Fonte levels late on for Saints.

Thoughts?

Frustrating match. Should have won it. Bad goal to concede. And most of all: Lee Mason stinks.

Decent if frustrating result. Switching off and conceding that early goal was so costly as it allowed them to just sit and absorb pressure. A game last season i think we would have lost, so a point more of the board against a reasonable side. Thought Ramirez looked bright when he came on & Osvaldo is going to get sent off at some point this season.

Ward-Prowse is going to one hell of a player if he continues like this. His set pieces are just amazing.

Thought it was a poor game by are standards with many players being avarage today.

Posted

Good to see us keep the ball, but still failing to find the back of the net until late.

Ref was a joke and we clearly denied two free kicks.

Ossie a little worrying with his temper, i think and lucky not to be sent off.

Still, a draw and a win in 1st two. Onward and upward.

Lee Mason wouldn´t be able to lead a game of 10 yr olds....

Sunderland are infuriating

Jay Rod is sh#te

JWP has been our best player over the last two games

Gaston and Osvaldo linked up well together and should've started

Lambert is gonna struggle to hit 10 this year

Posted

Just seen the stats, we had 17 shots and 63% possession, should have won but a point is better than nowt.Ramirez looked very good as did lallana

Posted

Full points in the prediction league, had a feeling all the optimism was cancel out a win.

Excellent second half, should have won, some poor heading straight at the keeper - could have been 3-1 or 4-1.

More games together and we'll do well.

My hard on has turned to a chubby. I'm not totally flaccid after this. We played well, and will do very well this season if we can keep up this kind of performance.

Posted

we utterly dominated.

thought we were OK in the 1st half, slow getting the ball forward

2nd half, it would have been a travesty had we not scored

deffo 2 points dropped

thought the CB's looked very solid

Wanyama is a rock

Lallana good in 2nd half

gaston looked very lively when coming on

have to be honest

lambert and rodriguez were rubbish. missed many chances

ref was terrrible

my MoM

JWP. he is excellent

Posted

Really encouraging performance from JWP. Not just the set pieces, but very good retention and seemed to look for (and more often than not complete) a forward pass before looking for a sideways ball.

Posted

2 games 4 points - great start to the season. Could have had more, created some good chances on another day we might have won this one. Lallana looked good i thought, JWP was excellent, I like the look of Osvaldo too.

Going into the game I thought that we would win but all things considered it's still a good day to be a Saints fan! I'll enjoy my beer tonight.

Very impressed with wanyama, he is a rock!!

Thought Osvaldo was lucky not to get a second yellow, that would've been a horror start to his time at the club.

I'm just thankful for the point, i could see that turning into one of those super annoying days.

Traffic meant I missed most of the game - caught the last 10 mins when I got in.

talkSPORT couldnt believe some of the decisions that went against us. Ref by all accounts was shocking.

If you'd offered 4 points from the opening 2 games I would have taken it at the start of the season.

Lee Mason is obviously a code for Free Mason . Booked Osvaldo just because he had his picture taken with the pope the other day. Looked a good goal to me from Jay Rod.

Thought we played well, but I think teams will target Shaw like PDC did today. Double up on him and take a booking to slow him down.

Brave substitutions as well to really attack them at the end.

Should've been more but happy to have got something. 4 points from two sides that are about our level is a good return.

We lacked cutting edge again, Rodriguez full of ideas but not quite got the shooting boots on. Hopefully the signing of Osvaldo will help us put a few more away, liked his off the ball movement, always trying to play off the shoulder of the defender.

Clyne came on and showed glimpses of what we miss when he is out of the team, genuine beat a man pace that pushes defenders back and causes problems.

MOTM JWP. Quality delivery from set pieces and put in some of the better balls into the frontmen, hope he can keep it up.

Only real grumble for me was realising we couldnt bring punch off the bench. The game was crying out for somebody to run at their defence, hoping for another signing to bring that into our play.

He certainly is our new dead ball specialist, his delivery is what we lacked at set-pieces last season.

We seemed to be trying the same tactic which worked so badly in last season's fixture. Hoof it long at O'Shea and Diakite and act surprised when they win the header. Our final delivery was poor. We had a lot of possession but did little with it. JRod and Lambert looked poor, giving the ball away very carelessly and wasting the rare decent chances we did create.

