Which is exactly what everyone said when we played Wigan at home at the start of last season.

That turned out well...........

We should be mindfull of this happening but I think the way MP has got the side set up we should be looking at a home win, I have gone for the good old 3-1.

Actually Sunderland played good football against Fulham. They deserved a better result but were a bit like us last year, much possession but little end-product.

Personally I think Osvaldo will start but if not he will get at least 30 minutes, no question about that in my mind. He is fit and played 90 mins 5 days ago and with a whole week of training sessions he will have a good chance to be included in the starting XI.

Our team for this fixture last term:

Davis

Clyne Yoshida Fonte Shaw

Cork Schneiderlin

Ramirez Puncheon

Lambert

Mayuka

Subs: Boruc, Hooiveld, Richardson, S Davis, Guly, De Ridder, Rodriguez

Things are looking brighter now!

Indeed, you only have to read the first line of the team to know that. Davis gifted them the match because he's err sh*te.

I think the good thing about SUnderland under Di Canio is they will come out and try to win the game, can't see them set up playing for the draw, that should suit us.

Agreed, he will see this as a game where they can go home with the points. Should be a brilliant game. Could be a thriller. 4-3 or something.

Over 3,000 tickets available for Saturday, 900 or so of those are available in block 43 in the Northam. Why do the club never tell people that area has been opened up to home fans?! The win at WBA & Osvaldo signing should see a few more shifted this week + walk up on Saturday should see it creep over 30K, depends how many Sunderland have sold mind.

Surprised so many are still available with less than a week to go though, poor effort.

Starting 11 v Sunderland? Osvaldo start seems unlikely, but perhaps? SRL in behind him?

I'd say that but swap Lambert and Osvaldo. From what I've seen Osvaldo is brilliant facing goal rather than with his back to it. I bet they'll be working on getting it into Lambert's feet and using runners going past him. That really is a scary front 4 to face as a defender with Lambert, Jay Rod's directness, Lallana's tricks and Osvaldo's right hook playing off him.

Changes to last week's winning team - Chambers and Fonte were probably standing in for Clyne and Yoshida so I'd expect those two changes and its then a case of how to accommodate Osvaldo if he is considered match fit. JWP was very influential in midfield at West Brom so my guess would be JRod to drop to the bench.

Its great to have so many options in the forward positions. Sunderland won't have a clue what to expect. Wouldn't be surprised to see the same team that won at WBA start, and then Ramirez, Osvaldo and Puncheon to come off the bench.

I would be tempted to start with

------------Boruc------------

Clyne---Fonte--Lovren---Shaw

-----Morgan-----Wanyama-----

J-Rod------Osvaldo-----Lallana

-----------Lambert-----------

Will be exciting seeing that side though. Unfortunately I'm not in the country this weekend so I'll be missing it !!

Might be a struggle for Puncheon to even make the bench, considering he didn't make it against WBA and we've now added another forward to the squad.

Fair point, great to have such options though.

To have Lallana, J-Rod, Ramirez, Puncheon, Guly, Osvaldo, JWP, Davis, Lambert, Mayuka, Isgrove all fighting it out for 4 places in the team, it's going to be tough to keep them all happy!

Exactly. I can see now why we need to splash out on Scott Sinclair.

I can't see beyond:

---------------Boruc-----------------

---Clyne---Fonte---Lovren---Shaw---

--------Spider----Wanyama--------

-----J Rod---Lambert---Lallana----

-------------Osvaldo--------------

Gaston to come on after ~70 minutes, replacing Lambert. JWP poss on for J Rod and/or Davis on for Lallana if we need to protect the lead.

I suspect that the front four formation will be very fluid - Lambert and Osvaldo will probably interchange, but always with one deeper one more advanced.

Those people putting Gaston in the formation playing wide... a question for you - have you seen the system we play and/or Gaston play? Putting him in a wider position would expose the full back and make poor use of his strengths. He's a number 10 and currently unfit.

An interesting question - if I'm right that JWP will be dropped, who will take our set pieces? Lallana's delivery is often poor. Gaston seems hit and miss, plus I doubt he'll start. Is it out of the q'n that Lallana might be dropped to keep JWP in the team for his set piece delivery?

Goodness - Sunderland have given up coke and caffeine....

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/aug/16/paolo-di-canio-sunderland-revolution

The media keeps on trumpeting Di Canio's team as the 'fittest' in the League because of the double sessions he's introduced.

They hardly ever mention that Poch has done exactly the same, and with a team that was pretty damn fit anyway.

I hope we absolutely batter Sunderland on Saturday, can't stand Di Canio - horrible, vile man.

I think we will score 3 or 4. They got new players just learning how di canio wants them to play whilst ours already know how to play by now. We are not only rock solid but full of power purpose and goal threat. They will go ott in physically trying to shut us down - so i can see plenty yellows for them and maybe a red. They will play for a draw as a good result whilst we will be playing to win and if itys a draw that's a disappointment. Can only see one winner here in normal circumstances. 70% saints win 20% draw 10% safc win.

I can't see them playing for a draw. They've invested in forwards and will use them I reckon.

------Boruc

Clyne-Yoshida-Lovren-Shaw

-------Cork

Schneiderlin-Wanyama

------Gaston

----Ricky-Ossie

Onus on the full backs to provide the width with Cork supplying defensive cover.

Sunderland are going to be tough opponents, thought they looked OK against Fulham and Altidore looks like he might be a handful.

Going for 3-1 to us but wouldn't be surprised if Sunderland poop on the party.

No way will they play for a draw! Have you seen their fixture list? This is an absolute must win for them. They'll view it like a cup final.

Thing is, our lot are full of confidence and belief, are far more organised and will be desperate to win their first game of the season at home. Plus Osvaldo will be determined to score, as will Rickie.

I'm going for 4-3 to us and plenty of cards for both sides!

No chance will we go with this. We didn't play three DMs at a tough place like WBA, why would we do it at home against a relatively weak side?

I'll go with a clean sheet for us, we looked very solid last week.

A 1-0 or 2-0 win would be absolutely fine, I'm going for 2-0, J Rod and SRL.

Haven't got a clue about the team but a sneaky feeling JWP has done enough to stay in the starting X1 this week.

Happy days (we're not going unfortunately, on flipping wedding duty with a bunch of Brighton and Cov fans, also a couple of Saints ST's there who will be gutted to be missing it).

Snderland were probably the best side defensively at St Mary's last season. Cuellar especially didn't give Lambert a sniff. Hopefully it's different this time around.

Being a cautious optimist, I'll go for a 2-1 win.

Fonte and Lambert again to score. Osvaldo to get 20 minutes at the end and set-up the winner.
