Unhealthy obsession with Southampton Football Club

I have an unhealthy obsession with Southampton football club. I fritter away vast amounts of time reading news articles, reading this website, listening to and watching games. In the past I frittered away money as well as time, but thankfully not any longer. I am proud to admit that I don't spend a penny on the football club. I don't go to games, I don't buy merchandise, I haven't signed up to Saints player and I don't buy sky TV. To me, following Southampton football club is like a shameful habit that I just can't get rid of. I wish the whole ****ing thing was behind a paywall.

I'm a 30 year old bloke, FFS! I was too old for this shit 20 years ago.

Footballers are grotesque, the whole football circus is grotesque!

National pride, pride in the city, taking pride in the useless physical achievements of people I don't personally know is about as pathetic as it is possible to be. To me it indicates stupidity and passivity. I find myself succumbing to these feeling from time to time despite this knowledge and it is always an embarrassment to me. I don't often pick up on a sense of embarrassment from you people though. Misplaced embarrassment about hashtags, foam hands and the clubs transfer policy, yes, but I rarely pick up on an embarrassment over the choices you people have made in your lives that has resulted in your degeneration into football fans.

Reading this forum is probably my worst vice. I spend quite alot of time lurking here, yet I have so little respect for the vast majority of you. I cannot believe the number of idiotic posts I have read over the years. I find it difficult to explain why I come here, as said it is kind of an addiction. 1) I guess its because it's free and its about Southampton football club 2) I guess it is because I don't meet that many uneducated/working class/stupid/average British people anymore and I am interested to know what it is that you think about. Your thoughts are always thoroughly disappointing to me but I suppose I get to feel a smug sense of superiority until the guilt and shame kicks in.

Some of you are young and can be forgiven for now, but the older ones should take a long look at yourselves.

Would anyone else like to share their thoughts on the topic of unhealthy obsessions with Southampton football club?

Not sure of your motives in posting this but I have a degree of sympathy with your view.

Now and then I have to justify to myself why I spend a good deal of time and money watching prima donnas fail to live up to my expectation

I blame my old Dad who got me interested in the game as a youngster and, growing up, all I looked forward to was kicking a ball around and going to the Dell once a fortnight.

Many of my long standing friends are associated with the game in some way and, in business, it has often helped develop relationships with people.

Following Saints has probably given me more negative feelings than positives but, boy, do the occasional good times make up for it.

The past few years have been comparatively good times but I know somewhere in the not too far in the future my allegiance will be tested

However I am too much an ingrained Saint to give up the obsession

I think many people will be able to relate to your post CWAB. I spend too much time on here, reading news reports etc as you say you do, but thankfully it doesn't dominate my life as it does for someone like Turkish for example, who clearly has nothing else in his life but post on here. When you get to his level, that's when you should start worrying.

For me, most of my days are spent doing things I love in an incredible place but when I am sitting down and not working and have an internet connection I'll come on here.

Some people like to collect the stamp, some like to make the gym, some like to hunt the animal and rip apart with wild dogs... and others like to follow Southampton football club.

I chose my last toothbrush based on it being Red and White, and tend to buy Red and White striped toothpaste aswell!!

However I don't think I own any Red Clothes, never had a Replica shirt and don't have any SFC tattoos!!

But, I do spend way too much of my spare time checking on here, and other sites for any news about SFC, and have a Saints Coffee/Tea at work and at home and a SFC sticker in my car.

Obsession? - No.

Pastime / Hobby which I devote quite a lot of my spare time to - probably.

You come here so infrequently as you are a 30 year old man so rich you wont part with a £5, good wum post though, probably the best ever written wind up from a Shirley Warrren bedsit.

You probably think of yourself as Christian Bale from American Physcho, I think you of Dwayne Dibley or David Brent.

Muchly xxxx

When you get to his level, that's when you should start worrying.

The very fact that you think in these terms; using trashy celebrities and characters from the TV as your points of reference, puts you firmly in the uneducated/working class/stupid/average/disappointing British category of person.

Don't pretend that you don't crave the same sense of superior smugness. I would guess half the reason you've set up your own blog is to reach out to a wider less disappointing audience. Football fans are disappointing the world over though, so to increase your satisfaction I would recommend that you move away from the topic of football.

Not sure why this topic has been moved to the muppet show, if anything it should have been moved to the main board. Poor moderation.

I thought this thread looked boring from the title. I thought it would be about MLG's sticker collection or how many replica shirts the9 has but it was a pleasant surprise. A great read Banjo chicken, we all feel your pain. This is like the last bit of the vice to shake off. It is like when heroin addicts stop skagging up but instead smoke non stop and drink super tenants. You think, well at least they are off the skag. You are off the main skag and have stopped spunking money on Guly but this is your sneaky little splee now and again.

True dat but that does not stop you being a bellend on a wind up La who lives in a Shirley Warren bedsit, you remind (I have never watched this as it repulses me and so does self gratification violent movies) of that short fat bloke who stars in human centipede 2.

Your banter is either **** hot or gash, I'm not too sure which but for a bellend with Millions you sure are slumming it with us.

is CWAB not really TCWAB but dropped his first name?

Just asking as it sounds like CWAB has an unhealthy obsession with SFC because he is really a skate supporter.spending time on here working out from the Pompey takeover thread what is actually happening.

I do, I man love you everynight in my electric dreams, just like "tokes" does to Bearsy.

We do to each other Barry - each other. And it is not just bear, spudgun is involved too, golfing phil after big games, even Glasgow has partaken on Scottish bank holidays. I think you are just a little bit green eyed about not being invited.

I'm deeply conflicted.

I'm not sure what the correct response is.

I want to praise Chicken With A Banjo for his post, but in doing so I immediately fall into one (or likely more than one) of the distressingly accurate categories of losers that he has outlined.

CWAB?

Chicken Using Nine Trumpets more like.

I understand football (and would henceforth describe it) as 'task based theatre' (despite the somewhat effeminate qualities of the term). For me; Football comes under the same category as going to a theatre to see performance art, listening to music or watching a movie. Despite your obvious attempt to create a reaction by making derogatory remarks regarding the individuals who use this site (which in-turn is probably, but not necessarily, the result of low self-esteem, stemming from negative body image or a difficult relationship with one or both parents on your parents.)

I would suggest that your original post simply acts to expose your uneducated and uncultured understanding of the relationship between sociological and artistic movements. Your point of view is both narrow minded and uninformed, not to mention the hypocrisy in addressing passivity through the means of the transcendental hyper-reality of an online forum.

I can't help but like this Chicken with a BJ character, for all that he only comes on here to mug us off. He's like an introspective grey crab, or a reticent Turkish.

I would be pleased to see him post more, if only so i can enlist The9 to mug off his grandmas.

Well he's original. It's a bit like seeing one of Bill Hicks' angrier performances where he is rude to the audience.

I honestly didn't start this thread with the expectation that any of you people would perform for me but I have to say Bananaman, even with the somewhat uncalled sleights you threw in there, that was adorable. I wish I could give you a rosette. How about I put you in a special category all on your own as a reward? You can be in the category of disproportionately indignant fans of Southampton task based theatre club.

You're right of course, balletomanes and football fans are basically one and the same and I am very sorry that I did not make the extreme relevance of this clear at the beginning of this discussion.

True dat

I'm sorry to hear that. I wish there was something I could do.
