Getting Carried Away

Gloating? Why does it have to be this positive vs negative? Why not stop trying to score points on a forum and just support and be happy with where the club is at?

I have and will always support my team, I simply wont go bat **** crazy at one victory, nor go ape**** at some quality signings when we need an awful lot more to achieve this lofty dream, the proof will be in the pudding after 38 games, some silverware and players wanting to come here from top clubs over others, thats when I shall gloat.

No just questioning whether he has been on the junk or not, lots of teams with better squads can also say that, we will need to spend millions to get a squad to challenge for a top four, realism.

We will though....

With what we've spent NC will be after top 6 or 7 this year. Our first 11 is quality now. The best I have been alive for... and there is great potential. Wage to turnover last year was very healthy. We're also losing the dead weight slowly.

Plus we seem to have some very good and crucially loyal kids coming through... With more to follow. Call me a happy clapper, but if NC says we are going to the top in the future then I won't disagree with him. I fail to see how we could have much more potential to do just that.

I'm also realistic to know that we are only a few injuries off of the dreaded jos and fox combination on the left side of defense...

But ultimately I think we are better on paper than Everton, wba, swansea , fulham etc. Close to Liverpool and still behind the top 5.... This team just needs a good (and injury free season) to develop confidence in how good they actually are! But likewise, we may not reach that potential, have a shocker with injuries and come 12th to 10th... I'm happy either way as long as we play good footy and develop youth.

I'll say one thing though. If you can be excited now then when can you be excited... The potential is there but it may not last, so if you are stable enough to enjoy the highs and the lows, I'd enjoy this high right now!!!

If you can't get carried away with what's happening to Saints now, when are you going to be able to?
There is plenty to be optimistic about - sure, but I agree with the OP that some of the threads and comments are way OTT having just played one game. Some posters either need to get some sort of perspective OR just age a little ;)

Have to LOL that poor old wum Barry has latched onto this thread like a Limpet, must be killing him that his nonsense is getting ignored, he obviously saw this thread as his time to shine.

I don't think anyone is getting carried away, quietly optimistic I would say is the general feeling from the sensible fans. We're not going to finish higher than Arsenal but the club as a whole and our team are probably in a happier place right now than they are down at the Emirates. Off field nonsense can make players under perform, I would imagine Arsenal fans are just as worried about this.

Lets be honest last week if it wasn't for a great save from Boruc we might have drawn and did we really do enough to win the game? I'm not sure, but it was a pleasing contrast last year to see us grind out a result where we played ok, I'm pretty sure last year in similar circumstances we would have drawn. It's one game though, fail to beat Sunderland and the doom merchants will be out in force again.

Difficult really to be negative about the club right now though isn't it?

- we have had an excellent summer transfer window, with 3 quality additions (way before the end of the window as well)

- signed up all the young players on long term contracts,

- had a good pre-season,

- introduced some more youngsters into the first team (just like they said they would)

- Lambert got and England Call and scored on debut.

- And we beat a team away from home (that thoroughly outplayed us twice last season), on the opening day of the season.

Can we ask for more right now? I don't think so.

Id be interested to hear your thoughts on what Im about to say TBH but talking re the WBA game;

It highlights to me what the need was to get a front man in that can run off that last man, pick up through balls and be available for when we win that ball high up the pitch.

As good as Lambert is, and he is very good, he isnt that man, and despite being very much stronger defensively then the way we started last year against WBA we showed the same lack of cutting edge at the other side of the pitch. If it wasnt for that penalty we would have drawn or lost. And for this reason Im very happy we now have a player of Osvaldos quality.

Im not even going to go into the tactics of involving Lambert in the team, ive done that to death so regardless of where we 'fit' lambert (or not as I suspect) its imperetive we play Osvaldo up top to turn the pressure we create into chances.

This time four years ago, I was extremely optimistic and happy that my other "Saints" had a good shout at getting to the Super Bowl....."Ridiculous" screamed the nay Sayers and 'cool people' (in their own mind)......Oh how they laughed and sneered....teams like the Saints don't get to the Super Bowl ha ha....Oh no....that's the reserve of teams like the Cowboys, Bears, Patriots etc....Na, perennial losers like the Saints don't get to the Super Bowl!

Well I believed from the first game of the season and kept on believing through every play of every game and loved every minute of it. And guess what?.......Not only did the Saints 'get' to the Super Bowl...We went and 'WON' the freaking thing. 2009/10 was the sporting ride of my life. Even surpassing 1976...

Now before the Barry's and the Turks start latching on and trying to make out I'm saying that Southampton are going to win the Premier League this year, I'm not.....But I do believe we could be in for a hell of a season, with a top 6-8 place within the realms of possibility and maybe even finishing above the likes of Arsenal or Liverpool.

I don't give a damn what the 'cool peeps' think.....I'm going to be enjoying every minute of the ride and I'll keep on believing until the end....and if we fall flat?.....Well there's always next season right?

That could be countered by the realists as the usual suspects are gloating after one game with comparisons against Arsenal, who by the way won 0-3 away in Europe last night, realism.

The same 'realists' that thought we were certain to go down last season at the hands of Wigan, needing a miraculous uplift in form - which they had not showed all season, and would have to have included wins against an arsenal team who were firing on all cylinders?

Those realists?

Think some sanity needs to be restored.........threads with "who is better than us", "sinclair not good enough for City so not good enough for us", etc seems way overboard. We have played 1 game.

Now if after 10 games we have, say 20 points, then that would be the time to get very excited. Without wishing to be a pessimist, MP has a lot to prove: bar a couple of games he was not good for the last few games and we have only played 1 game this season.

So whilst we look like we have bought very well only time will tell: and 1 game is not enough to make judgement (particularly as our goal scoring/creation was not great against WBA).

Looking forward to seeing how the Sunderland game goes as they mugged us last season.

Don't be such a spoil sport. Nobody is better than us.

Spare a thought for we senior types, the last thing we want to do is age more... we've aged enough already (mostly through watching Saints), so it's somebody else's turn now.

  • 4 weeks later...
Great signing there pap, he would have scored that Osvaldo even afetr all these years yesterday.

He was a superb signing, for many reasons.

I wonder if McMenemy knew that some 30 odd years later, King Kev would provide the assist for a magnificent own goal.
