Wanyama is an absolute beast. Should anything get through him, which would take a tank, then Lovren will probably be there to mop it up. WBA will be ok this season but if we were still there now they wouldn't have scored.

The colour/design of the tie depends on the choice of shirt far more than that of the suit.

Further, a tie is more than simply an article of clothing - it tells others about your self; regiment, university, business association, golf/yacht club - that kind of thing.

In this case, a Saints necktie, beit the crest or stripes or whatever, would be essential.

So, a gold tie it is then?

Have to say was surprised Punch didn't get in the team esp given how well he did end of last season and in pre season, perhaps MoPo sees him as more of a threat at home. I guess with the pressing game it's good to rotate players in there. You could swap in Punch, gaston and Davis next week and not lose anything. Nice problem to have

Oh and randomly we had a new member today. Used to go to school with JWP. Ah bless

The soppy sod was actually a Skate - God knows why he came and stood near us!!

Maybe he thought we'd buy him a drink based on him being a school buddy of JWP - nice try!!

The drunk Geordie was class!! Not only did the RLSGM lyrics prove too difficult for him, but also the concept of SRL not wearing a # 9 shirt.

a great all round team effort, great result ... happy days.

Got back from Birmingham around an hour ago.

Absolutely buzzing about this performance and now so excited for the rest of the season.

Key Highlights

Just how good is Lovren? I thought he was absolutely outstanding and a huge upgrade to our defence. A real coup to get him judging on that performance.

Wanyama - so good that I didn't really notice Morgan was playing (which is a huge compliment given just how good he was last season).

Absolutely made up that Rickie scored again today - must literally be the best week of his life? What an absolute SFC legend.

Delighted that we had 3 18 year olds in the starting XI - Shaw is just superb, Chambers very solid and JWP was a big big improvement on last season.

The future looks bright...

Hmm maybe Pochettino should be a choice to vote for after the games....?

I thought today showed how solid he might have made us during the summer, looked very drilled and you could the CB´s working together and covering each other....(yes early to judge but dont remember many games last year with the ssame sort of solidness)

We need to create more chances and get more shots on target.... For all our possesion we didnt really test their keeper and didnt look like scoring until the penalty. Same story last season

Said we would struggle to score goals this season and stand by that even after todays game.

Cant rely on penalties and worldy saves from Boruc every week

Great result completely ruined by the bloke next to me taking pictures on his tablet. The image of our away support has now been forever tarnished. I'd rather have that old woman knitting in the back row at Carrow Road than gimps like him.

Guess which Saints player is in the MOTD Team of the Week...?

You were probably wrong...

3. Jose Fonte (Southampton) made 14 clearances, the joint-most today, as well as a league-high five interceptions.

Great, unexpected win! A wonderful 3 points to have on the board already - and the first game of the season to boot! Sadly I couldn't watch the game today as I was at a mate's barbecue but I was following it on Twitter and the Beeb. I went mental when Rickie scored the penalty!

All in all from what I've heard on here about the players, we're in for a promising season. Let's hope we can bring in the one or two more players we want and push on for the title!

Good result today, we dominated most of the game, struggled a bit for clear chances. The goal should have been disallowed. Rodriguez was distracting the keeper after having been offside, wish the linesman had missed it though.

Wannayana looked good but there were a few moments were he wasn't on the same wavelength as his teamates but that will come with game time. JWP is so much better at corners than what we had last year, we might get a few goals from these this year. Defence looked good but were not significantly tested by WBA for most of the game, but did the job when needed. Borucs save was as important as Rickeys penalty today.

My stand out was JWP.

Best signing of the summer was my new sofa and larger TV which made the experiende awesome.

OK the morning after thoughts.

The lack of goals from the front 4 is not such a big issue as it appears. During the game we noticed a tendency for crosses into the box to be very "Floaty".

Not so much corners & free kicks (which were an upgrade on last year but still say 10% short of a real fizzing delivery)

Now whether the floaty ness was down to players not actually being in position when the ball was about to be played in or down to poor technique would need another watch of the game.

But there were a number of times when JR SRL were hurtling into position and a gentle chip is wafted in there general direction which is a really easy ball for a defender to clear.

It's a minor adjustment to our build up play and I have no idea if it is lack of quality or lack of confidence or lack of positioning from the strikers.

Maybe it's JP's fault that there were too many floaters about yesterday.

Anyway a really minor point we picked up on through 4 pints of Pedigree.

On the subject of Gaston thought he seemed just a little behind the pace (which maybe no bad thing as last season at times I thought he seemed half a yard thought - wise ahead of the rest of our team). Considering he was a couple of weeks behind the rest of the lads with pre-season (thanks to the money grabbing suits at FIFA) and had just flown 10,000 meaningless miles I'm not concerned, we looked really good without him and he will soon catch up and hopefully improve us.

