Have you ever been this excited about a season kick off?

I'm as excited now as am I am before any season. That great point where destiny is ours to take.

Same. Season ticket in my back pocket and first trip to the Hawthorns with my boy who has just passed his A Levels to get into Uni. A brilliant week could be made even better if we get off to a flier!

Not that bothered either. I'm sick of all the stories about Rooney, Suarez and Bale and the stupid amounts of money involved in football at the moment. I'm sure that once I'm in the pub before the first match I'll start getting excited though. Will just have to close my eyes and pretend that we're playing in a different kit during the game!

We have the current England Centre Forward, our neighbours have certainly not kept up with the Joneses? We have one of the youngest teams in the Premiership and West Brom are going to get a Wolves....0-6.

I love you Saints.

I get less excited every year, and the FL having been running for 2 weeks has completely taken the edge off it this year for me. Plus we're not going to win anything, what's to get excited about ?

Not even bothering to go to The Hawthorns, and I went there on a Monday night for a live tv match last season !

I was more excited this time last season, because of the frisson brought by the incredible success of the two preceding seasons and the journey into the unknown, being back in the Premier Division after a 6 year absence.

This is the first time having watched Saints that I am not nervous about relegation.

Are you aware that shaw and clyne are injured... yoshi and ramirez are unlikely to play the whole game (if at all) due the japan vs Uruguay fixture.

Add to that the fact that we hardly ever beat west brom, and that we have NEVER won under this ref.... the last game being the Arsenal 6-1 i believe...

Yup, i am excited.. to watch us fail to win at west brom!

I haven't been less excited by a new season for a while. All we have to look forward to in the league is another season flirting with relegation. I don't think we will get relegated but it's hard to see us improving significantly on last season. Can't really get excited about our new signings either.

This about how I feel, the two new signings are not going to be the difference between our finish last year and a top ten finish. People are confusing us with that other provincial club , Swansea for example who seem to be able to attract decent players than us by waving LESS money .Sorry

I wasn't nervous about relegation at the start of the second Dave Jones season, the Hoddle season, the second Strachan season, and the season after we finished 7th under Nicholl. And again this season. It's a good feeling this year but not unique.

Fascinating that posters older than me are suggesting they went into the season after we finished second in the League worrying about relegation. Bizarre, thought that team was more highly rated than that.

Yes when we signed Keegan

Spot on Mike. It was unbelievable when a pal rang me as I got home from work but there it was - McMenemy producing Keegan at the press conference on the local TV News. The optimism proved to be well-founded because we had a good team with smattering of other internationala, including Mick Channon at his peak and, they were only beaten to the Div 1 championship by a very good Liverpool side.

You're certain the existing squad, let alone with 2 new signings, couldn't make up the 5 point gap to 10th? i find this really odd. Without any signings I'd expect an improve of 5 points with that squad.

To me that suggests you either really really don't rate the new signings, or really don't rate MP, or both?

That's ignoring the fact that a lot of other teams have strengthened too though.

NOt quite to your level, but I am slightly cautious about all this top ten talk, like it'll be an easy ride. I think we'll still have a flirtation with the drop zone at some point.

Excited about the season generally, but apprehensive about West Brom away as the first game, and hoping a heavy defeat on the opening day doesn't affect the team too badly to be honest. As long as we win 1of the first 3 we'll be on track.

Talk of a top 10 finish is just plain naive imo. We'll finish anywhere between 12th and 18th realistically. As long as we stay up I'll be happy, and we're bound to beat a top 4 team along the way at least once. That's what I'm looking forward to most.

Having said that, I've got a gut feeling we'll do well in the cups this year, so I'm excited about the idea of another day out at Wembley too, and possibly even some silverware!

I think I was more excited last season, back in the Premier League and going away to the champions in the first game. But this is up there with all the others, including 03/04 after the FA cup final when it seemed Strachan might have been able to make a real team out of us.

