Calum Chambers

What's the consensus on this lad then? First time I've seen him and thought he looked very solid cover for Clyne. WBA tried to target him a little but he defended sensibly and looked calm on the ball. Is this another one off the production line?

If we have 2nd choice like that in every position we have a marvelous future...

Absolutely. I thought he played very well. A couple of dodgy moments but overall I'd be happy with hearing his name on the team sheet. He will only get better.

Very assured. Didn't look like he was making his league debut - a proper compliment.

Still Clyne is the man and we missed his attacking play. Shaw and Clyne are terrific outlets -and there were times when the game was crying out for Chambers/JWP to attack the space in front of them.

I can only see one obvious weakness in his game, which was evident against RS and WBA; diagonal balls over the top and in behind him.

That's a common thing for players relatively new to the fullback position. When the ball is on the opposite side they instinctively gravitate into the middle where they are maybe more used to playing.

Turnbull is a couple of injuries away from making the bench as well. Wouldn't be shocked to see him overtake Hooiveld with the latter being sold in january.

I've not seen much of him, I always assumed Jack Stephens was the next defender to break into the side

Looks very good indeed when you consider his age and lack of experience. Composed, good understanding with team mates, normally finds a decent ball and good in the air as well, which is rare for a full back. Doesn't get forward much but you'd expect that from a lad his age. Good competition for Clyne, more than a back-up.

We've seen a lot of nippers make debuts for Saints.

IMHO a large percentage of the ones I have seen have tended to look a bit like a fish out of water as the game went on around them. They may have done nothing wrong but they weren't totally integrated & involved. The goods ones showed promise, even AL's debut looked a bit early (and we then sent him on loan) can only really remember Shearer as being an eye opener

But Chambers yesterday was simply a well oiled cog in the machine.

The minor critique that he did not get forward as well as Clyne but then FFS we WERE away from home and we've all watched away games over the years where our Strikers have hardly got over the half way line away :)

Very assured, very confident, comfortable on the ball and very promising

Oh and it was really good to see JWP really INVOLVED yesterday, seemed he had stepped up a level in decision making and was starting to create rather than doing simple things well. (Pre match the talk was more that JWP had never really stamped his Authority on any games last year - had looked good/solid but had not seemed a "game changer" - that opinion was changed yesterday f'sure)

Think we are gonna learn to love the Johny Wilkinson thing as the season progresses.....

I thought the boy can hold is head very high indeed. Thought he looked tired towards the end and seemed to lose a bit of composure on the ball. He started to hack it away. (Not necessarily a bad thing though.) worked for Ken monkou. Well Mr Chambers. Look forward to watch your career grow.

Hes good enough to play week in week out in the championship, to be that good at 18, means by 20-21 he will be prem class if he develops well, its unfortunate for him, that Clyne is only 3 and a half years older and is going to be one of the best RB in the prem, which will leave us in a dilemma in 2 years as both will want to play every week.

Err bit confused by this, as the manager believes he's good enough to play in the Premiership.

I will go with the Manager on this one.

I saw similarities with Shaw in his first games last year where he was protected by the players around him and basically keeping things simple, especially against a West Brom side with a combined millennia of footballing experience by comparison. I thought it said a lot that JWP was given the responsibility of playing in front of him and considering WBA targeted Chanbers side for 95% of the game the pair of them coped superbly.

i am looking forward to when he is let off the novice leash, as for a big lad he does have a turn of speed and the ability to play in a great ball either from on the move or from a free kick.

Pleased for the lad, going on tour pre season seems to have even a good investment by the club.

I think Chambers actually had a better Prem debut than Shaw had.

In the first half he was concentrating on the simple things and barely if ever crossed the half way line - fair enough for a young 'un. But as his confidence grew he started overlapping JWP and then it was even more difficult for the opposition. He and JWP looked very comfortable together - and effective too, I reckoned.

Give him another 20 games and hopefully he'll be forging into the box and create penalty situations in the 89th minute?

Thought we needed desperate cover for Clyne at RB a month or so ago, now there's no need what so ever.

All we now need is a striker, and we're done, and have one of the strongest ever PL squads we've had in my lifetime.

I love how we were supposedly eyeing up the Malaga captain for £6m, but instead just produced a right back for free :)
