Stepgar Posted 17 August, 2013 Share Posted 17 August, 2013 After the win against West Brom we really need to play well and bring home the points on this one. This is a really good time to play Sunderland as they are still very much adjusting to the influx of players. No complacency please Saints. I think we should be winning this one. eurosaint Posted 17 August, 2013 Share Posted 17 August, 2013 From Mopo's aftermatch comments I reckon that Clyne will replace Chambers (need to carefully manage the young lad!), the rest could be the same as today but maybe Punch and Yoshida will get back on the bench, will be an interesting team selection though for the first and definitely winnable home game !! DuncanRG Posted 17 August, 2013 Share Posted 17 August, 2013 Let's hope for a big improvement on the fixture last season. This is an entirely different team to the Sunderland we saw last season though, so we'll have to be very thorough in our preparations. I hear some of their new signings looked very sharp today. BlakeySFC Posted 17 August, 2013 Share Posted 17 August, 2013 Did last season's home game against Sunderland teach us nothing? We all got ahead of ourselves, said '3-0 easy' '5-0 should be a walk in the park' etc. and they beat us 1-0, don't underestimate Sunderland. They're a very good side, and have bought in alot of decent players this Summer. Can't see us winning this, draw at best.

Lighthouse Posted 17 August, 2013 Share Posted 17 August, 2013 I don't think you could ask for a better fixture at the moment. Sunderland have clearly had a big upheaval of the summer and I am yet to be convinced PDC is a PL manager. I'm not taking anything for granted, we're perfectly capable of shafting ourselves with a hopeless performance without warning. However the team I saw today looked seriously good against a well organised WBA side. I would probably play the same team with Clyne coming in only if fit, no disrespect to Chambers who looked decent today. LTTANO

They're not a very good side - they are worse than us and almost got relegated last season. We should expect to beat them at home, though expecting a drubbing is silly even for fans of the top teams. LTTANO Mostly agree, but I think Fonte was playing at West Brom as cover for Yoshida being jet-lagged and that Chambers was covering for Clyne, who despite being on the bench was known to be coming back from injury. JWP and JRod both played well that I can't see a reason for starting Ramirez or Stephen Davis ahead of them, but both likely to come off the bench as against WBA. So I'm expecting 2 changes that would marginally strengthen the defence and the attack. Anything can happen in football, remember QPR last season, but this really looks like another Saints win and a move up the embryonic table. saints_is_the_south Posted 18 August, 2013 Share Posted 18 August, 2013 Sunderland didn't look too bad against Fulham in the highlights I've just seen, certainly had plenty of attempts on goal. Probably a good time to play them whilst their new recruits are still all bedding in. Won't be easy, they'll be full of energy and we'll have to match that, if we do and maintain the same resilience as we showed yesterday, then we should put another 3 points in the board. Another hard fought win, I'm going Saints 2-0 Sunderland.
sammysaint Posted 18 August, 2013 Share Posted 18 August, 2013 Great chance for us to get 6 points in two games and have more then 10% of our point target in 2 games, however i feel knowing us were probs buckle under expectation and draw, i feel Sunderland are like we were last season, great attack but shocking defence, and now even worse after losing a world class keeper. If we keep fletcher quiet were win if not there will be goals from both teams, 2-1 Saints or 2-2.

dan abnormal Posted 18 August, 2013 Share Posted 18 August, 2013 Fulham scored with almost there only shot on target, smash and grab result for them. Sunderland by far the better team without creating many clear cut chances. Altidore, Giaccherini and Cabral all played well apparently. Their weak at fullback, would be good to get Shaw and Clyne running at them.
Lighthouse Posted 18 August, 2013 Share Posted 18 August, 2013 How do our predictions actually impact the game??? Plus, it's a different Sunderland side, manager etc. They have some ok players but they're not a team yet. There for the taking IF we play well. I wouldn't bother talking to him if I were you. He posted, 'there is no way we're going to win this' before literally every game last season. One of the lazier trolls on this board. At least alpine puts his heart and soul into trolling. Wiggles31 Posted 18 August, 2013 Share Posted 18 August, 2013 Fancy a home win for this one. Exactly the type of games we should be winning which was something that did not always go to plan last year. Another win and we can really hit the ground running. Think they'll be trying to settle down with all their new players so we're playing them at a great time. Altidore looks much better than when he was at Hull. dubai_phil Posted 18 August, 2013 Share Posted 18 August, 2013 Interesting one. JWP or Lallana to be dropped? Or JRod? Think JRod is a confidence player who gets better the more games he plays and offers us that pace and ability to run slightly more than AL & JWP. Clyne for Chambers is a maybe but missing a lot of pre-season maybe more likely to get a 20 min run out. Lighthouse Posted 18 August, 2013 Share Posted 18 August, 2013 I'd have thought he will start on the bench too. The last players we signed during the season (aside from Forren) were Yoshi and Gaston. saints_is_the_south Posted 18 August, 2013 Share Posted 18 August, 2013 Osvaldo has played 205 minutes for Roma in pre season. His last outing was 69 minutes against Chelsea on 11th August, so by the time we play Sunderland he'd have gone 2 weeks without any match practice. Would not be surprised to see him named on the bench for this one.
SaintBobby Posted 18 August, 2013 Share Posted 18 August, 2013 Is there really a question that Oswaldo might not be match fit? Shame if so, but starting with new players from the bench seems to be the done thign these days.

Still, I don't expect he'll be up to MP's fitness standards so it may take a few weeks for him to get to that level. I'd start him on the bench Saturday, and maybe give him a run out at Barnsley on Tuesday.

Brave Sir Robin Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 I'll be suprised if Osvaldo starts. He needs time to get to know the rest of the team and learn the intricacies of the system. There's a lot more to being a competitive EPL team than just fielding a load of individually talented players and expecting them to gel straight away. That's why we've handled the transfer window the way we have, it's why this is the perfect time to play Blunderland, and it's the reason they'll be struggling for survival all season in the hope that a late surge in the spring once their players have finally settled will be enough to escape the drop. Anything other than an absolute hiding from us, with Osvaldo getting a nice 10 minute run out at the end, once we're safely 3 or 4 goals up, is unthinkable! COYR! Brave Sir Robin Posted 19 August, 2013 Share Posted 19 August, 2013 they too have signed an italian international who did very well in the confederations cup (where osvlado wasnt) dont write them off too soon Yes but any advantage they might gain by signing a decent player is immediately undone by handing them over to be "managed" by Di Canio! Of course we should write them off! Any suggestion that we might not beat them on Saturday is bordering on insulting!