I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve, but know that whatever highs and lows the season produces, I will ultimately end up disappointed - We are Saints - It's what we do.

The public ambition and expectation that the club have shown, is in my opinion at odds with the squad and the strategy......... But I will for the time being indulge myself in thoughts of glory and a top ten finish, simply because I have done the same at the start of every season for the last 36 years :) :) :) :)

In a more sober moment, survival remains our key goal.

There is patently (IMHO) something happening on the ownership side of things, that I hope doesn't impact us on the pitch later on in the season. We need a fast start and will be heading off tomorrow morning to help that happen.

Yes when we signed Keegan

Now that was excitement, and expectation.

And realisation that Lawrie had pulled off a masterstroke, the kind of which Cortese with all the millions he can muster from the Trust will never come close to.

I remember a sun drenched day v Man City , and above all Saints looked the business in the kit at the start of that season to herald in a new era.

The £20m plus we've shelled out this summer is a complete yawn by comparison.

!966-7 when Saints made Div One was far more exciting-at last we would be seeing The Arsenals, Man U, Liverpool, Spurs and Leeds at the Dell and we could go away and experience 60K standing crowds. Let down by the fact that with 30K in the Dell standing in The Milton Rd end was very uncomfortable and with unsegregated grounds sometimes very hazardous.

But it was still very exciting to actually see something that we doubted would happen, and with local players and nearly the same team as promoted even better.

Of course I was young and not so cynical at the time, England had just won the World Cup and I was off to Uni that year so 1966/7 is covered in a rose-coloured haze!

Just another season, hopefully we won't get anywhere near the relegation spots, and would love to see a cup run but the 'modern' game tends to mitigate against this, Prem position is everything as the poster above, creaming at a top 10 finish indicates only too well.

Squad still looks skinny and we have to hope injuries and suspensions were as kind as they were last year, our A team on their day will give anybody a game but how many performances can MP conjure from the same limited hand? Our second string will struggle so hopefully we won't need them too much.

One more good signing would make a massive difference, I think we'll get one (a left-field panic buy, right at the death).

A solid second season finishing 10-11-12, and a major upgrade needed to take us any higher.

perhaps I misunderstood it, but I thought the managerial change in January 2013 was the 'upgrade' to take us to the "next level".

Well don't get me wrong, i think we hae a good team, and should aim to finish between 10th and 7th.... I am also aware that the defence looks horrendous without shaw and clyne... with yoshi also a doubt.

If lambert gets injured i'll be placing a staggering bet on us getting relegated i suspect. We have a small squad in terms of quality depth. A good first 11 is no good if 2 or 3 key players are out with injuries.

Excited to be going back to football but not particularly excited for the season. Realistically what can happen? We'll finish somewhere in the bottom half and maybe have a bit of a cup run. Premier League is sh*te.

If all you care about is the table you might be quite disappointed but I enjoyed beating the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea last year. I'm not sure what else you really want from football. We had a chance of winning the lower leagues but losing at places like Tranmere, Walsall and Rochdale was pretty crap IMO.

The same as the last and the one before, our signings so far have been quite good but still not enough for us to propel up the League hugely, clappers please sticky this post so you can read this throughout the season before attacking the realists with zeal, anger and resentment.

I think it's fair to say we were propelled pretty far up the league in the Championship season.

well.....tbh....sort of ....like August 16th 1980......? which was the first game for new signing England captain Kevin Keegan, ¨

However, it was that long ago that I've forgotten the excitement from that day, but I also feel good about today, too.

Aug 16th. 1980....Saints 2 Man.City 0 . That season we finished 6th and the Man.City of that generation ended up as a mediocre mid-table side (12th).

I can't wait for this season to start. I reckon we can get 3 points at West Brom next week - I hope so because I've just managed to buy two tickets for the game off of someone on Twitter!

Would you be interested in a cheap upgrade to hospitality?
