As said on the post match thread

usually refs get it when an expected result does not fall the way a set of fans want

but he was terrible today

the free kick he gave larsson at the end was identical to the one he never gave in favour of gaston about 1 min before

just utterly inconsistent throughout.

was very poor for both teams IMO

The fundamental problem with referees in the Premier is that they are nowhere near fit enough .

If referees are to be short overweight middle aged gentlemen who leave their pipe and slippers in the dressing room whilst handling the game, then would it be a solution to have one in each half?

This guy was nowhere near the game at any point and missed all the key incidents, maybe fortunately for Osvaldo, otherwise he would have gone.

A word for the linesman in front of the Itchen stand. Totally and utterly incompetent. The fat **** was consistently behind the play and constantly missed fouls and gave throw ins the wrong way. The worst lino i've ever seen at St Mary's. Total and utter ****!

He was terrible, for both sides, that is a sign of a bad referee. Can remember 3 or 4 free kicks we were given, which just weren't fouls.

Was the lino's call correct for the disallowed goal?

I couldn't tell. Normally I look out for these things but he didn't look offside to me at the time. I expect it will be proved correct later.

Hi Phil, was that shown on the channel out there? Two other instances in he first half I would want to see again, when Adam was bundled over on the six yard box when about to shoot, and Fonte being pulled back from the JWP free kick that went just past the far post?

Very marginal. Rodriguez was in front of the last defender by a couple of nose hairs, but lino could have easily given the attacker benefit of the doubt.

Not seen it myself, but my vie (from Chapel) it seemed tight, although I appreciate, I may as well have been sat in Debenhams to give an accurate thought - who has seen it on tv? Perhaps I'll go to the match thread, I'll see what is said there. COYR.

From what I saw on the stream, J Rod's legs were onside but because he was charging forward his body wasn't - but surely it's the positioning of his feet that count??

he was offside

I believe it's any scoring part of the body, ie anything but arms. Head/shoulders count in offside (for both defender and attacker mind).

Looked very close to me, with replays. I'd have called it level myself, but there's been clearer onsides flagged wrongly that that one, for sure.

The body check on Gaston sums him up for me, right in front of him & he waved play on.

Plenty of other controversial incidents poor performance by Mason today.

he gave a foul not long after to sunderland for the exact same thing. in almost the exact same position on the pitch (for sunderland)

Agreed, probably slightly biased opinion & Sunderland could probably point to some incidents that went against them.

But for me all the major ones went their way today. I guess another day it will go our way.

totally agree, only thing he was consistent about was being poor

No, everything except the arms.

Lee Mason has always been a crap ref in my opinion and today he was his normal self !

The whole match is on Sky at 8pm, so I will judge his performance in more detail then !

Worst kind of referee performance due to the inconsistency.

Two similar situations are not judged the same which makes the players dont know what´s allowed or not.

His head was in front of their last defender, so think he got that right. But seen them given.

And btw.....what the f*** was that calling over Lallana when he talked to Lambert necessary for??

Ridicolous stunt to try to show he´s in command of the game...

well on leaving the ground the fact that Sunderland fans were talking about the ref as well sums it up for me, he was awful, normal service from him though

The blogger on "emirates stadium" (Walter Broakx?) "Untold Arsenal" who did a breakdown of how good or bad Refs were ingiving benefits to Saints had one category entitled, "Worse than bad." Unsurprisingly, perhaps, who is sat in that group? Lee Mason, if I remember.

I don't think he got a single call right today, which is impressive.

I have seen plenty of people sacked for a lot less, look at Phil Bardsley....

Not giving the foul against Ramirez near the end when he was totally bodychecked was just bizarre.

Totally agree with you.

At the time I thought a bad foul and a booking...

Seeing the phots in the gallery confirms how close the ref was.. and how Lee Mason obviously does not understand the concept of a blatant body check on Ramirez being illegal under any set of rules.

JRod offside was unlucky but it was the wrong decision. Also the ball to him from Lambert & the way Jrod took it were exquisite.

O'Shea should NEVER had stayed on the pitch, he rugby tackled Lallana - started by a HUGE pull on his shirt then bundled him over - best view was from behind the goal

Yes it was a push on Fonte but those are often not given, then O Shea tried to take Osvaldo's head off - which caused him to lose the plot & get booked.

And the Bodycheck on Gaston - The tater said HOW is that NOT a foul - even he was incredulous
