spyinthesky Posted 25 August, 2013 Share Posted 25 August, 2013 Osvaldo will undoubtedly cause problems during his time here and can't see him lasting 4 years that's for sure However he certainly has talent and hopefully this can be harnessed to ensure his contribution in terms of goals and team effort will outweigh his sendings off/suspensions and possible histrionics
Supersubpuckett Posted 25 August, 2013 Share Posted 25 August, 2013 if he does well then i think he'll move to a bigger club next season. watching the intro piece on saints player he seemed very sheepish holding up his saints shirt and then gave all the standard answers in his press conference. i think MP will have to work hard to genuinely integrate him into the squad. i hope he does. I really like what he brings to the table, other than the petulance and histrionics, and I agree with the underlined bit. However, what we've built here is a very strong commitment to the team ethic, with a big emphasis on what's best described by that old chestnut "There's no 'I' in team." Wanyama slotted right into it, but it could take quite a while for NP to integrate Osvaldo into the squad if Dani is slow to recognize that he also has to integrate himself into the squad and the self-discipline that's a big part of it. This isn't a case of the squad building itself around Osvaldo. Having said that, I don't think it helped Osvaldo to have Rodriguez on the pitch, because that took away a lot of the space that he likes to attack. Toon Saint Posted 25 August, 2013 Share Posted 25 August, 2013 I think he will settle ok. Yes, he has a temper and pretty convinced that he will get sent off once or twice this season, but wouldn't worry about him thinking he is better than the current squad. Apart from a two-year spell at Roma, he's not been playing with world-class players his entire career. To be honest, think he will enjoy being the 'top dog' here. We've got the whole Argentine-Italian thing covered with Poch and Cortese, plus a reasonable South American contingent in the squad now. Judging from her twitter posts his girlfriend seems to be enjoying Southampton, and he's obviously been looking for properties for a while. Don't know why he marched down the tunnel after the game (wasn't there), but probably hasn't forged that same bond with the rest of the players yet. That said, nice picture of him and Cork sharing a moment on the touchline.

This. I think he's clearly just here for the season, putting himself in the shop window and getting plenty of first team action to maximise his chances of going to the world cup. Smart move for him, too, cos he's playing in a team that's set up to supplying him with more goal scoring opportunities than most. Should be a mutually beneficial arrangement, and we shouldn't suffer on the pitch too much after he's left, as our youngsters are improving all the time and will learn from him, plus if it all works out, we'll make a profit and will be a top 10 team more able to attract another international level striker to take his place. It may well turn out to be the case, but what makes you say it is clearly indicated?? Surely not supersubpucket's assertion that he looked "sheepish" when holding up his Saints shirt

georgeweahscousin Posted 26 August, 2013 Share Posted 26 August, 2013 Obviously confident in himself. As shown in the matchday uncovered vid, he had a vest with a message printed on the back under his shirt so was backing himself to score!
Saint Billy Posted 26 August, 2013 Share Posted 26 August, 2013 Like the fact that he seems to bring out the best in Gaston. Dr Who? Posted 26 August, 2013 Share Posted 26 August, 2013 Think he is class, but he will get a few red cards and in turn will cost us games. Hoping that we get him under control. A couple of goals may calm him, but I doubt it. Class yes, but can see him being a liability. I am the only one who thought that he could unbalance the squad and team togetherness, with his high wages and star player label.

Yep, I have the same concern but we do need that sort of player to make a difference and compete at the highest level. The only answer is good and clever man management on behalf of MP. the saint in winchester Posted 26 August, 2013 Share Posted 26 August, 2013 He will be different class once he settles. Such an intelligent player and his movement was the reason we started getting more opportunities in the second half. I think we have to accept though that he is going to pick up his fair share of red and yellow cards. Surprised to see him walk straight off at the end given it was his debut. I wouldn't accept it if a player is available for 1 game in 4. I don't care how good he could be if he is regularly unavailable. Sell him on this week. At least, MoPo should fine him 2 weeks wages for every red card, 1 week for every yellow. Otherwise this won't make economic sense.

