Lallana's Left Peg Posted 27 August, 2013 Share Posted 27 August, 2013 Just back from the game. A few things to note: 1. Mayuka is not a lone striker. Doesn't seem to anticipate things too well, doesn't get involved enough, just doesn't carry himself like someone who can play that role. He was shifted out to the right at HT with Rodriguez playing up top and we were miles better. The midfielders and defence had a target they trusted and someone who had better movement. Mayuka also seemed more interested when he could receive the ball in more space. 2. It wasn't clicking in the final third in the first half. Very neat at the back and in midfield, but not enough happening in the final third. Ramirez was very disappointing. On one hand he wasn't being given the ball in spaces he demanded it, but on the other his general demeanour and play when he had the ball was not good enough. Hustled off the ball too easily, dwelling on it too much, and some really bad decision making. I sincerely hope he finds something in Osvaldo has his compatibility with the rest of the group isn't there at the moment, regardless of the talent. His goal was classy though, to be fair. And he was clearly relieved to score. 3. The defence were good but O'Grady won far more than his fair share of flicks. Fox was very good as well. 4. Davis and Cork were neat, but Davis was more efficient moving forward with the ball - our man of the match for me. 5. Isgrove was a little disappointing, I think he was keen to impress but he looked a little nervous and at times you could see some players reminding him of positions to be on based on stuff they have worked on in training. More to come from him. 6. All the goals were well taken, and it was brilliant to see Rowe, Reed, and Sinclair come on. The game had opened up by then (Barnsley kept throwing strikers on) so there was more space to work but Rowe was very lively and could (perhaps even should) have scored twice. Reed was great - slipped into the midfield like he had played there for 10 years and also made runs forward and passed the ball forward very well - it is easy to be a crab playing in front of the back four but he was keen to move us up the pitch while retaining the ball. Sinclair did not have much time on the pitch but his movement was efficient. It was a very efficient performance in which we were always in control. Barnsley didn't have much to offer and it was nice to get five goals. It didn't click in the final third until they were chasing the game in the second half but I would concede that may well be due to a combination that have not played together before. Above all hopefully the game will be known for another three promising debuts for players who will go on to significantly contribute to the first team in the years to come. maysie Posted 27 August, 2013 Share Posted 27 August, 2013 Just shown the Sunderland goals for the second time in 15 minutes. Now they are 'explaining' the Yeovil game again without any actual footage. Have they not got the rights to show half these games or are they just trying to wind me up? Just want to keep all us mugs tuned in.

Saints boy in Leeds Posted 27 August, 2013 Share Posted 27 August, 2013 Comfortable win, miles better than Barnsley and a win was never really in doubt. Rodriguez was man of the match for me, lead the line very well and a great finish, think it was him who hit the post too. Great goal at the end from Ramirez, he played well In patches but again didnt really do enough against a poor team and should have buried his chance in the early minutes. I though Mayuka was poor in the first half but improved in the second. Rowe was lively when he came on and unlucky not score, Reid looked quality, good on the ball fitted in straight away and looks to have a bit about it. All in all a good night for saints, 5 goals and a good win and a good run out for the fringe players and a rare 90 minutes for Ramirez which was good to see. This, spot on mate. Agree with Gaston although looked a lot more interested 2nd half.

mcbendy Posted 27 August, 2013 Share Posted 27 August, 2013 Hard to tell for sure due to low res video but from what I can see Davis had a hand is a few of those goals. Watching him on a live stream in pres-season I was impressed too.
DuncanRG Posted 27 August, 2013 Share Posted 27 August, 2013 Thanks for this. None of this particularly surprises me, particularly regarding Mayuka. If he ever breaks into the first team it would be in Rodriguez's role rather than as the focal point, that much is obvious.
SuperMikey Posted 27 August, 2013 Share Posted 27 August, 2013 Jesus Perez was interviewed after the game and was asked about Mayuka being shifted out to the right, and whether that was his best position. He basically said he's better when he's on the ball more, although he said "we don't play in positions, we play from positions" which illustrates the fluidity that we're trying to bring to our play. Personally I think Mayuka is a very good out wide, he's showed his chops in a few games there last year and think we should be using him there more often. Very dangerous against West Ham (away) and Spurs (home) cutting in from the right with his pace. Wish I had gone to this game now, had to work instead

