dan abnormal Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 Interesting how many people: 1.) Are picking Osvaldo but not upfront. Surely he will play up top rather than being shoehorned in out wide? 2.) Are picking Lambert as a no 10 style player. I know he drops deep as part of his game but could he actually play from that position all the time, or would his lack of mobility be found out, but attacking wise and also in the pressing game? The modern no 10 has to do quite a lot of pressing especially on the holding midfielders/playmakers, I really don't think lambert would be able to do this. Our no 10 will be 1 of Ramirez, Davis or Lallana.

Our no 10 will be 1 of Ramirez, Davis or Lallana. I think I would agree, especially away from home. Which brings me onto the Osvaldo position. In a World Cup year, for a player at the top limits of who we could attract can we really see him being played out wide? If the offer was to play second fiddle to Lambert and play wide or withdrawn then I doubt he would be here.
DrunkenSaint Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 sorry but Osvaldo is a lone striker and wont play behind where the attacking midfield are, meaning unless Lambert can play behind the striker he wont start and be used as a bench player or we play a 442 but thats not our way anymore. I'm sure Lambert will play there for a bit but we'll need more of a attacking midfielder in there for it to work better, if Ramirez and Osvaldo can link up well i reckon it would be a great pairing. --------------------Boruc-------------------- Clyne------ Lovren---- Yoshida----- Shaw ----------Wanyama----Schneiderlin-------- Puncheon/JRod------- Ramirez-------- --Lallana -------------------Osvaldo------------------ or --------------------Boruc-------------------- Clyne------ Lovren---- Yoshida----- Shaw -----Cork-------Wanyama-----Schneiderlin-------- Puncheon------- Osvaldo-------- --Lallana-------

CanadaSaint Posted 20 August, 2013 Share Posted 20 August, 2013 Jeez, we don't just have a hell of a starting line up, but also the ability to throw a completely different look at the opposition if things aren't working as well as we would like. As we strengthen our starting group, so our bench looks better and better. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around what's happening.

Lambert will drop deeper IMO. Even today, Lambert doesn't play as the furthest player forward. I think that Rodriguez, Lallana, Ramirez and Puncheon will be 2 from 4 for wide positions with Gaston dropping to 10 role based on rotation and injury. ghq Posted 20 August, 2013 Share Posted 20 August, 2013 I'd have JRod in before Punchy or Lallana. He will have a great season this year. Fancy JRod to break into worldcup squad this year Which position would he play? As I really don't think he's a premier league quality striker... yet. lloydie Posted 20 August, 2013 Share Posted 20 August, 2013 --------------- Osvaldo ----------------- Lallana ------- Lambert -------- Rodriguez ------- Wanyama -- Schneiderlin--------- Shaw --- Lovren ----- Yoshida ---- Clyne ---------------- Boruc ----------------- Bench: Gazzaniga, Chambers, Fonte, Cork, Puncheon, Mayuka, Ramirez Im inclined to think this is how we will look aswell. Makes more sense for Lambert to drop deeper and play Osvaldo off him.
Professor Posted 20 August, 2013 Share Posted 20 August, 2013 This thread has shown that the best team is not necessarily the best eleven individuals. We seem to be mostly agreed on the defence, including the DMFs and nailed on starting places for Lambert and Osvaldo. Its the other two places that are fluid. Leaving out a £12m player in Ramirez is a hard decision and JRod provides a real goal threat, so both might edge it over Lallana, but Lallana is left side specialist so even if he isn't better than the other two, he provides balance in the team. Then there are Puncheon and JWP, both worth a place in the side but maybe just edged out when GR and JR are both fully fit. So my front four would be Osvaldo, Rickie, JRod, and Gaston but the secret of success in the Prem is being able to bring in players of equal quality when needed and we are close to be able to do that. I'd still like another defender to compete at LB.
mynameisthehulk Posted 20 August, 2013 Share Posted 20 August, 2013 Rickie won't play sometimes, it is that simple. I appreciate people are sentimental but there is no way that he will play in the hole on a regular basis when we have Lallana and Ramirez who both specialise in that position. I would imagine this means we will rotate :- Boruc Clyne Yoshida Lovren Shaw Morgan Wanyama Rodriguez Ramirez Lallana Osvaldo Boruc Chambers Fonte Jos Fox/Targett Cork Davis Punch Guly Mayuka Lambert We have pretty decent cover in all positions as you can see, I imagine those in the 2nd XI shown above will slot in often dependent on tactics, fitness, form and suspensions. I am about to get slated I assume for dropping SRL to the 2nd XI but Osvaldo didn't come here to play wide, or sit on the bench.

Id suggest we did buy him on his own merits but also because he will ultimately fit the system that MoPo employs better and essentially should get the best out of Gaston aswell
Marsdinho Posted 20 August, 2013 Share Posted 20 August, 2013 --------------- Osvaldo ----------------- Lallana ------- Lambert -------- Rodriguez ------- Wanyama -- Schneiderlin--------- Shaw --- Lovren ----- Yoshida ---- Clyne ---------------- Boruc ----------------- Bench: Gazzaniga, Chambers, Fonte, Cork, Puncheon, Mayuka, Ramirez We will concede loads of goals with Osvaldo in goal, and only three at the back. CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 20 August, 2013 Share Posted 20 August, 2013 Anywhichway you cut it, MP has (on paper anyway) quite the best squad any Saints manager has had to select from - certainly in my memory anyway. Even our potential bench looks pretty strong.
