Olallana Posted 15 August, 2013 Share Posted 15 August, 2013 Well as we didn´t already know.... http://blog.emiratesstadium.info/archives/30374? Dont really know how they do work this out, but there is an explenation in the blog.... What caught my eyes were the last paragraph.. Looking at those numbers I think it is more or less a miracle that they managed to keep themselves in the PL. They sure didn’t get much from the refs to stay in the PL. gr00031 Posted 15 August, 2013 Share Posted 15 August, 2013 It's a hard job, especially at Premier League level. You never know we might get every decision possible in our favour next year!
brmbrm Posted 15 August, 2013 Share Posted 15 August, 2013 The mantra "it all evens out in the end" is nonsense, as any statistician would tell you. (Suppose there are N random 50-50 decisions, either of which might be in your favour or out of your favour. The standard deviation after these decisions is the square root of N. So for each team there is no averaging out. There is of course averging out in that what is good for one team is bad for another, so the sum of all favourable and unfavourable events is zero, but that isnt true for each and every team. Another way of thinking about it is tossing a coin: you toss it 5 times and get 5 heads. Does that mean it is more likely the next toss will be a tail? Nope.) timayes Posted 15 August, 2013 Share Posted 15 August, 2013 That is interesting, and worrying - although the 'ahem' trip on Jay stands out like a sore thumb!!!
