Osvaldo pulled back the defender that was challenging Fonte for the equalising header. He practically tore his shirt off... I missed that on the TV and the ref and lino did too obviously.

The foul on Ramirez on the edge of the box (would have been a 2nd yellow and sending off) looked blatant on the TV and the photos of this incident are equally damning.

Got to be pleased with that performance, our passing in the early stages was exceptional and if it wasn't for a poor run of finishing then we would have won the game.

I'd have been happier with that sort of performance and 1-1 than a sh1t performance and scraping a 1-0 through an own goal. We've got a lot to look forward to this season.

Strange day.

We had 20 @dubaisaints in the pub, worryingly including THREE new shirts. Didn't feel as drawn in and engaged in the game as last week, no idea why.

SRL put in some lovely passes, OK so JRod could be interpreted as being offside, but SRL's ball into him was sublime, AND JRod took the chance really well. Stop going all Guly on him, once he gets his first he'll be away.

REALLY surprised to see Morgan go off at HT, but boy did that work out. Perhaps we now see a tweak to our tactics for home games of just the one DM.

If we were Man Ure playing that at OT we'd have had 3 penalties & O'Shea would have been sent off long before someone clouted him. The rugby tackle on AL was just awful.

Not surprised Osvaldo lost the plot, think most of us would have done if someone had tried to rip our head off our shoulders, hopefully he will learn from that.

Where are all the Gaston haters now? Made a huge difference when he came on, his direct runs cause panic AND it seems he has learnt to fall over "less theatrically" when he gets clattered, although that Bodycheck should be shown on 60 inch TV screens non stop in the Ref's room whenever that moron Ref comes back to SMS. Dreadful decision.

Oh and our pet skate turned up to watch - Again. We learnt a bit more about him as well. He's been on his hols here (bless) he is also TCWTB's best buddy ("he's really a nice guy" ROFL) and is the Drum banger  who proudly got thrown out at the Bompey Cup game. To cap it all "actually you lot played good football and enjoyed the games these last two weeks" so another convert then. Unfortunately couldn't get either of the girls in new shirts to swap them with him.

Also, in a similar vein, our Twittermeister's best mates come down to many games with him (no doubt checking out the bountiful chicks in Bar Nasti) their comment? Really starting to enjoy watching your lot play football, what time is KO next week?

JWP MOTM by a mile, but I had SRL in a distant second as he contributed to many build ups yet still managed to get into the box & get on the end of chances. On another day he could have had a hat trick.

1 - What I thought of the Game.

From what I managed to see of it of it (see below) I thought we utterly bossed this game and probably deserved to take all the points in truth. But due to a (unacceptable) defensive mix-up at a early corner we went behind and subsequent dogged defending by Sunderland meant we didn't carve out nearly enough clear cut chances in the first half, indeed our play was starting to resemble a dismal Allardyce-like 'long ball' style at times. Nevertheless the quality of our football improved dramatically in the second half and we really can be a impressive and highly entertaining sight to see at times - as we should be given the obvious quality of the squad we have now assembled. I'll happily take 4 points from just two games.

For me Victor Wanyama and JWP stood out as being particularly impressive and 'Danny' Osvaldo looks to have more about him than any of our other strikers. Calum Chambers did well enough, but is surely is destined to lose his place once Clyne returns to full fitness. As for the opposition, Sunderland are obviously a hurriedly assembled team that are still in a state of transition. Early days of course, but they need to 'gel' quickly because (on this evidence) they look pretty limited. Methinks De Canio may have a job on his hands keeping them up this season.

2 - Chapel End Charlie's adventures in the first aid room.

As is my habit I spend the half time break chatting with my mate down behind the Chapel goal. Unfortunately I made the classic mistake of taking my eye off the substitutes half time shooting practice for a second and a powerful (but typically wayward) Jack Cork effort caught me right in the face! This type of thing is very funny of course - but only when it happens to somebody else.

With copious amounts of 'claret' pouring from my battered nose I was soon dispatched to the medical room where I received the prompt and undivided attention of four (very conscientious) St John's Ambulance staff. I'm happy to report my nose stopped bleeding after a just few minutes, filling out the inevitable accident paperwork however delayed my return by considerably longer. I hope you will be pleased to read that at least I was back in my seat in time to see Fonte's late equaliser.

I really must learn to duck next time ...

Ha ha, happened to me when a Wolves playing Andy Gray shot was just wide of the post at the Dell in the 80's. I was stood front row of Milton end, hands in pockets, ball straight in the face. Was only about 11yrs old, didn't half smart.

"Shaw apparently aggravated the knee injury he picked up against Real Sociedad, but think he was taken off as more of a precaution." from Post 200

I saw it live on sky and could clearly hear the crunch of bone on bone when he had the collision.

He will be fine with a week off. To think though, that JWP and Osvaldo got the same punishment as Gardner did for that challenge is just bizarre.

Just realised that it took us 7 games to get to 4 pts last year (2nd week of October) and it then took us a further month to move off of 4!

Getting that first win out of the way from the WBA game will help us a lot...otherwise it just hangs over you.

Could, and probably should, have won given our possession, but just didn't really get going. A point won on that basis. JWP really came of age yesterday - MoM by a country mile.

