Barnard, etc) decided he wanted to play more than earn a big fact check for doing nothing. Good for him - and where exactly is he slagging Saints off?

He isn't, his entire point is about him not being comfortable with what he saw as modern football values. He doesn't like beans and bacon with breakfast, either, but then he probably likes chips with mayo, so swings and roundabouts.

Maybe if we sign a couple more Jermaine Wrights and Zoltan Liptaks people will stop referring to De Ridder as terrible. I'd say he was a decent enough Championship player, the problem was we had already surpassed his level when he signed and were aiming to win the League.

He left to go and play football, rather than sit here and pick up a big fat pay cheque in the reserves. Can't we at least respect that. He's not having a swipe at Saints, just saying he doesn't particularly go for the Premier League lifestyle.

Having lived and worked in Belgium for 13 years, I can assure you all that 'motor snobbery' is exactly the same there as it is here !

I realise that (although he is Belgian) he is now playing in Holland where I suspect the same apples !

Fair do's that he has taken a pay cut and good luck to him for the future, in a place where he is probably more suited !!

De Ridder was absolutely awful.

He can't have been awful, he had pace.

The fact that he ran into corners, couldn't cross, couldn't pick out the first man and couldn't beat his marker didn't make him awful.

Cause he had PACE!

And as everyone on here knows pace is the only thing that makes a good footballer. It's either that or if a footballer isn't "lightweight". That's what make De Ridder better than Gaston and Wooton better than Morgan.

God some people really need to learn the rules of the mong board don't they?

"I gave up almost three quarters of my salary to get away,"

Didn't his contract expire?? In which case he had no choice. He can use all the extra cash he earnt in England to spend on sluts in Amsterdam.

Incorrect.

The contract was terminated by mutual consent. The next day he signed with FC Utrecht.

He is terrible.

He did well before became to us. He's doing ok since he left. From that I think you can conclude he is not terrible but he did not fit with either style of play and found it difficult to adapt. Good luck to him.

He didn't really have a pop, more saying that the glam lifestyle isn't really for him. Fair enough.

I would like to emphasize this point. I agree fully.

I am sad to hear that at SFC one needs to have a fancy car to be accepted as a member of the squad, and Steve was claiming that he didn't have one so he felt like an outsider.

It's true that being a star player would probably counter that element some, but it doesn't mean he is wrong.

(And for what it's worth, I enjoy a simple breakfast, too.)

De Ridder isn't terrible, he wasn't given a fair chance in my opinion

33 appearances in the champ season isn't a fair chance?

He was unbearably cack in the champ and Ali Dia bad in the prem, surprised it took him so long to accept that his wage would NEVER be paid by any club playing at his level and take the cancelation of it to go somewhere he actually had a chance of playing.

One of my favourite players in the last 2 years. That doesn't mean I think he's one of the best, just one of my favourites. Always had a soft spot for him. Did an okay job for us, okay not Premier League standard but was a good impact sub in The Championship. Hope he has a nice rest of his career.

I don't see what the issue is, the guy is making a fair point, the glamour style expected of Premiership players didn't suit his outlook and he was happy to take a big pay cut to return to his natural life style. what's wrong with that? We all know that football is living in a parallel universe, he's just saying so. Quite a wise guy in many ways. And certainly not anti Saints

Hands up who read the quotes.

Seems a perfectly reasonable point from a perfectly reasonable man, and not a 'pop' at anything in particular.

Yes but the thought occurs that he wouldn't be making these type of comments had it all gone well for him. It's also a very good PR story for his new club for him to announce that he much prefers things in Holland and is so very grateful to have signed for them.

"However, De Ridder surged down the right flank, turned Peter Ramage inside out and drove in a cross for do Prado to grab the opening goal."

A good point. It's just sad it didn't work out for either party. He made the choice to move and play so he's not bitter. Each to their own. Good luck Steve and thanks for that goal at Reading, sparking off one barmy celebration.

Try being less sh*t. Then you might have less to moan about.

He clearly isn't sh*t though is he. He just didn't do it at Saints. He was excellent in Holland before he came here and seems to be doing alright since he returned.

Why do some people feel the need to slag off a player who always put in maximum effort and chipped in with a few goals and assists. I don't see Billy Sharp volunteering to have his contract cancelled so he can go and play first team football. Or Forte, Martin, Hammond and Lee. I think that says more about Steve's character than anything. Same with Chaplow.

He didn't leave because of the lifestyle, he left because he didn't play, he didn't play because he wasn't good enough even in The Championship.

He would still be suffering earning 4x the salary and eating beans if he had he been anywhere near the first team.

Chaplow's contract was up in the summer : http://talksport.com/sports-news/football/premier-league/130320/southampton-star-richard-chaplow-set-summer-exit-194040

I'm pretty sure if he hadn't got injured he'd have just been released with the others. Instead, my guess is we put him on a monthly contract until he was able to prove his fitness/join another club and then mutually cancelled it 11 days later http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23276859 just before he signed for Millwall. So basically, if anything, Chaplow hung on for 11 days more than he should have got, and he definitely didn't leave out of some kind of desire to play, his contract had basically expired.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to play. Can't say I agree with his financial choices though.

Frustrating player. Like a really loud fart without a smell.

Surely this depends on the originator of said fart.

If it's yourself, you'll feel a sense of pride.

If it's anyone else, it smells f**king disgusting.

Correction, he was good in a HIGHLIGHTS PACKAGE someone put together of his time in Holland.

I always thought the opposite. He was like a fart which' date=' just when pride was at hand, you realise you'd followed through.[/quote']

If only he followed through one of those mazy runs of his with a cross. Steve De Ridder's career in English football in a nutshell:

THIS GUY IS AMAZING! LOOK AT THESE GOALS ON YOUTUBE!

He takes on one, he takes on two, he takes on... No he lost it.

De Ridder with a great goal against Reading!

STEEEEVE! LOL!

He has a chance to score, he cuts inside... The defender gets it away.

DE RIDDER CAN PLAY HIM THROUGH BUT NO! HE TAKES THE SHOT AND MISSES!

Steve De Ridder has joined Bolton on loan.

(Voice of a Bolton fan) What the fook did yer pay all the mooneh for? He's crap!

I don't like it here, waaa, it's so decadent, waaa.
