Barry Sanchez Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 Good article and also quite worrying, I think there is some merit in this http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/sport/football/Premiership/article1301549.ece
Saint Garrett Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 Most exciting league, not sure about whether it's the best quality wise though.
Crowds Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 Nope it's the best league! Span and France have two big teams that's about if... Especially if the barca score lastnight is anything to go by...! I don't think they can suggest we a can't attract the best when IMO falcao, bale and Cavanni are/were over priced
Batman Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 I always look at how our top teams do in europe. champions league finalists 1999 (win) 2005 (win) 2006 (runner up) 2007 (runner up) 2008 (win and runner up) 2009 (runner up) 2011 (runner up) 2012 (win) not bad really. more than any other nation in the last decade or so test will be this season after a poor year last year
Barry Sanchez Posted 19 August, 2013 Author Share Posted 19 August, 2013 The French, Italians,Spanish,Russians and Germans have all got or retained the best of the beat this year, this is the first season marque signings have not happened, other teams simply have more money now, Monaco, PSG or there are other clubs seen as a better lifestyle choice, Munich, Barcelona etc.
DuncanRG Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 No, and this article offers very little evidence that this might be the case. The Premier League has never bought the world's absolute greatest - it's made them. Think of the greatest players in the history of this league - Giggs, Henry, Cantona etc - none of them were brought in as world beaters. We've always sold our very best to the likes of Barcelona and Madrid but only a handful go on to better things. Ronaldo is the only obvious example. England remains one of the dominant countries in the Champions League - we had a winner two years ago, a finalist the year before that and it wasn't so long ago that we had an all-English final. The Kraken Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 The top 3 of the PL stand scrutiny with any other league in Europe, and the top 5 or 6 isn't bad. The bottom half of the PL is pretty non-descript though. Germany are definitely in the ascendancy right now.
Barry Sanchez Posted 19 August, 2013 Author Share Posted 19 August, 2013 are you telling me liverpool won it and got to the final by signing the world class peter crouch? or djmini traore? No they got to it via luck, good draws and players like Gerrard and Alonso being in the team.
DuncanRG Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 (edited) No they got to it via luck, good draws and players like Gerrard and Alonso being in the team. You mean their best players, who weren't brought in as world beaters?! Name a player in Man United's 2008 Champions League-winning team who was brought in as one of the world's greatest players, and didn't become one in his time at the club. Olallana Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 DO other leagues have better top 4 teams, yeah they might.... But if you are comparing the leagues PL stands tallest. If you should compare leagues I think you should compare the qualitys in teams between 6th-14th. If only the PL teams that turn out in Europa League would go more for that competition I´m sure there would be more cups won by PL Teams.