We are learning to love JRod's little trick - his ability to play a one -two off a defender - the number of times when he has run into a channel and has little support that he manages to win us a throw in in the attacking 3rd is amazing. He did it as well a couple of times around the box to make a half yard of space, seen it in a lot of games now and it seems to be a deliberate technique with the underside of his foot.

Chambers block to stop WBA scoring was as sensational as Boruc's save.

Once Fonte realises that Morgan is our Hollywood passer and stops with the attempts even he'll be hard to drop.

Great performance yesterday, never could it have been deemed scrappy.

Oh and the new shirt? Still looks awful up close. Our new mate from Doha Saints had one on. "It's growing on him" hmmm.

Could be the only downer of what could be an exciting season!

We were the away team looked solid and dominated possession! lets judge the creativity and number of chances in the home matches! (we did have more chances and shots than the home team and they were a good solid side last year who walked all over us twice)

399 Completed Passes vs 364 for WBA

77.9% Passing Accuracy

33 Crosses (Note 33 crosses in 90 minutes - not making any chances ROFL)

18.2% of Crosses were successful.

So there is an area to work on improving

Total Shots 8 v 11 to them

Our shot accuracy? 80%

8 corners to 4 for them

From the BBC:

A disappointing game

.. a scrappy encounter

... a poor advert for the top flight.

I have Saints spectacles on, but it wasn't that bad was it?

No it wasn't. The game was, overall, lacking in clear goalscoring chances from both teams, but it wasn't a scrappy, untidy game by any means.

Well, what a game that was yesterday! Like most have said, first half was pretty much all Saints and we could've been 1 or 2 up at the break (had we been a little more incisive). Second half a much more even affair, although both defences did their jobs very well in order to limit the strikers. Game was definitely played in the midfield and Rickie was getting a little frustrated that he wasn't getting enough service - made lots of runs into the channels and pulled his markers all over the place but we didn't seem to want to play the ball into the final third without having bodies in there.

Boruc 7

Didn't have a huge amount of work to do most of the day, but was there when he needed to be. Pulled off some very good saves, and his stop at the end was absolutely world class. Also looked very confident and claimed the ball well from crosses and set-pieces. Best keeper we've had since Niemi imo, and to be honest he's not far off that level either! Hope he sticks around for a while yet.

Chambers 7

Pretty settled for his debut, wasn't expecting great shakes from him considering it was his first game for us but he didn't look out of place. I watched him quite closely throughout pre-season after it was revealed that Clyne was carrying an injury, and he looks a very good player. Just needs to be more confident when taking his man on like Luke, and maybe a little work on positioning but otherwise a very encouraging start!

Shaw 9

Christ, is he really 18? Can't remember the last time I saw an 18 year old look the best player on the pitch in a Premier League game. Was our main threat down the left as the wingers would tuck in when he got down the wing. Not afraid to try and beat his man and always seems to know what to do when he's on the ball. He's going to be absolutely world class.

Fonte 8

Was hoping to see Yoshida partnering Lovren yesterday, but Jose didn't disappoint at all. He was one half of an extremely composed centre-back performance. Stayed tight to his man without being dragged around, and was always out quickly to shut down the opponent when they came into his space. Showed some nice passing as well. Can't say he'd be my first choice in defence, but he certainly made a good case for another start next week against Sunderland.

Lovren 8

Very impressed with Dejan. Wasn't expecting him to be so good on the deck, but he put in some very good tackles and his positional sense was excellent. Seems kinda like a cross between Jose and Jos in his playing style, composed but also quite dominant. Didn't look like he was overly happy with playing on the left side of the two but did his job well. Anelka could have been a tricky customer yesterday but Dejan made him look like nothing special. Excited to see more from him in the coming weeks.

Wanyama 9 (MOTM)

Bloody hell. Probably one of the best debuts i've seen in my time as a Saints fan! He was absolutely everywhere in that midfield, making tackles left right and centre and players were literally hanging off him trying to get the ball from him. When people talked about us needing a "midfield enforcer" in the past, I don't think they imagined he would be this good.. Whether he can keep up this level of performance obviously remains to be seen, but I don't think yesterday could have gone much better for him.

Schneiderlin 8

Did exactly what you would expect him to do. Put himself around, made some excellent tackles and interceptions and was always there to offer an option. Also seems to have gained an extra yard of pace since last season, at least over a short distance. In a game that was dictated primarily in the middle of the park, Morgan was very composed, controlled and creative. Looking forward to seeing more of him and Big Vic!

Ward-Prowse 7

Prowsey had a good game I think. Was surprised to see him on the team sheet ahead of Punch or Guly, but he earned his place. His energy and work rate were excellent, and he put in some good deliveries from set-pieces which unfortunately we didn't capitalise on. Still seems that we haven't quite worked out his best position, but he did well as a wide midfielder in a 3, and he offered good support to his full backs when needed. Honourable mention for producing a stinger out of nowhere in the first half which really tested Foster!

