Thoroughly deserved three points.

Ironically, Ricky is the hero after a very below par performance....But who cares.

MP has stamped his style all over this team. We dictate the tempo of the game. End of.

MS is one of the best players I have ever seen wear the shirt. You wont see it in the papers, or the player scores, but that was a 10 out of 10 performance..... didn't put a foot wrong all day and covered very blade of grass at least 20 times. Incredible.

JWP - Take a bow.

Wanyama is a ****ing tank

Gaston wont last long with performances like that .......12 million quid regardless.

Chambers must be buzzing.......4 homegrown players on the pitch. Southampton Football Club, take a bow.

Boruc. Awful distribution and then when it really mattered a truly world class save...Gordon Banks style.

Welcome back Adam - Top draw.

Maybe one has to give Gaston the benefit of the doubt, as he has racked up the air miles this summer (this week).

I thought he looked a nuisance (on the admittedly sporadic) stream I was watching. Couple of mis-placed passes trying to be too clever when a simple ball was on and would have sufficed but generally a threat.

Gemmel must have been stood next to me.

In addition Lovren put in a very good shift.

Wanyama was very impressive, great to see Lallana not playing in the style of Febrice Fernandes, which he was falling into the habit of last season. Chambers did not look out of place, JWP looked excellent especially his dead balls right into the mix and his rasping shot to sting the hands of Foster was deserving of a goal. Shaw was as always assured.

I thought we looked very tidy and only the stubborn defending and goal keeping of Foster kept things tight. Having watched Saints for donkeys yonks and knowing what a bit of an uncharitable team WBA seem to be when we play them, when the ball was pinging round our box you felt a spawny goal was highly possible but the boys did the business.

WBA got their second half impetus stoked very nicely by referee Friend as he gave a raft of strange decisions to the Baggies, the lad who brought down Shaw for the pen was actually very luck to be on the pitch on 90 mins as he was booked for spiking the ball at a decision against them, he had another moment where having felt he was fouled literally picked the ball up with both hands then instantly remembered to play to the whistle and very quickly let go of it and carried on playing, then the pen, without doubt there are refs who would have brandished a yellow at that tackle,

the only time we looked a little out of sorts was when Steven and Gaston came on just for a few minutes we seemed to lose out shape in midfield. Gaston will be getting a word in his ear soon as pound for pound Wanyama already looks vastly better value in my eyes, that said Gaston had the Olympics last summer then the confederations cup this summer so like Yoshida that really has to take its toll on what is still a very ypung man.

All in all a very nice day out, something to note off the field was how pleasant the away concourse was, Saints could take a leaf out of their book on that as the dowdy bare concrete of our concourse at SMS is pretty depressing by comparison.

Nice one Saints

Below par performance from Lambert? To be honest I think he did okay, plenty of good movement but couldn't get on the ball too much because we kept overshooting passes, and Olsson/McAuley are very strong against him.

After seeing Coutinho's performance today, there is no reason whatsoever for Gaston to not perform this season, all that settling in bullsh1t is over now he really has to up his game and start performing

Why why why why why does everyone see fit to use Philippe Coutinho as a benchmark for all foreign players coming into the country? He has quite clearly hit the ground running, but it is quite remarkable how he has done so. Like a lot of other players, Ramirez hasn't. Come back when most young foreigners settle in and start running games right away.

Though I do agree this is a big season for him, and he does need to improve, the reason is not that that's what Coutinho's doing.

Wanyama and MS must scare the sh1t out of opposition players. Probably the 2 best break up players in the league....stood next to each other. It's not really fair on the other team!

...and yes Big Vic is an absolute tank. Challenges flying in and people bouncing off him like running into a wall. Also had a couple of nice bits of skill and some forward drive.

Lovren looked very good too. Superb challenge towards the end.

Chambers looked decent but Clyne is a top player do can't wait for him to come back.

A bit of Osvaldo cutting edge in the final third and we have a fantastic, exciting team on our hands.

