Turks, what did you think of Pochettinos suit today??

Very smart, I like seeing a manger in a well cut suit, shirt and tie. Much better than his horrendous tight jeans and bench coat last season. I hope he has learnt from last seasons mistakes and invested in a smart winter coat. This certainly is a good start and gives me hope of a successful season from a manager.

Wonder if this is an opening day one off or a change in match day wear for Poch? Usually a tracky-b kinda guy. The jacket looks a little ill fitting though, don't think he'll ever be much of a fashionista.

Great day. Fantastic atmos in the ground. Very good football in places. Slightly defensive substitutions from Pottechino but that pen was so sweet. Off day for JRod, Wanyama immense, Chambers not out of place by any means. 3 lovely points. And only a tenner for my nipper. (The ticket, not selling him). Happy days. Farce giving MOM to one of theirs.

Great start not very often we win on the opening day, fantastic feeling.

Clean sheet & a late winner what a week for SRL. I was stuck in a traffic jam most of the match so only had text updates.

Reading the posts on here sounds like Chambers had a good debut along with Lovren & Wanyama.

Also fabulous to see three 18-year olds & four homegrown players starting today.

What about a lucky tie with a bulldog on it!! Or maybe they are not that lucky.

It should be a team one, red and white with a bit of black; but ANYTHING other than blue.... bulldog, Mickey Mouse, ANYTHING, just not blue..... very unprofessional, imo

Just back from the game. Very solid display and deserved the win. Really just missing that extra spark up front, if we solve this and everyone can stay fit we will finish in the top 10. Lovren and Wanyama very good today, lovren made a great tackle when Anelka was bearing down on goal. Shaw looked brilliant, thank god he wasn't seriously injured last week, looks excellent going forward too. Great save from Boruc at the end too just after we scored. And another great penalty from Lambert. Good day

Was sat in the West Brom end and have to say the travelling Saints fans sounded excellent, great atmosphere. I read on here a lot about people commenting on others fans being excellent (i.e Celtic fans) but the fans were amazing today.

Game was not the best but a solid start.

For me Wanyama and Lovren were our best two. Chambers had a good solid start and will be a fine understudy to Clyne this season. Great save by Boruc at the end too.

Went with two baggies fans and they were disappointed but not too surprised, said they need wingers/creative players.

Boruc - 7

Chambers - 7

Lovren -8

Fonte -7

Shaw -8

Morgan -7

Wanyama -9

JWP - 8

Rodriquez - 8

Lallana - 8

SRL - 7

Over all a good team performance and good debuts for the 3 new players.

(Oh yeah, and met Rickie at the end quick, shook his hand and got a photo, made my day!).

Great view in the west stand block C2 right at the back of the stand. Saints away block sounded very good and the pandemonium when Rickie scored looked fab!

Well done Chambers. Wanyama and Loveren are going to be great additions this season.

Congratulations on your victory - thoroughly deserved - we were utterly pathetic, unacceptable even and you more than punished us for our continued lacklustre performances.

Wanyama is an absolute beast in midfield - although should have received a yellow card. He'll do very well for you in this division.

Best of luck for the remainder of the season.

Comment from an WBA fan on one of their forums...

I`ll tell you were your victory stemmed from today , your two Central Midfielders , Morgan Schneiderlin & the Black Lad ( Sorry , don`t know his name )

They controlled the tempo from the first kick untill the last and we never got too grips with them in the centre of the park.

A draw would of been perhaps a better overall refection of the 90 minutes , that said , I felt if any team was going to win it , it was going to be yourselfs.

You learn`t the lessons of two defeats against us last season - you had a better shape than us and showed more enterprise and your closing down , hurrying & harassing was top draw , again from the first whistle untill the last.

Hats Off - Great Start for you.

Back from the game - we looked very compact, esp in CM and at CB though West Brom are a very poor team. They've lost everything that made them such a handful last year -pace and directness. Anelka looked like a pale shadow (saw him play last summer in China and even there he seemed to be running on empty). Long will chase and harry all day but nobody's going to lose any sleep over him.

Lovren and Wanyama were excellent, though Wanyama faded a bit the second half. Shaw was excellent. Lallana also deserves an honourable mention as his play was much more incisive than usual.

Chambers had a steady debut, though JWP did an excellent job of making sure that he was never too isolated (one diagonal punt to Long in the second half apart). Still Clyne offers so much more at the moment. Shaw's driving runs were a reminder of Clyne provides on the other flank -and apart from the odd, bobbly flash from Jrod and a powerful run from Wanyama in the first half, its something we missed.

Hopefully we can sort out a new striker this week - Lambo has many qualities but running the channels as he was doing in the second half as West Brom pushed up isn't one of them.

From the commentary, Mr Friend the ref gave nearly all free kicks to WBA. This did not seem too surprising, as in the analysis on "Untold Arsenal" last season, I think Friend was listed as worse than bad from a Saints point of view! He then awarded the penalty for us.........ah well. Great goal, Ricky.

Well done all the team today.

