JWP was just amazing. The new Gareth Bale. The accuracy of his passes, free kicks make him obvious choice for corners too. In watching JWP play today I've not felt such pride and love for the club for such a long time. Going to be be the club's hero for years to come.

Saints match on SS1 at 8pm (UK time)

Thought we were the better team. Would have won had we had a proper ref; the one today was dire!!

JWP excellent; Lallana had a good game; Osvaldo looked good, as did Ramirez when he came on.

JWP, Gaston and Osvaldo were positives. Lallana back to his best, but Lambert looks isolated at times. Glad di Canio didn't get a win, nasty team but the worst thing was the ref - god he was awful although one of his mistakes was to our benefit - he should of sent Osvaldo off but as yellow wasn't a yellow it evened it out

Ok so a frustrating 90 mins - but unlike last season, a team came to sit and we still found plenty of ways through (just didn't put them away). On another afternoon it could have been 4-1.

JWP is going to be a star, and Osvaldo looks class.

Need a pacey wide man to get more crosses into the box for Osvaldo (We have no one who runs at the defence, that creates chances). Ramirez linked well with Dani a few times and both should start next game. Lambert too slow and missed good chances, i don't think we should play both Osvaldo and Lambo together, Lallana was crap first half but had a great 25 mins in the 2nd but i'm still unsure of him playing out wide, jrod seemed to have no impact at all.

JWP man of the match!!

MP really needs to bite the bullet and drop lambert for Osvaldo, our starting 4 attacking players were poor and wont fire us into Europe, yes we didn't really get to see Osvaldo proper game today but he is top quality and probably would of taken Lambert's chances better. There is also no way Lambert can play in the hole, that should be either Lalllana or Ramirez place.

My mate from USA watched the game live and sent me two reports: one at half time , one at full time.

Here goes:

1-0 Sunderland at halftime. Are you able to listen to it on the radio? I find one major difference between the top tier teams and everyone else is precision passing. The Saints seem to be losing a lot of balls in the middle third which prevents them from having real scoring opportunities. However, I am impressed with Lambert and his ability to get his head on the ball. He had a wonderful opportunity towards the end of the first half that he really should have put away. He was also pulled down in the penalty area but was not given the call...much to the chagrin of the home fans. More to come.

Fonte scored the tying goal. 1-1 FT. A bit of an unfortunate score for the Saints. They were the better team in the 2nd half. The offensive attack was greatly improved, and there were many scoring opportunities. Finishing could be better, but i think the offense shows promise. Some questionable calls went against the Saints. A loss would have been devastating based on the quality of play. I imagine a draw is tolerable. Osvaldo is as advertised, skillful, dangerous and volatile. Enjoyable experience. I am glad I was able to see them play.

If any Sunderland fans are reading this

...

GTFO the prem with those tactics, no one wants to watch sh#te like you

And yet they came away with a point and came very close to getting all three. They were very poor but clearly had a game plan to frustrate us and it nearly worked.

Tell your American mate that the term "Offense" is offensive to us. ;)

Well......maybe I have no right to be but i'm disappointed, not because I think we have a right to win against Sunderland but because we are better than what I just saw by a long way. For me it was all a bit choppy and we didn't click. Ricky was off his game and Jrod was, well, Jrod. He reminds me of the younger Theo Walcott where something might happen but no one knows what it will be, least of all him. I don't like that. He might pull it off now and then but at the end of the day he just isn't good enough for me.

There were, however, plenty of positives. I am extremely confident about all our new signings. All 3 of them ooze class and are a different standard of player that i've been used to seeing in a Saints shirt in recent times. I could easily turn, have the op and offer Wanyama my services. JWP had an excellent game and was probably man of the match over the 90 minutes. Gaston looked motivated and played well. Even Fonte had his head screwed on a bit tighter than usual, as much as I would prefer he wasn't in the team (not withstanding shooting from 35 yards for reasons known only to himself in that situation). It was a fine header from a fine cross. He does that sometimes just to make me feel guilty about me making him my scapegoat for everything.

The ref........I will diplomatically say he was 'harsh' on us. The Jrod goal.......for me he was level but when it's that tight it can go either way. The penalty......i've seen them given and I felt it was just about enough for a pen. So I think with those 2 incidents we were unlucky we didn't get one of them in our favour.

Sunderland.......I don't think they were bad at all. They scored and tried to spoil the game from there and I think they were disciplined and they did that quite well. I can't knock them for that.

Frustrating conceding at the start - seemed like we were still in the dressing room. Played well second half but looks like we will struggle to break down teams again when they score first or come for a point. If we score the first goal we win. JWP was excellent today. Anyone know if Shaw is badly injured or was it just a precaution to bring him off after that clattering towards end of first half?

JWP really impressed me today. His set piece delivery is something we have lacked for ages, and he seems supremely confident. We lacked a cutting edge, I thought Lallana and Osvaldo also looked good, Lambert was alright but JRod was average. Ramirez frustrated a but but u genuinely see signs he will come good

So. So happy after that game, we looked awesome. One mistake right at the start cost us the win, our team oozes class...... what a time to be a Saints fan.

Only a point... I know. But nonetheless. Buzzing right now.

