I felt we dominated the majority of that game in terms of retention, we didn't crate enough ''clear cut'' chances for my liking, but that will come within time.

Defensivley though, we were unplayable. Lovren made that centre half position his own, he looks one hell of a player. Way too god to have cast aside as he was by Lyon.

Wanyama added that steal and strength to the CM area which we lacked last year, all too often teams would break away and run through us - but Wanyama is just impossible to get through, he floors everyone he gets near, it's incredible to watch him.

Real credit to Boruc as well, what a flaming save that was at the end.

Overall, we won.....on the opening bloody day!!!!!! what's going on????

Lots too look forward to based on that.

Good performance, Chambers did very well and looks like he'll be excellent competition for Clyne at RB as was JWP, who could have a far more important role in the squad this season. Wanyama was also very good, but hopefully he can concede fewer fouls in dangerous areas for the rest of the season.

I think, if we can sign another striker we will do very well this season

Lovren was MOtM for me.

Nice to have someone in JWP who can get the ball in at free kicks and corners.

Lovren, Wanyama and the out for weeks Shaw (amazing the difference a week makes) stand out players for me, and don't forget Boruc, as a goalie who had nothing to do all game kept his concentration.

Congrats to Rickie, bet you haven't stopped smiling all wekk?

You beauts! Played really well by the sound of it, youngsters looking really assured, defence solid with a great debut for Lovren, who doesn't take any prisoners. Midfield in command first half with a good showing from Wanyama and Schneiderlin underpinning it. Lallana apparently onside for his goal, but Rodrigues presumably interfering with play.

Not often that we've come away with all three points on the opening day, so already three poionts ahead of last season. We looked value for the win and kept plugging away right to the end. The levels of fitness in the team must have been quite something. Shaw lasted the match thank goodness, bearing in mind that his injury a week ago looked to be more serious and the penalty was down to him and a great run into the box. Debate whether Mulumbu should have been sent off because of one yellow already.

Overall I thought our defence looked a lot more solid than last season but we seemed to sit back and invite a lot of pressure from WBA at times - didn't see much evidence of the high-press today.

Glad to hear we've finally worked out plan b for these sort of teams. Really could've done with that sort of patience to grind out a result against QPR last season.

Looking forward to the season now :-)

my stream froze momentarily just as SRL was stepping up....luckily it came back on immediately after a few rude words!! VW MotM for me....his ball control had been questioned on here before but everytime he had the ball, the WBA players just seemed to bounce off him....I thought the ref was poor though, some ****e decisions....Ramirez didn't do much when he came on but right now I'm high as a kite!!

Early days of course but based on the Solent commentary it sounded like our PL débutantes - Chambers, Lovern and Wanyama had strong games. I'm pleased for all of them of course, especially young Calum Chambers.

If memory serves we got tonked in this fixture last season, so todays (narrow) victory looks to be a good sign for the shape of things to come. If you defend your goal well, as we seem to have today unlike the early games of last season, than almost anything is possible.

Really looking forward to Sunderland next week.

He was a beast, he should be bloody happy. Money well spent.

Merson said on Sky Sports [i know it was only poor old befuddled Paul Merson but nevertheless] that he looked worth £20 million.

It's very early days but it seems to me that we actually did good business getting him - after some of the debates on here.

Arsenal will be kicking themselves, shows what an idiot wenger was. He passed up the opportunity to sign him.

Yeeeeeeeeesssss!!!! Looked a quality solid professional outfit throughout. No real dodgy moments, certainly no period under the cosh and, for once, the last minute goal drama was in our favour. Wanyama and Lovren have raised the bar. When we lost 2 nil in the corresponding fixture last season I recall Mulmbu being called out as the dominant midfield enforcer type we needed. Well now we've got Wanyama and he dominated Mulumbu. We are a top class striker away from being the complete real deal and I'm fecking loving it!!!

I thought that when teams are on equal points, that the away win takes precedence. So how are Liverpool above us and Fulham. Fulham are even above them alphabetically. Does historical precedence come into play? :? Or is it just down to the preference of the bloke making the table?

shout out to Jose who had a solid game next to Lovren (from what i saw on my dodgy stream anyway) no reason for him to lose his place next weekend

Not sure about that. He looked the one most likely to slip up and leave an opening for WBA today I thought. A few hacked clearances put us back under pressure and I reckon Yoshida should be first choice alongside Lovren based on his form towards the end of last season.

Give him credit, he had a good game. He was obviously going to look weaker than Lovren who is a quality player and a level above.
