No more homophobic chants

It's a difficult one really. I have a lot of Brighton fans as friends who kind of enjoy the banter, their favourite riposte to said chant is normally 'You're too ugly to be gay' which is also a lot funnier than the one directed their way.

I'm not one to essentialise, but gay people do actually have a sense of humour. One of my friends, a Posh S/T holder who is gay, takes no offense to the 'we can see you holding hands' chant. That said, he would most definitely object to individuals/groups of fans calling out 'poof', 'pansy', 'such and such takes it up the arse', which makes a pejorative connection between a players behaviour on the football pitch and sexual orientation.

In those of sort of instances, the persons/groups doing the chanting, probably don't actually think the player is gay, but are just targeting something deemed effeminate (shirking a tackle etc.) and then lazily employing homophobic language to make their point.

For gay people watching in the crowd though, when other spectators are invoking their identity as a kind of insult, that must be pretty damn humiliating.

Those type of fans need to be educated, sanctioned, or chucked out of football grounds, full-stop.

Seems reasonable. Though the only gay person I've discussed it with couldn't care less about it and didn't find it humiliating in any way, because he was fine rationalising that it's only thickoes who say stuff like that anyway.

FWIW I don't think there's anything remotely offensive about "we can see you holding hands", but it's about as amusing and original as singing about sheep****gers has been for 20 years (i.e. not at all).

I remember when Man U put us out of the cup at St Mary's in the mid 2000s, the refrain from the Northam and substantial sections of the Saints support was "Ruud Van Nistelroy takes it up the Arse!"

Now my question is this: Is that Nistelroy-phobic, homophobic, or both?

It certainly was offensive and I don't mind admitting I joined in and thoroughly enjoyed it. Is just being offensive illegal now? Would the entire Northam be liable for arrest if repeated now?

Singing come on you saints might get banned in the future as it might offend other religious groups who dont have saints

There is no end to the PC world thought process,

I did have a wry smile when they said you would be banned from going to the world cup in brazil if you were cuaght make such chants, Just how many football fans from the UK will be going to the world cup,

Personally i hope they soon outlaw anti ginger chants so we never have to hear that bloody "look like a wotsit" song again.

I remember sitting in the Northam a few seasons ago and the team we were playing had a ginger keeper , The bloke next to me wouldn't stop giving him all sorts of ginger gibes ! Until I nudged bim and pointed out that there was a MASSIVE ginger headded bloke sat behind him haha

Jeez, all the cretins come out of the woodwork on threads such as these.

Pretty amazing how so many try and subsume an argument about tackling homophobia under the umbrella of 'political correctness gone mad'.

That really is the refuge of a complete idiot.

The problem with some chants is how repetitive and boring they are, and the manner in which they are chanted. The "does your boyfriend know you're here" is a bit unoriginal now, and is anyway only done to wind up the straight fans: don't think any gay guys could give a monkey's.

Last season's opener at the Etihad on a Sunday we heard briefly the chant: "You're only here for the village".. I just looked across to the bay chanting it, gave a big grin and gave them the thumbs up. It was a good night out....

Mine is quoted pretty much directly from Stewart Lee

The point being that your failure to recognise the OP was not being serious, but was himself mocking the same viewpoint as you were, totally invalidates your assertion of "the rhetoric and the implied values of the OP".

The OP was himself also referencing Stewart Lee, but was far more subtle in doing so. Too subtle for many I notice.

Grey Crab comes across as a curmudgeonly c*nt on here, and I love him for that, but he is actually a very thoughtful individual who doesn't say things lightly.

Now, this all may be true of the OP, but without a single clue of sarcasm, how are those of us who don't know him supposed to know this?

The OP needs to grab a little winky if he wants us to get on board with him.

See what I did there in the homophobe thread? ;)

It also doesn't include lesbians who might feel alienated by this chant that implies that homosexuality is a solely male dominated activity. I mean a lesbian wouldn't have a boyfriend would they, so not only is the chant homophobic its also sexiest. 'Does your partner know you're here?' Is much more all encompassing it applies to gay men and women as well as straight people, although perhaps single people might be offended by this chant, so we need to come up with something that includes them as well.

You're absolutely right, I have totally failed to spot this due to it's extreme subtlety. Mind you, I'm terrible for that. This reminds me of the time I failed to spot my own sweat in the ocean. Thanks for picking me up on it though!

I'm genuinely not having a go but research the meaning of the word 'cretin' and you'd never use that word again. It is very cruel.

Am I right that signing "does your boyfriend know you're here" now gets you a 3 year ban from all English football stadia?

When I sing that it's directed at the female fans. I'm subtly enquiring bout their relationship status cos I don't always have access to their facebooks.