I didn't think you were that bad, you had more of the game in the 2nd half, but I agree we deserved the win

It seems obvious to say, but you really miss Lukaku. He was the difference against us last season

Great start. We looked experienced out there and with loads of class. Wanyama and Lovren I think are too very wise and good additions to our starting 11. Based on what I saw Fonte and Yoshida can do a good job partnering Lovren.

Thought everyone did well, but I'm still unconvinced about having Lallana as the captain, especially as Rickie's merits make him look like our real leader.

I posted this in the pre-match thread:

More questions than answers for me this pre-season. Not that it is a bad or good thing, but some things just aren't very clear to me. I guess we'll find out a bit more this Saturday. These are the questions:

1. Who will emerge as the preferred option to play behind Lambert? Davis, Lallana, and Ramirez all offer very different options. What will suit the team best? Or will it be a circumstantial pick based on the opposition?

2. Who will partner Lovren? It looks like it may well be Hooiveld, but if the Hooiveld and Fox partnership is reignited on the left side of the defence it is really very very dangerous.

3. Will the style of play in the final third finally be established? Pochettino's style called for quick football in the final third, one or two touch stuff to take advantage of the positions we win the ball back in. But other than glimpses in fits and starts, we've moved the ball too slowly whether building up from the back or winning it high up the pitch. Will we be more incisive or will we continue to slow the game down? Does Pochettino trust his defence enough to be happy to lose the ball up the pitch playing more exciting football? Or are our personnel just not compatible with that part of his game right now?

4. Will we press all game or will it be used in select moments? Can the defence cope with the long diagonals that exposed it badly at times last season?

As long as we give West Brom a decent game I'll be happy, but the defending worries me still (as a team, not individuals).

1. I wasn't surprised to see Lallana start behind Lambert but JWP as the choice on the right ahead of Puncheon and Guly (who Poch confirmed were not injured) was a massive surprise.

2. There were lots of surprised faces in the crowd when Fonte was selected as Lovren's partner. Fonte defended well to be fair to him. He looks good as the 'secondary' centre-half. I still think his distribution going forward is awful but he was neat and tidy otherwise.

3. It still didn't click in the final third for me, and most of our best openings were results of nice build up play rather than came from pressing and quick passes.

4. We definitely only pressed based on circumstance. It wasn't a blind press at all.

My last concern about defending as a team was very wrong. The most impressive part of todays performance was our shape and discipline - a result of the personnel on the field and big confidence from the players in what they were asked to do. We were very very solid. If a team was to break us down it would have to be through some very good play, certainly more than West Brom looked like they would have to offer and if they were still playing now I doubt they would have summoned any more than the single shot on target they managed in 95mins. It was very impressive.

Very proud to see four Academy products on the pitch, even moreso that three of them were 18 years old. Chambers acquitted himself brilliantly - another old head on very young shoulders. He also competed well in the air as well. JWP was dilligent and tidy, whilst Shaw played with a confidence and belief that he could make something happen. It was all very very encouraging.

Wanyama was good, but I don't think he was brilliant. He will turn out to be brilliant though, I am sure of it. Schneiderlin was the best player on the park.

Lovern was great - a few last ditch challenges but his presence drives a great confidence to those around him.

Jay Rod wasn't at the races but sometimes that happens - there was no lack of effort.

Overall I would have been happy to settle for a point and I thought the subs from Pochettino reflected that. However Shaw decided to take matters into his own hands and Lambert made no mistake. It was great to see how much the win meant to the players and how integrated Lovren and Wanyama were.

Our squad is starting to look very strong. Cork, Davis, and Ramirez on the bench today, whilst Guly, Puncheon, and Yoshida didn't even make the 18. Plus from the sounds of it there may even be more to come.

A great start and lets hope we can capitalise on the momentum.

Back from the game - big contrast to last season on Guy Fawkes Day when they outmuscled us particularly in the centre of the park .Can't see anyone outmuscling Wanyama this season. At one point defending a free kick my son said Wanyama is in the wall. I said Wanyama is the wall.... well he's not quite that wide but at times it felt like he was made of brick. Great start from us stroking it around confidently and at half time only one team in it. VW had a great first half and Lovren got better and better as the game wore on. That second half sliding tackle on Anelka was perfectly timed. We couldn't quite keep the intensity going second half and the Baggies came back in to it in terms of possession and urgency but only one team deserved the win. Very composed debut from Chambers who worked well with JWP.Great desire about the side and a real intensity from the players about the celebration after Rickie's penalty. FWIW I thought it was definitely a penalty and Shaw again outstanding . So many reasons for optimism and hats off to the Saints fans for some truly deafening renditions of OWTS. Top day out - looking forward to sticking it to the in no way fascist Di Canio next week.

A red tie wouldn't work with that suit.

The colour/design of the tie depends on the choice of shirt far more than that of the suit.

Further, a tie is more than simply an article of clothing - it tells others about your self; regiment, university, business association, golf/yacht club - that kind of thing.

In this case, a Saints necktie, beit the crest or stripes or whatever, would be essential.
