Is Osvaldo a Ricky upgrade?

First of all no trolling intended, just a point for discussion.

Now, Ricky is very much man of the moment and rightfully so! However was our pursuit of a new striker this summer (and now signing of osvaldo) with the intention of upgrading our Ricky?

Before the England heroics this had been a talking point. At 31 does this signal rickys transition more to an impact substitute?

Personally I can't see how he's droppable at the moment but if not how do we fit both players into the lineup? Does to Ricky move to play just behind osvaldo, and if so who is then impacted, Ramirez? (Surely not but attacking mid is his position)

Will osvaldo even start initially or will he be an impact sub whilst he transitions to English football?

As a team prediction/tactic I would play:

Boruc

Clyne, lovrin, yoshinda, shaw,

Wanyama, shneiderlin,

Ramirez Lalanna

Ricky

Osvaldo

Apologies in advance for incorrect player spelling.

Don't think so, we needed an additional striker full stop. Only Rickie really got the goals for us last year and we do create a fair few openings which are often spurned.

I think they'll both play together. Osvaldo has also been known to play in a wide-attacking position in the past.

I can see a 3 pronged attack of Osvaldo - Lambert - Rodriguez. It will be fluid and dynamic, so all 3 will interchange at points.

He fits the way we play better, in the fact that he is more mobile, works hard, harries and will help with the pressing system we deploy.

Lambert is a good good player though, expect rotation, Lambert can play No 10 aswell I reckon.

Osvaldo will take us to the next level though and I would argue we would see the best of Ramirez with him up top.

Would keep J-Rod in there as he just runs all day and really fits with the system Pochettino wants to play.

I'd have:

------Wanyama--- Morgan-------

J-Rod---------Rickie--------Lallana

-------------Osvaldo------------

As would I. We then have JWP, Davis, Puncheon, Gaston et al for the inevitable injuries and suspensions. Nice.

I think when all the transfer negotiations started the answer was yes.

Harsh as it sounds, but we all know NC doesn't do sentimental. Ask Adkins.

There's nothing sentimental about keeping our best and most crucial attacking player, by quite some distance, in the team.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1738942-pablo-osvaldo-to-southampton-roma-star-would-be-a-great-tactical-fit

"Southampton fans will be conflicted at the news of Osvaldo's potential arrival. While it's certainly a step up in quality, it will jeopardise the playing time of one of Adam Lallana, Gaston Ramirez and Jay Rodriguez.

With Lambert an immovable presence up front in the team, coupled with the fact Pochettino wouldn't be caught dead playing a 4-4-2, expect Osvaldo to play off one of the flanks in a Jay-Rod-esque role."

It's not like Gaston plays a great deal anyway.

Football is a ruthless business.

When Billy Sharp played a key role in promotion, most felt he deserved a chance, he was given little more than a cameo.

When Nigel Adkins guided us to back to back promotions, most (all?) felt he deserved the whole season, he wasn't given the chance.

The reality is that Osvaldo is an upgrade on any player currently in the attacking 4. Someone is going to suffer, we may feel sad for that player, but we'll get over it if we finish in the top half.

Would love to see J-Rod, Rickie & Osvaldo play together. But would also love to see Lallana, Ramirez and JAMES WARD-PROWSE! Don't forget our youth!

Think the players who will suffer from this move the most will be Mayuka, Puncheon and Davis.
