a quiz question came up the other day. i am aware of it, and the answer for that matter, but i think it is wrong. if so, what is the correct answer?

question was: which league team has played the most past present and future england captains at the same time?

answer: saints, six captains, twice. players listed were; shilton, ball, channon, keegan, wright, mills and watson. six of them one game and then later in the year, a different combination.

however, i think this is wrong. is it, and if it is, what is the answer?

Well Shilton and Mills never played for Saints with Keegan, Channon and Ball. (One of the great tragedies is, if Keegan had stayed when Shilton left, we might have won the league.) Watson never played with Wright. Did Wright ever captain England? Don't remember that. I think the answer is four - Keegan, Channon, Ball and Watson in 1980/81 and 1981/82

Ask me again in a few years and the answer will be Lambert, JRod, Shaw, Cork, Lallana and Clyne!

is it still the saints holding the record, or is that the most we have played at any one time?

Alongside Gareth Bale...

If this is true (and it sounds feasible) then what a great quiz question to put around the web when Bale becomes the most expensive player in the world.

Bale/Pele/Best/Jesus - what team did they all play for in one game? (friendlies don't count).

This is a very interesting (if often misquoted) question, first prompted by the signing of Kevin Keegan (in 1980) who was England captain during the period when we had other England players in the club, some of whom had also captained the national side - at some stage of their careers.

The CORRECT question should be : When did Saints field a team with FOUR players who had captained England?

The CORRECT answer would seem to be : FOUR.......during the end of the 1980/81 season.

Although he didn't start in the first game, Dave Watson (who had been signed in Oct.79 and won 18 caps in his time with Saints) played in 4 League games alongside Keegan, Alan Ball, and Mick Channon (who'd played his final England game in 1977, but nevertheless had captained them on a previous occasion.) Watson then left in October 81 to be replaced by the emerging Mark Wright.

Other players sometimes mentioned don't come into the same category. Both Channon and Keegan played their last games in MAY 1982 but Peter Shilton England keeper and Captain wasn't signed until August that year (although he spent 5 years with the club and is the most capped Saints player ever.) Shilton finally left in May 1987. Alan Ball who was first with the club between 1976-78 returned for a second time 1981/82.

Mark Wright as a very young player during this time and although he'd debuted for Saints, he didn't get his first cap until May 84. Not sure he was England captain during his time with Saints.

Mick Mills (who'd also captained the national side earlier) was signed in November 82. (and stayed until May 1985).

Other players who (sometimes get included in this strange equation ) are;

David Armstrong (capped twice ..once in 82 and again in 84) and Steve Williams (who got 6 caps 1983-84 ) before moving to Arsenal, but neither of them ever captained England, and neither did Frank Worthington or Charlie George who also played for us in the 1980's era, but were never capped whilst with Saints.

Danny Wallace got his only cap in Jan.1986 (whilst Shilton was still at the club) .....but Russell Osman (former England player) didn't join until Aug 1988 (in Chris Nicholl's time as manager)..

So the only correct answer is (as above ) FOUR .

NOTE:

However you look at it, it's extremely impressive that in a period of 10 years, Saints had fielded teams with 12 different English international players, 4 of whom had got their first cap whilst at the club.