Sunderland were absolutely terrible but we didn't make them pay for it. Still, it's another point on the board. I'd have taken 4 points from our opening two fixtures if you'd offered it to me a week ago. 4 more than we got in these 2 matches last year but we have some serious homework to do if we are serious about top half.

Posted
If JWP can put balls in like that, why don't we try him with the free-kicks that Rickie always takes?

Im sure he will soon!! 18 annd more exciting than Shaw.....boy we have the basis of an awesome team...I wont go as far as comparing the Utd lot of Giggs,Scholes, Neville and Neville, Beckham etc but Shaw, JWP, Morgan (hes as good as homegrown!!), Chambers, and add in "youngsters" Clyne, Ramirez, and the future is looking damn good!!

Posted

Excellent 2nd 1/2 performance.

AL much better 1/2 have, Gaston looked good when he came and Chambers also looked the part on but JWP was the best player on the pitch IMHO.

JRod didn't have a good game and we REALLY need width.

I know many fans will say as such when an expected result does not go their way

but he was utterly shyte

took us what? 10 games to get that last season?

Thought it was very noticeable the difference Clyne made when he came on - just gave us another dimension. I look forward to matches when both our full-backs are pepared to bomb forward. Chambers and Shaw will get better/more consistent at this, but I thought today both looked a little toothless against some canny and frustrating opponents.

Bah, would have taken a point before hand (after WBA win), but we could so easily have won that.

Also, Di Canio is a tw.at.

Posted

Lee Mason, was poor.

We was poor too (except JWP, CC & Lovren). Not clinical enough in the final third. We do not score points by retaining possesion for ninety minutes.

Posted

Thought JWP, Lovren and Wanyama were outstanding. Gaston also excellent when he came on. Osvaldo has lots of class, but does need to be careful. Loved however when he sprinted flat out about 65m to close their keeper down, so looks like he really wants to make a good impression.

Not the best day for Lambert, Jay and Morgan , but it happens.

1-1 flattered them. Gaston to start next week please in place of Jay.

Love the league table, but these should be the 3 point bankers, if we have sights on Europe!

before last week Im sure we'd all have taken 4 points from these games so a good start.....just frustrating given the very good play for most of today!

Posted (edited)

I don't know how people can say Lambert was rubbish? He nearly scored in the first half with a trade mark header and then hit a great shot in the second which produced a good save from the keeper. He was a menace all afternoon for the Sunderland defence, just because he didn't score doesn't mean he was Rubbish!

If you're looking for evidence this will be a great season, there was plenty to be had here. First and foremost... another big step up for JWP. Killer set piece delivery. And a lot more. Friends, we have ourselves another big star in the making. Second... Adam Lallana is back. He had an awesome game. Maybe Chambers somewhat to blame for the goal, but overall he is gold. Lovren and Wanyama continue to rock and roll. You know something big is happening when Morgan gets outshone.

Ossie: some incredible touches and a real sense of how good a player he is... but wow, MP will have to find a way to cool him down.

Rickie: mixed day. Quite a few botched passes, and free kicks, but also a couple of great headers, a blistering strike and some pleasing knock downs.

I don't buy the anti JayRod comments. Yes, he lost the ball a few times... but his pace, turning, and ambition for the breakthrough play were all there.

Overall, this was one of those days where we deserved to win and didn't. That's football. But I watched the game against Sunderland last season at St Mary's ...and there was no comparison. We're a vastly better team now.

I'm sticking with top half prediction....

I'd happily sit and have a pint with you.

JWP MotM here too. Some nice play in parts and as other have said, on another day, we could easily of won that. So glad we didn't lose though which we might of done last season.

Lovely 'dinked' pass from Ossie into JRod who should of scored lets be honest. Keep those points coming lads. Onwards and upwards.

I was especially pleased to see Gaston up his game. I had wondered if he needed someone like Ossie to fire up his passion......I think it may well happen between them!!

unlikley away from home...possibly Osvaldo though

What a frustrating game to watch. JWP was immense and can only get better. Clyne did well considering he was a left back and I thought Lambert and J Rod struggled a bit. Maybe they tried too hard because of Osvaldo waiting in the wings!!

I do enjoy Fonte late goals though. He is good at them.

Gaston and Osvaldo to start next week.
