I'm not old enough to remember him playing, but his face and voice were certainly a part of my youth watching sport on the box.

 

Always seemed a gentleman.

He was called in to commentate on the classic Barbarians v all Blacks match in 1973 as Bill McLaren had been taken ill. I know the words of "the try" off by heart.

Sport on 4 (Radio 4) on Saturday mornings in the 70s and 80s was compulsory listening. He was also one of the original captains on Question of Sport.
