Irresponsible spending

To be fair the OP has a point. I'm loving the quality of signings but would be foolish to not think about the future. However, the huge increase in Sky money covers the over inflated prices. Looking so forward to this seasons now if not with a little trepidation.

So youre not worried at all?

3rd biggest spenders in the league above Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal.......

Im delighted with the signing, but is it sustainable and affordable?

Few short memories on here........

I think it is a fair question you've posed Glasgow.

Although we can delight at the quality of squad we're building and admire NC's great plans, drive and ambition there is a fine edge between him succeeding and being hailed a messiah, or doing a Ridsdale, who had similar ambitions at Leeds once upon a time.

Of course we have the Liebherr Trust, but there may come a point where the family feel they have backed it enough. I hope that day is a long way off, but its foolish to assume spend, spend, spend is without some risk.

So with the TV money is that not a much better position than when we spent 15m or so to get from league 1 to the premier league?

Also did his dark lord Cortese himself say that the club HAD to be self-sufficient several times over the course of his time in charge but apparently now he's said '**** it I'm just gonna spend loads and loads of money we haven't got to try and finish seventh'.

I don't buy it, I believe he knows exactly what he is doing and also Steve Grant has explained the FFP rule on another thread.

Or perhaps you could start another thread in another timeline moaning about us not signing players.

Look at me....

Sorry to be a pedant about this, but it seems to me that too many football fans focus on the amount spent on transfer fees, when the real financial issue involves 3 things (in no particular order):

1. What's your capital outlay? (ie transfer fees)

2. What are your running costs? (ie wages)

3. What the resale value of your capital? (ie what can you flog your players for?)

Looks to me that we're pushing the envelope on point 1 a bit. But we're in okay shape on point 2 (unlike, say, QPR last season or maybe West Ham this season). I think we're in amazing shape on point 3. The Saints squad must be worth £100m+ easily?

There is spending on pit ponies and spending on race horses when you are in the Grand National. We were very good in the old days of bigging up some half baked signings.

When you are owned by the 2nd richest owners in the Premier League the kind of money we re frittering away at the present is almost a double hit of spending the interest and reducing the tax bill at he same time.

Some folks really need to wake up to the fact that we have the ability to operate in a rarified atmosphere. Which is pretty surreal.

It is also funny that having spent £17m on a pit pony himself David Gold has just found out that someone he thought was less endowed than him has just piddled far higher up the wall.

As someone who has taken great glee from the Skates recent demise, I do feel the OP is a legitimate question. Personally my concerns are somewhat diminished by the TV money, and the fact that we are currently supplementing home grown talent with very good players. However it woul only take a poor run of form/sever injury crisis etc to leave the team in a perilous position and through no fault of management or the players.

I am delighted with the squad and the signings over the past couple of seasons, but never forget 2009 and never forget what has happened to the Skates!

Well it was always going to be one of Glasgow, Barry or 110 percent who started this thread.

Or it could have been Unbelievable Jeff or maybe even Saintnick (a late entry in the field). Anyone might think there was a link there somewhere...

If we hadn't bought more than two players, there'd be a dozen more threads before 2nd September moaning about our 'lack of movement in the transfer market' or saying that other teams have done better business than us. Cortese has spoken out enough times about clubs needing to be run sustainably. Of all the decisions made since Summer 2009 how many have given us reason to question his ability to balance the books?

Yes, we've spent a lot of money. However all of the early signs point towards Wanyama and Lovren being with their fees. I have every faith that Osvaldo will deliver bang for buck too. In the main or expensive purchases have been players that will hold their stock well. If you believe that we have have been irresponsible (personally I don't), the worst case scenario is moving them on in a couple of years and recouping most of said money.

Remember when Cortese wanted backing from Ms Liebherr for his ambitious plans back in May? looks like that backing stretched to £30 mil.

Or, we're just spending the vastly increased tv money everyone and his dog knows every Prem side has got coming.

If anything it makes sense to sign players now before the market gets over-inflated next year with the World Cup and everyone else having worked out all Prem teams are loaded.

How long are we going to mentally re-spend the Chamberlain fee on this forum?

Pretty sure that bankrolled the back to back promotions.

People are still reworking the Bale transfer, can't wait for the next Walcott contract debate...

David Gold on SSN saying that we must be on the edge of the new league rules about spending money and that this could be the end of our business.

Gold would have to sell an awful lot of w*nkmags to get anywhere near us - glad the also rans are sh*tting themselves...

Oops sorry. Only just heard it and didn't look around first. Thanks for that though.

No need to apologise, if it had been entitled "David Gold spouts shiiite on SSN" I'd have been more of a fascist about it, but it's pretty well hidden!

This level of spending won't continue season on season. It's one of the reasons we're investing in younger players, so we're set for at least another 2-3 years. And should one of those players wish to move onto bigger things, we know just how good Cortese is at getting us a fair old wedge.

easy to turn a blind eye and hope for the best!! just like last time round

Lol. Epic trolling.

You're right though. The similarity between what Cortese is doing now and being in a sh1t pub near Roots Hall a few years ago hearing people sing "Michael Wilde is one of us" is just uncanny.

It's nearly impossible to distinguish the two, in fact.

F88CK it just enjoy the ride! Life's too short, if the money is available through Sky etc. spend it. No one can take the money when your six feet under, and lets face it, it is not our money. The ticket prices are no different with our spending now, than if we didn't spend a penny. Or should we just do an Arsenal and sit on a big pot of money?

Always worth showing caution in these circumstances, and spending the sort of money we did at the start of *last* season having not yet banked any of the lucrative Premier League cash was mildly terrifying, but having got through last season unscathed, with the wage bill appearing to be under pretty good control and with the massive increase in guaranteed revenue this season, I'm satisfied we're in very good shape financially.

I'm sure that'll be of relief to everyone :toppa:

Seriously, absolutely no issue asking questions - it's when questions aren't asked by anyone that problems start arising. Just look down the road, they're getting excited about beating Morecambe and one of the reasons for that is that nobody started asking questions about sustainability until it was too late. Our situations are, of course, massively different - we've got our own assets for a start, we've signed players on what appear to be affordable wages and we've benefited from the new broadcasting deal to facilitate a lot of the spending.

It didn't bankroll both did it? Chamberlain was sold after our first promotion. Point is that Glasgow was suggesting we haven't received any significant transfer fees in the two years, I was saying that we have.

Whats the difference in saying it covered back-to-back promotions or that it amounted to our outlay on Ramirez? All comes from the same pot and hardly meant to suggest we kept the Chamberlain money locked away in a vault, ready to splurge on Gaston. We were on topic of transfers in/out and the fees involved in both Ramirez and Chamberlain deals were similar. It's hardly a massive leap.