lloydie Posted 28 August, 2013 Share Posted 28 August, 2013 SSN are showing goals from some of the games (have only done Reading so far). Don't know if anyone else was getting annoyed at how often they kept showing the Bristol City - Palace highlights before any others, ad infinitum. It wasnt even THAT much of a shock, Palace and Holloway are pretty dire.

Fitzhugh Fella Posted 28 August, 2013 Share Posted 28 August, 2013 That's a long way to go for an evening away match but it was good to see a comfortable win and 5 goals, 4 of which were nicely taken. Surprised no Do Prado - he may be injured and no sign of Hooiveld either. V disappointed in Mayuka, I have to say. Until his goal he just did not get into the game Isgrove only came to life in the 2nd H when he went wide left. Ramirez so much skill and composure but so frustrating. His free kicks last night were shocking. Oakwell was just how I imagined it, corrugated fences, red bricked walls and old fashioned corner steel floodlights that looked like they had been in situ since Michael Parkinson was a nipper. Lot of praise was given (by Solent) to MP last night for not panicking in 1st half when he played Mayuka alone up front and then changing things around at HT to very good effect switching Isgrove to left dropping Mayuka to right & JRod up front

yorkie Posted 28 August, 2013 Share Posted 28 August, 2013 Just read this page but for what it's worth here's my take: Ramirez lacks composure in front of goal - that miss early doors was a shocker for a player of his ability. Agree with Duncan his free kicks were truly abysmal but a quality run and finish on 92-mins. Mayuka is not a target man - I thought his redeeming feature was pace. Well I know he was always offside in previous games - but either our midfield were so intent on keeping possession in the 1st half and he didn't run the channels or he was told not to? Kelvin had a quiet night but even then could keep a clean sheet - I blame Fox! Only joking he was one of the better players on the pitch - but I seem to recall 2-defenders backing off and ltting the Barnsley lad shoot - mind you it was a good strike. All the youngsters did themselves proud - nice to see Corky back, with Clyne and Yoshida. Jay Rod looks like a man on a mission - I can't see him being dropped or left out. He has to be the future! Nice touch at the end getting rid of the shirts - but it' was like watching another team! Traditionalist me still like striped red & white shirts and yellow away kits. Black is just all wrong! Good following for a Tuesday night - acoustics very good in a very empty stand. Made the Saints fans sound like 10-times as many!
david in sweden Posted 28 August, 2013 Share Posted 28 August, 2013 Yes he was, but his translator wasn't - true story. Perez is essentially MP's assistant, and as the team we put out was pretty much our " reserve strength " then perhaps he was an obvious person to run the show, and MP could assess them objectively without having to think about changes, tactics, etc. Just about everyone out there last night was " second-choice " in the current scene, so they may not have just been playing for a place on the bench, but something more important - their future with SFC. Saint Charlie Posted 28 August, 2013 Share Posted 28 August, 2013 A couple of things. Firstly, the black kit is our best away one for ages. Secondly, Ramirez seems to be composed in front of goal for a midfielder (finish tonight, QPR and WH home last season) and also is capable of some excellent assists. Instead of focusing on what he doesn't do well why don't we look at the positives because once he finds a little more consistency we have a cracking player on our hands. Very odd, jumping around and dancing when their goal music came on, it was pretty embarrassing Saints fans are unique in this way - they support Saints 1st (sure) but also LOVE their football and appreciate good skills + goals. A number of our fans regularly watch Championship footy + League 1 and 2 and a lot of overseas games. I know a lot of Saints fans (me included) that have followed Stephen Dawson's career since his early days at Mansfield Town and Bury and would have been delighted to see him score a world class goal last night.
