Gaston Watch

Thought he played very well after he came on today. Was the hub of all our attacking play and linked well with Osvaldo. Hope they both start against Norwich next week. I think we should have enough to beat Barnsley without either.

I thought he played pretty well too - but I didn't see any of this "linking with Osvaldo" going on.

There was one particularly good ne where he was looking one way and reverse passed which put Osvaldo through. I think Mr O will thrive when they ne'er stand each others game a little better.

I remember that - although to describe it as "put Osvaldo though" is stretching it a bit. The pass found Osvaldo, but he was still about 10 yards outside the box with the entire Sunderland defence still in front of him.

We must be thinking about separate instances, because the one I recall was played inside the box and the ball ran through to the keeper.

Must be - but at the risk of sounding pedantic, how is a ball that runs through to the keeper classed as putting someone through? Nevermind......

Always looks skillful, but to me still seems to lack confidence - at times looks like a boy playing with older kids - is better skillfully, but often looks upset as he gets knowckjd around a bit and drops his head a bit when his passes dont come off. Think he could be superb, but is struggling a bit to adjust to the pace. He needs games - full games and his confidence should improve. I like his fluidity, and can see why w bought him, but he needs to deliver consistently, and that will only come if he can adjust and gain that elusive swagger that was clear in Osvaldo today.

Thought he looked class above today!

Enjoyed the fact that he was willing to run at them, we didn't have that until he came on the pitch.

I said the same after the WBA game, but he seems to have bulked up a bit -certainly isn't being knocked off the ball as much as he was last year.

It looked to my eye a stone wall foul on him just on the edge of the area that wasn't given. Also his little chip forward for Osvaldo was just a touch ahead of him but I think Osvaldo will bring out the best in Gaston. Really looking forward to seeing those two together when in full flow.

This was the most shocking decision of the match. He was clearly taken out, right in front of the ref.

Nope not even close to being the first time...

Well shows how much I can remember from last season haha. It does seem to be a rarity though. Really hope he does well this season and gets a good run in the side.

Wasn't in the game at all in the first half tonight, but same alive a little more when he moved to the centre of the 3 in the 2nd. Didn't see his goal (I left to beat the traffic after Davis put the penalty away).

He played some neat stuff but he still gets harassed off the ball too easily. He needs to be more determined to get past his man instead of just waiting to get fouled. Overall he was effective tonight, but let's remember this Barnsley team had leaked 12 goals in 3 games prior to today.

Or more likely, it highlights that he was away in the summer and missed our pre-season friendlies, so needs the match practice, same as Yoshida.

Nice to have a chance to knock him every 5 minutes though isn't it.

Agree Adrian and tbh was good in sat and was good tonight so he's making a start. The goal was classy.

Lols at some of the posts.

Last night in the post match wrap-up Merry Davington didn't know what to cream his pants over first.

Was it to be the way that Ramirez stepped up to the plate in the second half and took leadership?

Or the "Kids"

Gaston missed not only the pre-season games but also all of the in-jokes, banter, fire-walking and of course VW's karaoke moment.

It was always going to take him (and Maya) time to get up to the same wavelength the rest of the guys are on.

The GREAT news for us is that he is now getting back to where he should be AND we have had an unbeaten start to the season while he was getting there.

With the performance by our back up players (admittedly against a poor Championship team) AND the emergence of our Yoof, it really is Onwards & Upwards at the moment

As posted on match thread: Ramirez seems to be composed in front of goal for a midfielder (finish tonight, QPR and WH home last season) and also is capable of some excellent assists. Instead of focusing on what he doesn't do well why don't we look at the positives because once he finds a little more consistency we have a cracking player on our hands.

But he's got no pace, doesnt run around load, cant tackle, doesn't show PASSION, couldn't fit into a 4-4-2 effectively. How do you expect him to be a success in England?

:)

Great comment last night on Solent about our formation.

Our players do not play IN a position

Our players play FROM a position

Now, all we need to do is all take a UEFA coaching badge so we can truly understand that.

THEN we can post :)
