But he is..

I never doubted he would be...did you?

thanks Nige for setting us us on the path.you did your part...just.

who now would have him back....nope,don't think many.

is he still our Sir Alex Ferguson?

Cortese was so right in his decision.

Comeback at Christmas. To early to judge IMO but the signs look good. But I love Nigel. Great bloke.

Three questions (one of which you answer for us); seven assertions (well, one of which you seem unsure of). Lots of ambivalence. What exactly is the point?

The loss of Nigel was harsh because of the timing, the fact he deserved at least a full season in the top flight, and because he was such a likeable, positive man.

Cortese has a vision to take us forwards, and he has to make ruthless decisions to do that. We were unsure about Pochettino to start with, largely because many of us hadn't heard about him, but he's got us playing well and with decent player additions, one of whom says he joined BECAUSE of Pochettino. Our future is bright at the moment, and long may that stay like that, but we'll always remember what Adkins did for us.

Sh!t thread or good thread? If you don't like it don't read it you bunch of old boring farts.

If you didn't read it, how would you know if it was a **** or good thread? As for boring old farts, its a shame your parents failed to teach you about good manners.

Nope, still a very good manager, I'm following his Reading career with some interest. I don't miss his press conferences which were abysmal but he put our current team together, gave us consecutive promotions and developed an exciting playing style as well as overseeing a fantastic team spirit. I still think he's one of the best English managers around.

Doubt this bit in particular would have been mentioned in if we'd lost to WBA.

In fact if we fail to beat Sunderland we'll have some fool harking back to the '20 game plus winning streak' and how Adkins was better at home than Pochettino.

He isn't, as some of the responses on here indicate.

He did better than that. I know you can point to the capitulation at the end of our Championship season, but wouldn't have been possible without the amazing start.

Wouldn't take him back right now. Not sure if there will ever be a right time.

Never was, and I'm not being terribly inconsistent by saying that I think he was a poorer manager than his record suggests. I remember reading a blog or forum post which argued that Southampton FC were the equivalent of flat track bullies in League One and the Championship. That's an interesting view, although it's worth noting that plenty of clubs have tried to throw money at promotion and failed. Just take a look at Leicester the same season we came up.

I'd like to see Nigel operate over a longer timeframe before deciding how good a manager he is. I really want him to do well. I'd love to be dissuaded from the notion that well-worn cliches were all he was about.

Cortese was so right in his decision.

Not much arguing with this.

Why would he be forgotten?

Because people dont talk about him so much now?

In life and football you have to move on, we have a new (imo brilliant) manager now so out of respect for him I think it would be disrespectful to talk about former managers too much.

Doesn´t mean anyone has forgotten or dont appreciate the fine job Adkins did.

Not likely mate - Reading fans love him.

Was reading the reading forum (say that 10 x fast) and they are saying that he has them playing the best football for 20 years

where do they that (x 10)?

http://hobnob.royals.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=1&sid=866cf4ff7e83feb8bfb82964b183a65a

Terrible subs. Blackman is utter turd.

What a waste of 3 points.

We ****ed that one up

Would have been happy with a point before the game, but to lose a 2-0 lead is unacceptable. The balance is still not right.

fans loved him at Saints, chairman wasn't as convinced though. Fans quite liked McDermott I think, chairman? not so much. If he doesn't get the desired results it doesn't matter what the fans think, if they're not there or thereabouts at the end of the year he'll get the boot and Poyet will be in there like a flash.

Got a few £'s on Poyet to Blackburn or Sheff Weds

My wife being a Reading fan said that the footy from Reading on Saturday was the best she'd seen for a few seasons. A colleague said much the same. Also mentioned odd substitutions and that has a familiar ring to it.

I also think Adkins was amongst the finest managers we have had - all too brief a period. Cortese is an assasin and if that floats your boat then great. I would have preferred Adkins staying. Whether he would be able to attract the players Poch has done we'll never know...it could be that the players are attracted by money, although I doubt that.

My wife met Adkins and said how disappointed I was and still am. He has had many Saints fans say the same since he left.

Should he return to Saints with Reading or another team, I hope he is applauded by all of us no matter what our views on this thread.

well, we will see how good he is.

he is at the team that beat us in the NPC with largly a better squad than a so called inferior manager had.

throw in the parachute payments, top 2 is a minimum really for them

Adkins did enough to convince Ramirez to sign. Think most players will be swayed by the money and size of club not manager.

Does anyone remember that wee Scottish fella that used be our manager?

Think he might have got us to an FA Cup Final or something? Always had a quip in the post match interview...

It might be seen as blasphemy on here, but I was never really that convinced with Strachan, we were very fortunate that season, our cup run apart from the 3rd round was against lower league opposition, so a relatively easy route, and when we got there I think he picked a side that would keep the scoreline down rather that go out and try and win. We had one good season with him, then he got out, claiming lack of investment and that he need a hip replacement. I personally felt he used that as an excuse

Prior to coming to us he was pretty awful at Coventry, he did ok at Celtic, but then he was a bit of a flop at Boro'. We'll see on the Scotland front. Although I think that an impossible job.

This pretty much sums it up for me. I've book marked Reading in my browser and I still find him quite inspirational. Yes, definately one of the best English managers around and could well manage a top 6 premier league team before he retires. Really want to see Reading get promoted this year

Dont understand why any Saints fan would dislike him? Delldays - why do you dislike him?

Is that the 3rd round when we thrashed Spurs 4-0, while we were up to 4th in the league? And when we lost to Arsenal 1-0 when Arsenal were a top team actually winning trophies? Ok we did not have the squad to push hard on both fronts in the end, and focused on the cup, but I would happily take an 8th place finish, cup final appearance and european qualification again, and Strachan did that with a squad of fairly decent players but without the huge investment now taking place.

Adkins lost at home to Sunderland, probably what sealed his demise. He was on borrowed time for a fair while. His handling of the GK situation was poor, very poor and such mistakes cannot be tolerated in an ambitious club. In fact the writing was on the wall for him when he decided that KD was a PL keeper and that we needed no top class replacement. .