Great day. First half we were very much the better team, dictated the play & tempo of the game. We looked very well organised & disciplined. The full backs got forward well, Shaw in particular. Wanyama is an absolute beast, Mulumbu is no slouch but he just brushed him and the rest of their midfield with ease every time.

The game became a bit scrappy in the 2nd half, and they had a bit more of the ball. Lovren (I think, could have been Fonte) made an absolutely world class tackle on Anelka to stop him going through on goal, had he got it wrong then it was a penalty and probable red card, so he timed it perfectly.

Rickie wasn't having a great game, I was actually advocating taking him off and playing J Rod up top with Ramirez behind. Wouldn't have wanted any other player in world football taking that penalty though, Foster goes the right way but if he'd gone anything on it he'd probably have broken a finger.

Still some fine tuning to be done, especially in the final 3rd where I thought we were lacking ideas quite a bit (this has been a problem since about 6 games to go last season), the signing of Osvaldo should help sort that out. Overall, a positive start but we weren't at our best and can & will get better as the season starts to take shape. If we want to finish in the top half or higher, then we need to be going to places like West Brom and picking up scrappy, hard fought wins like that.

I use Coutinho as a example because they are both similar in age, from Seria A,south American and play in the same position.

He did hit the ground running and that was fortunate for Liverpool but Gaston pretty much had a whole season to adjust and even though he was good in some games he was pretty crap in others.

I am pro Gaston and I would love him to succeed, and I have said on here many times I don't think him nd Rickie gel that well because of Rickes style,a J-Rod or Osvaldo would suit his game someone who will run on the last man to be fed those through balls.

All that's missing from his game is consistency

i wasn't at the game but watched the extended highlights on Sky. Some of RL play was sublime and still fans do not see his finer points

I thought JWP and Chambers had a fantastic game on the left hand side - they looked like they had been in the team for ages the way they played - full credit to them and the contribution they made.

We bossed the game in the first half and the Baggies responded in the 2H but only created 3 good chances (from memory - the Boruc save, the last minute tackle from Fonte and the fluffed chance from the low level cross).

Some strange decisions from the ref almost ruined what was a good game of footie.

My only crticism of Saints was the kicking of Boruc (especialy when compared to Foster, who started soem good counter attacks with accurate down field kicks), and the lack of impact when Ramirez came on - why not Puncheon???

A great away win with no yellow cards!

The new one for wanyama is to the tune of Monster...

What's that comin over the hill? Is it wanyama? Is it Wanyama?

Like this, hope it catches on.

Game was good, agree with everyone else although not many people have mentioned Lallana, who I thought looked like the quality player we know he can be again. He showed some brilliant skill to craft openings for himself and others, very quickly into the game the oppo players were having to double up to keep him quiet which made room in other areas of the pitch.

Felt jays running and positions wasn't as effective as usual but I liked the fact he doesn't get deterred and tries to work opportunities from start to finish.

Gaston, sorry but I couldn't see the positive impact of him coming on it seemed to me that he gave the ball away too much and his passing accuracy was poor again, which is sad to see. Think guly would have done as good if not better.

New lads phenomenal. The quiet doubts I had about Lovren were dispelled and Wanyama is a monster and some of his play working with Spider in the centre was the best you'll see in the prem.

Lambert involved subtly in most of our forward play as ever, great pen i shouldn't have doubted him on scoring it (the old pessimistic saint in me).

Chambers is good but needs to learn to watch how far he drifts in the same problem as against RS. Shaw... Could he possibly be as good as Bale over the next 5 years, starting to see glimpses of it already.

JWP has one hell of a free kick on him. Not completely sure he is our answer to playmaking but undoubtedly prem quality at his age already.

Boruc saves.

Was in the WBA hospitality area as i had a freebie tickets, was worried that i wouldn't be able to contain myself when we scored but was relieved the 4 guys behind me were Saints supporters as well! Btw there were a fair few Saints supports in the WBA hospitality lounge.