Answer : No. I wasn't happy that we brought him in, having read his backstory and feel he will be disruptive. Ship out. Find someone young and keen to succeed but with some humility. Find someone young and keen to succeed but with some humility. So much for giving a new player some time to prove his worth. 45 mins should be enough these days though, eh? Care to explain how we ship out a signing we only just made? And who would you recommend coming in to replace him? (I keep reading - young/hungry to succeed - but who is that? I never see any names attributed with that comment.) Which stories have you read, and have you read both sides? Would be interested to read your responses as to what's caused you to make a snap judgement such as this.
offix Posted 26 August, 2013 Share Posted 26 August, 2013 we spent way too much money on a player with a serious temper problem, and who will be suspended for more matches than the number of games he will be available for. bad purchase.

colehillsaint Posted 26 August, 2013 Share Posted 26 August, 2013 I don't understand the mentality sometimes. I go to football to be entertained really. I honestly doubt that we are ever going to be champions of Europe, but at least these days we seem to be capable of putting out a really entertaining football team. Osvaldo and his effect on Gaston looked like more fun than you could shake a stick at and I don't see MP letting him run riot in the long term. That's me done for another 4 months! dan abnormal Posted 26 August, 2013 Share Posted 26 August, 2013 MP wouldn't have signed him if he thought Dani would disrupt team spirit etc. He knows exactly what he's getting with him. Dont think MP would want to sign a disruptive influence as MP seems to really value a strong team spirit.

Excellent work Sir. I too am looking forward to the moments of madness, excitement and soccerball genius our new signings will inevitably bring. I'm also thinking any interaction between Boruc and Osvaldo has eye-watering comedy potential. All this and we might well have some pwoper legends in the making too!! doggface Posted 26 August, 2013 Share Posted 26 August, 2013 Osvaldo is a quality player. However he really should have been sent off on Saturday. 1st booking was totally needless & petulant. 2nd challenge was a little rash and dumb on a yellow. Still none the wiser as to how rickie & osvaldo will play together. Hopefully it will click & if it does.... Exciting times.
david in sweden Posted 26 August, 2013 Share Posted 26 August, 2013 Looked absolute class when on. Passion Silky touch Strong World class talent! all those things sound good, but it's hard to judge on the basis of 49 minutes in his first game. For a fee of £15 million, I'd like to see; an Osvaldo who can score goals - (and perhaps a few more than even Rickie Lambert will get this season). A little more " unselfish passing " to other players.....but most of all.... a run of games where he can finish a game without a yellow card to his name - and definitely not a red, either. "Prima Donna " (or whatever).....having to live up to a £15 million reputation... means becoming a role model ...and not a liability. Otherwise ...I like the look of the guy's style. Lord Duckhunter Posted 27 August, 2013 Share Posted 27 August, 2013 Love the one eyed assessments of the new guy. Why do some football supporters have to resort to hyperbole when describing their own players? If I was a neutral I'd say he did ok, nothing special but ok. He may turn out to be a good player, and he certainly did ok for a first run out with new team mates, but id stop short of calling that half "world class". jasonb Posted 27 August, 2013 Share Posted 27 August, 2013 I thought he looked great in his first 45 mins for the club considering he's only been with the squad 5 minutes. His movement and technique are clearly on a higher level to most of our squad. Those little chipped balls are great and add another dimension to our attacks.. Someone able to find others accurately in space can't be under estimated. Yes he looks lively and passionate but I like that bit of aggression. We need someone who is a bit of a handful sometimes. My only fear is that based off that performance alone, other managers will target him as a player to wind up in an attempt to get him carded. He could end up a marked man in more was than one. Stoozer Posted 27 August, 2013 Share Posted 27 August, 2013 I'm enjoying being a Saints fan. I think Osvaldo, maybe being a bit if a loose cannon, will add a little more excitement, frustration and fun. I'd rather be walking out of SMS having a jovial convo with my mates about this than another resigned chat about survival. We'll see a better Gaston too. Come on fellas (and ladies), embrace it and enjoy!
Bananaman Posted 27 August, 2013 Share Posted 27 August, 2013 cant be bothered to read the completely unjustified Osvaldo bashing but just bear in mind the following.. A) he won us the free kick that lead to the goal B) if J-Rod didnt head the ball like a 4 year old girl he would have had an assist C) It is not outrageous to say that Fonte's goal was only possible because Osvaldo is all over Fonte's markers shirt.. that is to say that Osvaldo played dirty, pulled don the man in front of him creating the space for Fonte to win the head and as such, the goal... Osvaldo is the type of player (along with the very physical Wanyama) that we have been lacking.. Lambert, J-rod and Lallana are good players but Osvaldo is the next level, a match winner at the highest level.
