What time did they read your email and reply? If before the start of your shift I can't see what they are griping about. They had forewarning.

If you've been late 3 times in 6 months and then miss half a shift they've probably got reason enough not to be happy. Doesn't really matter why you've been late/not been in work - that's just working life for you. To be completely honest, if you care about not getting anymore grief - get an earlier bus.

On the plus side - as somebody said above - you won't get sacked for it.

Basically this FWIW

But as much as Weston has covered everything I said earlier and more you dont really need me to repeat it so I wont bother, that said, you were not AWOL as they replied to your email and so knew exactly where you were, you were 'late' or I woukd push for 'ill' as you were not in a fit state to work. That said I think the union rep will have a decent time fighting your case so you will be ok.

Do yourself a favour though and ensure you get an earlier bus.

You obviously do not know the real end of the workforce, if you mention Union in minimum wage jobs that come from job agencies then I can assure you you wont be there long, Unions can only do so much if they only come in for disciplines, they cant negotiate terms and conditions, wages, retirements and protection from poor working practices.

A company could always say they dont recognise that Union so your point is moot.

I manage a lot of minimum wage guys and despite the company not recognising any union every single worker is entitled to join a union and be represented by them in any disciplinary or grivence meeting. There is absolutely no chance of them being treated any differently or forced out for wishing to join a union. HR will be there to see to that.

Protection from poor working practises are by and large covered by employment legislation.

Just don't phone in sick with the excuse "I can't come in because I'm hungover"

I know someone who did use that excuse on the phone (although his version is that he said he was still drunk...which, apparently, makes it ok).....

Although to be fair, all he got was a slap on the wrists.

Just go along with it mate. As long as you're diplomatic about it you'll be fine. Apologise for any inconvenience caused and come up with what the managers would call "constructive solutions" in the event of you being in a similar event again.

Speaking of disciplinary hearings, after I retired i worked for a small IT company (10-12 employees) for about 6 months to have something to do. It was run by a 'style-over-substance' guy who was a very good salesman but an absolutely shocking manager. He had almost no concept of organisation, timekeeping or efficiency, and anyone who criticised his working style he hacked off every so often until they went away. His 2 deputies were basically controlled by him through manipulation/preferential treatment. I learnt from someone there that the staff turnover rate was so bad 90% of the (full-time) staff had replaced itself twice in the space of 4 years.

Anyway one of the young lads in the department i managed got given a disciplinary under the guise of 'poor performance' and he got me to help him at the meeting. I looked at the reasons for his disciplinary and it became quite clear that certain incidents had been totally twisted to make this lad look bad and there appeared to be a personal vendetta going on. On some points they quoted things he'd written in emails and invented their own implications, and another reason was him being emailed at midday to send a package to an important client and he hadn't done it. The fact that on that day he'd previously been instructed to help with an office move and had spent the entire day out the office with no internet connection was conveniently not mentioned.

At the meeting we went through each point and despite coming up with a perfectly good explanation for 80% of the points he got given a final warning and warned he'd face the sack if there was any repeat. He put his resignation in the following morning. I was cheesed off with how he'd been treated/the company in general and resigned as well and the other two lads from the same department were going to uni 4-5 months down the line, had previously found out about it and they resigned as well.

The manager tried to get rid of one employee and in the space of a couple of weeks ended up losing an entire department. The chaos that subsequently ensued was priceless and the managers at the top got forced into doing the jobs right at the bottom.

I received two separate texts from two of the managers after I left, both asking if I could come in and show them how the company database worked.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi guys,

Had my disciplinary hearing yesterday, here is what happened:

presented to me last week was a new letter informing me of the hearing for 'poor timekeeping' and alleged gross misconduct ( going awol )

the evidence provided, was 2 occasions I was late plus the time stated in this thread.

One of the occasions was me being 4 minutes late for my shift. but was diverted a different route.

2nd occasion, roadworks near ocean village, me and 2 other colleagues on my bus got off and walked and we were 25 minutes late.

and the 3rd occasion seems to be what has triggered this.

also included, were 2 emails from my boss stating that poor time keeping could lead to bla bla bla...

forgot to include my email i sent at 3:45 thought didn't they?

anyway, took my union rep in with me, who absolutely destroyed them and tore them a new ass hole when it came to the 3 occasion regarding my niece. they still tried to give me a written warning, then suggested I ride a bike from hedge end to Southampton. all they kept going on about was me not following procedure and awol and such. union rep, said common sense needs to be applied in this situation, due to the nature of my work and the consequences that could follow if i had made a mistake, due to lack of sleep.

they adjourned, come back in and it was thrown out. so happy days!

thanks for your adivce, all!

Connor
