I thought that when teams are on equal points, that the away win takes precedence. So how are Liverpool above us and Fulham. Fulham are even above them alphabetically. Does historical precedence come into play? :? Or is it just down to the preference of the bloke making the table?

These are the rules for the table

Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. The bottom 3 teams will be automatically relegated to the division below.

If two or more teams finish level on points the team with the better goal difference will finish higher.

If two or more teams have the same points and the same goal difference, the team which has scored the higher number of goals will finish higher.

If two or more teams finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored, and the championship, a relegation place or European qualification is at stake, they will then play off to decide who finishes higher.

Give him credit, he had a good game. He was obviously going to look weaker than Lovren who is a quality player and a level above.

I'm not saying he had a bad game. Far from it, he looked better than he did for long periods last season and we kept a clean sheet so our CBs obviously both did their jobs. I just think that Maya is the better option and should reclaim his place, that's all.

Forgot to mention.......Lovren not only a class dominant player.....

he also made a brilliant tackle in the box..near the end..their player through to shoot and he got his foot across the ball.

Would have been a goal last season.....Like Victor Wanyama....he has that win win attitude..which will spread throughout the team.

Well done Poch and staff.....Great pre season..great squad and great youngsters like Chambers,Shaw, JWP and young Lambert:)

That'll do nicely. No real expectation of the three points, given their double over us last year. Caught the last 20 minutes. Both new signings looked great.

Has anyone mentioned the fact that the winning goal came after Ads left the pitch? :D

Wanyama made Mulumbu look small. What a presence, what a buy. But Luke Shaw - just wow! Great Day to be a Saints Fan.

Good to hear after he bullied our midfield last season up there.

Great win, didnt think we'd get anything up here and by all accounts the new boys sound excellent. An away win, a clean sheet and 3 teenage English lads in our starting line up. Excellent stuff.

Merson said on Sky Sports [i know it was only poor old befuddled Paul Merson but nevertheless] that he looked worth £20 million.

It's very early days but it seems to me that we actually did good business getting him - after some of the debates on here.

'Look at me, look at me.'

He also said before kick off that we had paid way over the odds. His opinions, clearly, are as valid as most on here! :-)

Well that's a surprise. Great result against a very decent team.

Love it when we grind out a game like that one, sounded like we had them under control most of the time, defensively we look good.

Just need Ossie to fill the missing link.

Arsenal losing at home and the fans singing 'spend some money' makes me wonder if they are about to go into panic buy mode. Hope there isn't a last gasp Arse bid for him.

Haven't read any of these yet so probably already been said but Lovren was outstanding! Mopped up on numerous occasions and won plenty of headers. Also extremely confident in possession.

Big round of applause also goes to Chambers. Superb pro debut (?). He'll really push Clyne.

Finally, special mention to Rickie. What a week.

Pochetitino will be our Sir Alex Feguson. Great new additions, the academy will get stronger, the incumbent players have and will improve.

I do fear that by the time we have got into Europe he will be dumped for the next manager who can progress us. ;)

Thank God for reality pointing out that we couldn't have been watching Saints as there were no stripey shirts on our side of the pitch, because at times we looked sensational.

HT Stat of 63% possession gave us twitchy bums because despite some sublime touches we had not really created anything.

What a debut by young Chambers, 18 years old FFS?

Wanyama as someone tweeted did he look like a 12.5 mil player? No he looked like a 25mil player.

Lovren? Quality.

Great to have members of Doha Saints in the bar with us.

One big down side?

Thanks to RIckie we now have to put up with newly found SRL fans trying to sing the SRL song. Today it was a sloshed Geordie - yeah it was funny but after 90 mins...

Oh and randomly we had a new member today. Used to go to school with JWP. Ah bless

Not sure about that. He looked the one most likely to slip up and leave an opening for WBA today I thought. A few hacked clearances put us back under pressure and I reckon Yoshida should be first choice alongside Lovren based on his form towards the end of last season.

agree whole heartedly.

Rickie did - what he does best, even in the 90th minute.

New players /debuts:

I thought Lovren was EXCELLENT - did he miss anything? Wanyama got in and mixed it a bit, looks the part but early to see how he will play - (but it meant Schneiderlin was almost invisible).

was very impressed by Calum Chambers Premier League debut (if he plays like that consistantly then Clyne will be on the bench for a long time).

Very impressive team performance in first half, a tough-fought game (they had four yellows yet we none.)..but overall thought we definitely deserved the three points.

Just got back. Great result and the away end went berserk when the penalty went in. Thought we were dominant for the first hour but that we were preparing to settle for a draw. Great run by Luke but a soft penalty to give away. Fantastic feeling to win on he first day!!

Great start, and looking at the fixtures we have a great chance to really build some momentum. This is the most excited I've felt about saints for many years, and with the age of most of the squad, things really do look good for the future. Very happy.

Shaw for me was just about best player on the pitch today.Very very closely follwed by Lovren ,Wanyama,Chambers & JWP.

I thought we looked rock solid, even Fonte whilst looking the weakest link looked much improved.

Lovren & Wanyama really do look the real deal .Clyne could have trouble getting his place back if today was anything to go by.

JWP looked well lively hope he continues.Gotta feel sorry for Cork but VW is a beast and IMO a big improvement.

I know its only one game but i think we looked alot more mature than last season.Ramirez was a bit disappointing when he came on .All in all a fantastic day.Great all round team performance, quite a few individual stand out performers .Set the bar high gotta maintain in now .

love it

Good solid performance. Would have been happy with a point, but the penalty decision made up for the (IMHO) incorrectly disallowed goal for Lallana. Rickie stuck it away beautifully, legend. What a week for him!

In the first half I thought Wanyama was the pick of our players, but then as the match wore on I got more and more impressed by Lovren. Absolute class, solid as a rock, seems to exude confidence that will spread through the defence and rest of the team. Wanyama was still fantastic, but I thought he ended up giving away a lot of unnecessary free kicks that led to some dangerous moments. Nothing that can't be sorted out though. Great couple of buys.

Fonte was decent, but his distribution (and Fox-like Hollywood passes) was awful at times. I think we'll be even more solid with Yoshida alongside Lovren, although his passing wasn't all that last season either. Would love to see another Lovren quality CB come in, although that could be asking too much. And still really hoping for Osvaldo to join, as at times in the game we looked like we needed something different going forward.

Chambers was impressive, although I'll be happy when Clyne is back as he also gives us more going forward. JWP also great, although he was a bit erratic with set-pieces, sometimes quality, sometimes disappointing. But better than most of our set-piece takers last season.

And Shaw. What a star! So lucky his injury turned out to be nothing.

Not to forget that save from Boruc at the end.

But overall, MOM performance from Lovren in his debut. Roll on next week!

isn't it wonderful to have rickie taking our penalties, no worries at all and as good as a goal already! felt that it was a soft penalty though but made up for our, in my opinion, wrongly disallowed goal in the first half.

good all round performance from the team, we had control of the game throughout and it was only a matter of being able to find that breakthrough to turn a point into 3. still feel we lacked the incisiveness in the final third to turn our possession into goals.

individually, wanyama and lovren both had very good debuts giving us that added defensive steel at the back. chambers at right back looked solid as well, nothing spectacular but definitely able to cut it in the premier league. up front jay rod and lambert did not have the best of games I felt, especially rickie who was very quiet in the second half except for the penalty. shaw looks like he has improved a level and is now adding marauding runs down the left flank to his game (next bale?) similarly jwp adds so much to our set pieces with his accurate deliveries. rest of the team were okay but felt abit sorry for cork though.

anyway one more striker in and we will have such a complete team! bring on Sunderland!