Better things to come once Osvaldo has bedded in - he will help improve Ramirez too.

Anybody see what happened to the guy outside Varsity after the match? Walked past at about 5.30 and he was on the pavement being looked over by paramedics, his face wasn't in a great way.....looked like a Sunderland fan but I could be wrong.

Just a few thoughts,

Always difficult going down 1-0 early on, then having to face a team that is content with trying to defend that one goal lead at all costs. I remember thinking Sunderland seemed quite negative.

Thought James Ward-Prowse was class, Callum Chambers also impressed again... Lallana was much better yesterday. Our academy has to be one of the best in the country.

Great through ball by Lambert and great finish by Rodriguez for the offside goal. Lovren and Wanyama again looked solid.

Please Fonte got the goal, loved his celebration - Scoring in the Premier League when you signed for the club in League One must be great.

Ramirez looked good when he came on, and Osvaldo is certainly a bit of a character... Thought he looked very composed on the ball and reckon he has the potential to do well for Saints.

We need to realise there are going to be days like this, we all expect to win games like yesterday but it's not so easy. Only the top 6 teams are really capable of taking maximum points against teams like West Brom and Sunderland, we're just not at that level, which is why I thought a draw was most likely.Still, I'm happy enough with 4 points so far, don't think we've been anywhere near as good as we can be

Can't see any photo that shows that - what number?

A fe of us got 10 points in the Prediction League yesterday, so perhaps we knew before hand that these are our banana skins

Osvaldo will really have to watch it because yesterday he was a kindly(or useless) ref away from being sent off in his home debut. Probably trying too hard thus excusable. If the ref hadn't accorded a second chance to Gardner a few minutes earlier on I think Osvaldo might have gone. Watched the game twice, not all that enthusiastic about our performance, we seem so wasteful.

With Danni being a bit of a nut case he well maybe sent off few times this season, but I quite like his dynamism and he 'dirty tactics'. Sometimes I think we're just a little bit too nice as a team if you know what I mean. Will be interesting to see if any of his 'enthusiasm' rubs off on any of the other players.

Played well I thought, dominated the game. Sunderland got their early goal, and then parked the bus so it was always going to be difficult to break that down. Still feel we do not have enough pace in the final third, and aren't moving the ball quick enough. Ramirez and Osvaldo both appeared to be on the same wavelength though, and I think it'll be pretty exciting as that partnership develops.

Pics 20 & 21 clearly show Osvaldo is being climbed all over despite him trying to take mateys shirt

Defensively we look solid, keeping possession very well. I was originally dissapointed that Cork was displaced so easily by VW but watching him its obvious why. He is such a dominant midfielder that it removes the necessity to play with 3 defensively minded midfielders and frees up Schneiderlin to help out the attack.

We still struggle to break teams down, though as I have thought before I think its more because of Lamberts lack of dynamic movement in and around the box, I think PDO will change that.

Chambers and Shaw look v solid defensively, Clyne gave a different element when he came on though helping to give an extra dimension around the box. As impressed as I have been with CC I think Clyne coming back is a good thing as the majority of our width comes from the FBs.

JWP is an exceptional talent, was v impressed with him last year but he has definately kicked on. His dead ball delivery, ball retention and overall game is excellent for a lad of his age, his vision, composure and movement is very very exciting to watch.

J Rod, dont get what all the fuss is about, I didnt see this poor game everyone is talking about ? was unlucky not to get two goals today, he could have had a hattrick but certainly looked dangerous to me and works well in the tactics, presses well and causes teams a headache.

Lambert, like J Rod wasted chances IMO. You can see his quality, but today wasnt his day. Touch off, lack of movement. Id have taken him off and left AL on to increase fluidity around Sunderlands parked bus.

Ramirez, the boy has what it takes, hopefully we will start to see it more often.

Lovren, a class above, you can see it in everything he does, composed, assertive, classy defender.

John O'Shea is an arguementative, niggly, horrible lump of average footballer.

Overall, we need to get more clinical, its all well and good winning and keeping possession but we need to have that extra gear around the oppositions box.

I don't know how people can say Lambert was rubbish? He nearly scored in the first half with a trade mark header and then hit a great shot in the second which produced a good save from the keeper. He was a menace all afternoon for the Sunderland defence, just because he didn't score doesn't mean he was Rubbish!

100% agree. Lambert was continually an outlet and a real menace to Sunderland....

I think I would break down the claim that 'he was rubbish' by saying that his pass completion and retaining of the ball was poorer than usual today.

I also think he realised it himself as near the end he could have had a shot but didn't take it on, instead panicking and passing it to their centre backs.

Unlucky not to score but his link up play was below his usual high standards.

Strange game in that nobody was particularly poor, but we didn't play that well. Soft goal to give away and then moved the ball too slowly to really get amongst them, until the last 20. I thought fonte had one of his best games at this level and not just because of the goal, I thought he did well all round.

I thought the turning point was the off side goal, and not getting an early equaliser. It was always going to be tough once they settled down and held on for a 1-0 or 1-1.

Fonte and Lovren look like they are building a good partnership at CB
