Working on that reply for three weeks, then? Well done.

That long eh although threads come so thick and fast. Devastated I missed last weeks although there seems to have been no prolonged discussion on his predictions so it could have been worse.

Also my wittiest friend was on holiday so I had to wait for him to return to help me compose a worthy response,

I'm not sure if Lawrenson is just inept or has a ludicrous agenda against us. Hugely unlikely its the latter but I think some people on here should have a look at the amount of times he predicted us to lose on the trot and then judge the people who get irate at the bloke...

Wasn't it something like 17 consecutive predictions of us losing? That'd p1ss me off as well...

It's now got to be a complete joke. I don't think that Lawrensen pays enough attention to any of the teams in the premier league to be able to make sensible predictions. He is not much more than a pub bore who watches MOTD highlights and thinks he knows everything. I don't think that he is inept, I just think that he is lazy.

I quite often have a brief browse of the oppositions forums before we play them to see what they're saying and I'd say almost every single one has a thread the same as ours having a pop at Lawro for "hating" them or calling him a ****.

Does everyone have a CB Fry equivalent telling people it is not significant? He might be able to find some online buddies

Do you think Joe actually knows anything about real football or soccer as he'd call it ?

There are so many "what ifs" about this set of predictions; maybe he didnt even do them himself and they were ghost-written. Maybe he just doesnt like the Jacksonville Jaguars owner. I seem to recall there was a lot of rivallry between Montana and Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins; maybe he just doesnt like Florida and anything connected to it.

But any bloke who calls a Saints 4-1 win in his name is a top fella in my book.

"After the start that the Saints have made, their supporters are probably convinced they are definitely going to finish in the top half of the table. The Premier League is not quite as easy as that, though."

Yes it is: easy, easy!!

He said something lovely on MOTD2 - can't remember exactly what as was too busy being mesmerised by his natty shirt. He must have bought a job lot that shrunk in the wash.

a better format actually talking over the highlights rather than repeating the commentary from Saturdays games.

All this criticism of Lawrenson (I refuse to use the disrespectful and infantile shortened version that his school-friends still apply to him) fails to recognise a published FACT. He is the BBC's FOOTBALL EXPERT. That means he must know more than even the crisps salesman.

Given his expert status, it would be unwise to disregard his prediction prior to the Fulham game, that Saints will not only drop out of the top six but will finish in the bottom half of the table. To underline his confidence in his football knowledge, it would be good to hear that Mr Lawrenson had offered to walk from the BBC HQ (in Salford) to the SMS if Saints do somehow contrive to finish in the top half of the table so that he could apologise for his string of incompetent predictions. Even better if he did that and Southampton FC refused to let him in. But unfortunately, because he is THE BBC's FOOTBALL EXPERT he must be right and Saints' fans must steel themselves for a string of bad results.

Just as an afterthought - in case the BBC send him to St Marys' at some point to sit next to commentator at a Saints' match, could the Song-Writers of the Northam come up with some encouraging words of welcome?

Probably not. Unless there's a Man United song we can make a **** poor version of.

Lawrenson might be one of several of the BBC's football "experts" but during this bit of fun where his "expertise" is pitted against guest celebrity pundits weekly, he only manages to come half way down the league against them.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24604531

On that basis, Nicky Wire of the Manic Street Preachers would be a better choice as an expert. Lawrenson's league table is also miles out and he only manages to correctly predict 3 correct league positions and having Fulham in 7th place demonstrates his lack of knowledge clearly to everybody. Last season he would have us lose every match pretty well and he was therefore wrong more often than not. This year, he could have predicted us winning every match and on balance, been seen as a much better pundit than he really is. The irony is probably lost on him though, as he isn't the sharpest tool in the box.

Susanna Reid would be my choice in place of Lawro - petition NOW!

"they created more chances than Southampton did"....and they also let in 3 times more goals.

BBC´s stats from the game doesn´t even support him.....according to those 10 shots at goal....while we had 18.

He's predictions for us are clearly directed to get annoy us, he's just on a massive wind up. He's battered on twitter by Saints fans. So what better way to get his revenge than wind us up even more...!

I think that Stoke ought to take note of Lawro's sage advice and act on it. He advises them not to pack the midfield and utilise the extra striker up front. That would be fantastic from our point of view, as their strikers would be lucky to touch the ball for most of the match unless they're helping out their defence. He gets the stats wrong about the number of attempts on goal that we had against United compared to Stoke and yet he doesn't realise that Rooney and Van Persie hardly got a sniff of a strike for most of the match, but Crouch and Walters are expected to do better.

He also seems to forget that we were the first team to get a draw against Stoke away last season, putting three past what had been up until then the best home defence in the division. And since then, we've tightened up our defence.

But keep on predicting that we'll lose, Lawro. From time to time you'll get it right. But your record of predictions on Saints puts you firmly in the category of a C list minor celebrity guest rather than a supposed expert pundit.

I reckon Lawro's mum writes the summary and Lawro just does the prediction:

Southampton just need to keep doing what they are doing. Their forward players are creating loads of chances and their defence is incredibly tight. The Saints attack is great to watch, with the players constantly inter-changing positions, and they will cause any team problems.

Stoke, in contrast, have been struggling and are without a league win since the end of August.

Lawro prediction: Stoke 2 -1 Southampton

I guess you could be right, but on the other hand, he's crosses me as not being the type of person to joke about when it comes to his reputation and knowledge of football. If it was someone like Jeff Stelling then I could understand. So I have to err on the side of disagreeing with you that he is a WUM. Anyway, I have no idea why people get so worked up about his thoughts.

He is just a sad old ex-footballer trying desperately to stay involved in the game but slowly but surely he is being pushed out - he's a dinosaur, a has been from a different generation; he hasn't played for 25 years and is stuck in the past. Granted there are others from the same era, but they seem to be somewhat better, although Garth Crooks can also join Lawrenson. Lawrenson is chippy, patronising, unfunny, far too negative and miserable about everything he discusses and to cap it off, is fugly with a dodgy barnet (I can't work out whether he was uglier with or without the 'tache).

Saying we are going to lose week in week out, he is bound to be correct sooner or later.

Lawrenson has always disliked Saints for some reason - must go back many many years to some incident or another.

I always wondered if he had "something personal " against Saints as he has never favoured us. He played 7 seasons for Liverpool (1981-88).

Although our wins there were extremely rare..... we actually won 1-0 in 81/82, and he even scored twice in our 0-5 defeat the following year.

However, visits to The Dell weren't always so happy for Lawro. In that same period, Saints won 3 and drew 2 games against 'pool..

Not sure if he played every time, but he surely doesn't have so many good memories about us.

Whatever the reason, it sounds childish to bear a grudge for so long.......but not to be compared with my total dislike of Spu*s ( but I'll comment on that another time.)
