NC, his decisions and our amazing academy

I reserve the right to change my mind on a whim...

but at present I am of the opinion that NC is an incredible man that we are very very lucky to have at our club.

For me, the presentation 'style' of some of the more ruthless decisions needs work - he's often made himself look like the bad guy when it could have been handled more sensitively imo (e.g. sackings, programme sellers, MLT issues etc). But lets take style out of the equation and look at the substance of the decisions:

- sacking Pardew and bringing in NA. We may never know all of the background, but NA brought back to back promotions. Would Pardew have managed it? Maybe. But it certainly wasn't a bad decision.

- the Five Year Plan vision. No doubt in my mind that this was a success and also helped attract better players

- sacking NA. Tough. I was outraged at the time. Would I swap Poch for NA now? No.

- investing in the academy. No doubt in my mind that this is a USP for the club and an excellent strategy financially.

- signings. Ok - SDR and Forren didn't really work out, but many have been great and I personally feel that the balance of quality purchases combined with academy products is both prudent and effective.

- the 'lets get into Europe' vision. Seemed over ambitious when it was announced, but if we want to attract players that are a real step up on what we have, and if we want to actually WIN something, then I reckon this vision is something that might help turn their heads (short of actually being able to offer European football)

What do you reckon?

He knows what he's doing, and is surrounding himself with people who also know what they're doing. There is a plan and it's being executed to undoubted perfection.

Money will help, but as we've seen with QPR - there needs to be a plan and a structure, otherwise you're throwing empty notes around.

Our transfer policy can't really be bettered in terms of what we're trying to do.

I posted this on another thread, but last year was all about young talent. This year is all about proven players. They're not in it to rush and bulldoze their way through it, they do it in their way in their own time and to their own structure.

Whatever happens, this club is in one of it's best places in recent times.

His managerial appointments have been spot on so far. I spose that's the main thing you ask of chairman. Pardew was v.good at building a squad, Adkins made then into a team and Ponch looks like taking things on to next level.

Does this mean Fergie will come out of retirement to take us the final step of the journey?

Maybe he only handed over to Moyes to clear the way for his move down South (after a suitable pause to throw people off the scent )

Wanyama and Lovren just turned 22 and 24 respectively - the emphasis is still on youth.

oh - and someone on Twitter just posted this. Under 10's. JWP, Chambo and Shaw all in this team. Can you spot them all? https://twitter.com/scottchamb1966/status/369125152161665025/photo/1

JWP sticks out like a sore thumb, because he still looks like he is 10! (Unless I'm wrong, that's him back row, third from the left.) Not sure on the others, though I think Luke could be front row second from the right. Chambers not a clue! Front row second from the left?

But proven youth, is what I'm trying to get at.

Compared to last year - Rodriguez, Mayuka, Gaston, Clyne - very much unproven young players, with huge potential.

You'd have to say that Lovren and Wanyama are still young, but they're up a ''notch'' as they're proven players at the top level.

Very much. We're moving for players who the big guns look at, but don't think at good enough for them just yet.

(Which means they are very much going to be good enough for us).

Little bit like what Spurs did back in the day with Carrick etc.

Agree though it probably has more to do with the fact that we are a more established prem side and can attract better, younger players than a change in philosophy.

Osvaldo is an exception -and raises interesting questions whether he are going to sign more players of his ilk and experience. Saying that we did sign Steven Davis last season who was older than Osvaldo when he joined.

Thought Chambers was most obvious...back row first kid on the right. Luke is second from bottom left, JWP left of the keeper.

Okay Nicola you've finally sold me IT ACTUALLY IS HAPPENING ISN'T IT!

But not a scattergun approach as said already it appears to be structured with a definite plan.

Also leaving room for our youngsters to still have the chance to prove themselves with the club. As proved yesterday with four home grown players starting. Exciting times never thought I'd see days like this.

Meh 1 out of 3. These kids are freaks though - I still look exactly as I did when I was 9!

If ever there was a day and a signing that fully justified why Cortese replaced Adkins for Pochettino, then this is it. There is no way that Adkins would have brought in the likes of Osvaldo.

As much as I am grateful to Adkins for bringing us to the Premiership, today would not have happened without Pochettino being here having been his manager at Espanyol. Now that Osvaldo has been signed, his signing can only strengthen our value in future transfer windows.