You can't just assume we would have won if Sunderland hadn't scored first. Neither team really looked like scoring for large periods of that game. We may ooze class on the ball but our delivery was very poor today and our finishing just as bad. Lambert and JRod were especially guilty of giving the ball away and wasting chances. We need a big improvement in the final third from the team.

Don't get me wrong. .. you make some excellent points but the core of the team is there to really excel.

Last season we would have lost this. We need a player like coutinho. He would have been the player to run at defences. We don't have anyone like that now. That said, once Osvaldo gets settled into our style of play, we can only get better especially finishing off moves.

We played too much through the middle. No width whatsoever for the front men to capitalise on. We need that pacey winger!

Have to agree with this comment. We only play through the D. I think there is a lot of 'hype' on here about how 'well' we played when effect Sunderland were quite comfortable until a set piece undid them. Our open play was not that threatening and quite predictable.

As we now don't have wide men at all unless you include AL and JR Then how do we change the flow the game? How do we get in behind?

Summary:

Good possession, Osvaldo looks classy, A draw was a bit fortunate in the end based on how the game went - not the possession we had...

We need a pacey wide man to have an impact. Jay Rod struggled and just looks a bit short in this league.....

Came back to grab a point late on, so should feel happy. But instead feel angry and frustrated. One off the wrist, curry and booze now.

Too much information ;)

Really good performance, stifled by a sunderland side who stuck solidly to their game plan, pack midfield and defence and sit on an early lead.

JWP m o m for me. Chambers impressed me as well.

Ref was, as others have pointed out, genuinely appalling. He's not going to enjoy watching the replay of that game. Also, I was in kingsland centre, and the lino that side almost outdid the ref for sheer incompetence.

Final note before I dig the car out of the east street carpark, I was worried by SRL's injury. Most around me said he'd whacked his foot, but it looked more to me as though he had pulled up sharply while running......anyone on that side get a clear view of it? I hope like hell its not a hamstring, which is how I saw it.

Solent apparently said he had a dead leg? I'm more worried about Shaw's injury- took a clattering at end of first half hopefully just a precaution bringing him off

Just in from the pub nice surprise to find the game on, only got to see second half. I thought we were far and away the best team. Lambert unlucky not to score today. Fully deserved a point Gaston looked good when he came on. Gonna have some fun with Osvaldo looks extremely volatile, but also skilful can see him being exceptional when he gets up with the speed off the premier league. Sunderland on that performance will be in for another long arduous season.

Least said about Lee Mason the better, simply awful.

Hmm, I wonder what those that forecast us winning 3-0 are thinking now?

Indeed! I wonder what those who predicted 2-0 and 4-0 are thinking? What about those who predicted 0-1? The were close. I wonder what they're thinking right now. And those who predicted 1-1, what are they thinking. And what about 2-2? I wonder what people who predicted 4-1 are thinking right now? I would love to know what people who forecast 6-2 are thinking? And I'm interested to know what those who thought it would be 1-3 are thinking.

Frustrating result but a lot to be excited about, when the boys really start to gel over the next few games we should see some fireworks.

Ossie is class if a little volatile (but we knew than anyway), Gaston looks like he means business and Wagamama is a monster. JWP + Adam also had a good games.

Make Ossie the spearhead, put Ricky in the hole and let Gaston supply the bullets and we're going to do some damage.

Referee was awful, Jay Rod was onside and looked like both of the penalty calls should have been given. Still, can't complain about the ref too much as we didn't take our chances. Hopefully when Osvaldo gets used to the team he'll start banging them in, looked very threatening at times. Powerful and very good with his feet.

Also a mention for Dejan Lovren, who I thought was f*cking excellent. 2 very solid performances in a row from our CB pairing for the first time since....Killer and Claus!?

How can people say Rickie was rubbish? He worked his butt off and was everywhere as he was forced to shake off hi minders. /Was unlucky a couple of times which would have had people singing his praises had they gone in. Though Lallana played much better today and hopefully he's regaining the form that made him much sought after 18 months ag. Clyne did make all the different as the defense looked very shaky prior to his arrival.

What the **** was their no 17 doing?!? He was ducking massive but seems to be incredibly top heavy as all he did was fall over in different parts of the pitch all afternoon....

Osvaldo made some brilliant runs and looks very skill full.... Will be sent off at some pint for sure.... Must be the first time one of our strikers, on his debut, has failed to be pulled up for being offside.......

WP and Chambers looked very impressive, but neede to do more overlapping runs

Thought it was very noticeable the difference Clyne made when he came on - just gave us another dimension. I look forward to matches when both our full-backs are pepared to bomb forward. Chambers and Shaw will get better/more consistent at this, but I thought today both looked a little toothless against some canny and frustrating opponents.

Bah, would have taken a point before hand (after WBA win), but we could so easily have won that.

Also, Di Canio is a tw.at.

Both shaw and chambers I thought were impressive however it dd seem as if Luke was holdin back a bit! Hope he wasn't too injured after that horrendous tackle. Think chambers will be great given chance.

Otherwise...

Wanyama bossed first half, JWP was excellent in 2nd.

Lallana was great, lots of flair an commitment!

Ref was a cock. Couldn't believe the amount of chances we squandered against a team

who did nothing whatsoever.