Lallana 7

Decent performance from Adam. He was all over the final third, always trying to find a little gap to exploit or some space to run into. If we'd had controlled WBA's half more then he probably could have nabbed a goal, but some good defensive work from them meant he had to drop deep quite a lot to pick up the ball. Shame he came off but an encouraging performance.

Rodriguez 7

Was unfortunate to have been marked incredibly well by the WBA defence/midfield, otherwise I think he could have done very well yesterday. Showed some good movement to get himself into space up top and played all 3 roles in attack at some stage without looking uncomfortable. Made a few driving runs with the ball but his opponents were always quick to close him down and get the ball away from his feet. Unlucky to hit the bar with a drilled shot that was called back for a foul by Lallana anyway.

Rickie Lambert, Southampton's Goal Machine 8

What a week for Rickie. Perhaps he didn't get the service yesterday that he would have wanted as WBA were very quick to limit his options. Couldn't get the ball to his feet as Olsson and McAuley were all over him, so had to resort to running in behind the defenders which we didn't seem too keen on trying more than twice! Still dropped deep and showed some good link-up play, and when that penalty was given I was in no doubt as to what the outcome would be. Utter legend for the club, and I might be in love with him a bit.

Subs:

Ramirez 5

I don't want to be overly negative towards Gaston, as he's obviously a good player, but I don't have any idea why Poch put him on yesterday. Obviously not the right kind of game for him as it was a very physical battle all over, and he thrives on having space to play in (which WBA were very good at limiting all game). Didn't quite seem to know what he was doing, and was always near the ball but unreachable with a pass. Chuck in a few woeful passes and it wasn't a good one for him yesterday. Obviously he's tired due to travelling from international duty, so give him a rest and put on Punch or Guly to try and penetrate their defence.

S. Davis 7

Brought on to replace JWP's tired legs and did exactly that. Provided energy and a bit of bite out wide, and was very good at covering the full back. He might feel unlucky to be on the bench, but I think he's a good option to have later on in a game in order to shore up the midfield.

Cork N/A

Wasn't on the pitch long enough to pass comment on, but he's certainly going to have his work cut out in order to get back into the starting line-up!

One of the few negatives about yesterday for me was also the erratic officiating. West Brom fans are moaning about the amount of cards they picked up, but I was more puzzled by the linesmen being very slow to flag for just about anything. Not a confident display from any of the officials, but maybe they'll get better as the season goes on? (Or at least I hope so!)

All in all, 3 points well earned and I hope we mean to carry on the way we've started!

Why was Lallana's goal ruled out

Rickie was at worst level when chambers crossed

Lallana was onside when rickie headed it

Jay rod was offside which is why he didn't touch the ball

Just imagine how good big vic will be after a few weeks in the gym bulking up he was everywhere in the 1st half

Lovrens tackle was pure class

Could rickie have put his pen any more into the corner sure there was another fraction of a millimetre he could have used

It was deemed that Jay was "interfering with play" because he blocked the keeper's path to the ball whilst in an offside position. I think so anyway. That's what I gleamed from watching the highlights.

The WhoScored ratings for this game make for interesting reading (if you're a fan of stats). They back up what many of us feel about the top performers but also highlight what an excellent game Fonte had. I admit to having been a critic last season, but perhaps Poch has improved his game? If you are going to learn from your manager, I guess it helps if the manager is (was) an international class centre-back... Have a look:

on the commentary they said that the offside rule has been tweaked a bit for this season. If a player is moving towards the ball he's likely to be adjuged to be influencing play, unless of course the ball is on the 6 yd line and he's in the centre circle or similar. Don't we have some resident refs to talk us through this new interpretation ?

Am I the only one not that impressed with Wanyama? He did ok but his passing was suspect at times and looked lost for ideas. Most of the time he solved this by just passing the ball to Morgan but quite a few forward passes resulted in WBA having the ball. Now I'm not saying he was bad, just that I hope there's a lot more to come for 12,5 million!

I think he played well but I'm not feeling the gushing praise. Gave away a lot more fouls than Cork would, but he's clearly got heaps of talent and needs a run of games to forge a partnership with Schneiderlin. I was impressed, but not blown away as many seem to have been.

Delighted with yesterday, felt Wanyama was quality and just got MOTM ahead of Lovern and Fonte.

As a game of football it wasn't action packed but it was a good advert for how to drill two teams properly, play their own styles of football and try and stick it out over 90 mins. No one descended aimless hoof or some sort horrible mistake to give the game away (I felt the pen was a pen, despite Shaw's lowly scoring record he was clean through and taken out in the box). Only complaint was the shockingly confusing standard to refereeing, no idea why they needed 4 yellows and we just gave away free kick after free kick for being in the game. It seemed the ref wanted a non contact game but didn't seem capable of applying it.

Either way delighted to start the season how we mean to go on!
